The recent attention given to actress/comedienne Monique’s viral comments regarding Black Women and their public presentation, brought to remembrance a very special opportunity SuperNatural Hair Solutions participated in this year.

I had the distinct honor and privilege of being invited to the University of Alabama as guest speaker in a PHENOMENAL course titled, “Deeply Rooted: Detangling the Racial Politics of Black Hair in America”. It was nothing short of LIFE CHANGING! We need to know our history.

It got me to thinking....
“Bonnets, bandannas, and Black women, Oh My!”

What are your thoughts?

How do you feel about Black women wearing bonnets in public?

Do you view it as ‘a rebellion against western beauty ideals’ or do you see it as ‘trauma’, that can be traced back to slavery?

Do you have the same views about the “non-conformists” whose public presentation challenges gender norms?

Is it more acceptable to “call out” a Black women in a bonnet, than it is- a man in a dress? Why or why not?

Do Black women have the same “freedom of individual self expression”, that other protected religious groups, ethnic groups, etc share?

Do you ever think “IN GENERAL, there is too much public attention being given to Black women and what they do with their hair?!!!”

Have you ever heard of the “Tignon law?”...🤔

The June 2, 1786, decree, formally titled the bando de buen gobierno or "proclamation of good government", stated that women of color had to wear a scarf or handkerchief over their hair as a visible sign of belonging to the slave class, whether they were enslaved or not; specifying that "the Negras Mulatas, y quarteronas can no longer have feathers nor jewelry in their hair. [... instead, they] must wear [their hair] plain (Ilanos) or wear panuelos, if they are of higher status, as they have been accustomed to."
