Interventional pain management is an effective treatment approach for patients suffering from chronic migraines. Migraines are a type of headache that can be severely debilitating, often causing significant pain and disruption to daily life.

Interventional pain management approaches seek to target the root cause of migraines and alleviate the pain and symptoms associated with them. For example, nerve blocks may be used to reduce inflammation and ease the pain caused by irritated nerves. Trigger point injections are another type of interventional pain management technique that can be used to ease muscle tension in the neck and head, which is a common trigger for migraines.

In addition to these procedures, other interventional pain management approaches may be used to address the underlying causes of migraines, such as lifestyle changes, medication adjustments, and stress-reduction techniques. Overall, interventional pain management offers an effective way to manage chronic migraines, allowing patients to experience less pain and improved quality of life. Let's talk today!!

Broken bones happen when one of your bones becomes cracked or broken into multiple pieces. It’s also known as a fracture. It can result from a sports injury, accident, or violent traumatic event. Broken bones usually aren’t life threatening, but they do require immediate medical care.
If you suspect that someone has a broken bone, provide first-aid treatment and help them get professional care:
Stop any bleeding - If they’re bleeding, elevate and apply pressure to the wound using a sterile bandage, a clean cloth, or a clean piece of clothing.
Immobilize the injured area - If you suspect they’ve broken a bone in their neck or back, help them stay as still as possible. If you suspect they’ve broken a bone in one of their limbs, immobilize the area using a splint or sling.
Apply cold to the area - Wrap an ice pack or bag of ice cubes in a piece of cloth and apply it to the injured area for up to 10 minutes at a time.
Treat them for shock - Help them get into a comfortable position, encourage them to rest, and reassure them. Cover them with a blanket or clothing to keep them warm.
Get professional help - Call 911 or help them get to the emergency department for professional care.

Whether surgery is needed or not, every fracture heals by immobilizing the bone and giving it time to reconnect and strengthen.
Depending on where the fracture is and how severe, treatment may include:
splints – to stop movement of the broken limb.
braces – to support the bone.
fiberglass cast – to provide support and immobilize the bone
surgically inserted metal rods or plates – to hold the bone pieces together.
pain relief – to reduce pain

Although bones are rigid, they do bend, or give, somewhat when an outside force is applied. If the force is too great, bones will break, just as a plastic ruler breaks when it is bent too far. A fracture is a broken bone, the same as a crack or a break.
The severity of a fracture usually depends on the force that caused the break. If the bone's breaking point has been exceeded only slightly, the bone may crack rather than break all the way through. If the force is extreme, such as that caused by an automobile crash or gunshot, the bone may shatter. The most common causes of fractures are:
Trauma - A fall, motor vehicle accident, or tackle during a football game can all result in fractures.
Osteoporosis - This disorder weakens bones and makes them more likely to break.
Overuse - Repetitive motion can tire muscles and place more force on bone. This can result in stress fractures. Stress fractures are more common in athletes.
Dr. Sands will do a careful examination to assess your overall condition, as well as the extent of the injury. He will talk with you about how the injury occurred, your symptoms, and your medical history.

Each foot is made up of 26 bones that work together to support the body’s weight and perform many everyday movements. When you fall or experience any traumatic injury involving the foot, you are susceptible to fracturing, or breaking, one or more of the bones in the foot. Foot fractures can vary in severity, ranging from tiny cracks, or stress fractures, to complete breaks.
A foot fracture occurs when one or more of the bones that make up the foot are broken. A fracture can result from many types of accidents or injuries, but the most common causes include falls, car accidents, sports injuries and missteps. In addition, impact from a heavy object falling on the foot as well as overuse can also lead to fractures.
If you are experiencing pain, swelling or tenderness in the foot, call Dr. Sands office 405-635-3511 for an evaluation.

A hip fracture, also called a broken hip, is a common injury. In the United States, hip fractures are the most common broken bone that requires hospitalization.
Older adults who have osteoporosis are at an especially high risk of hip fractures. Hip fractures cause pain and decreased mobility, and they can also lead to complications, including infections and blood clots. Prompt treatment can minimize these issues.
While a fall can cause a hip fracture, most hip fractures are actually due to fragile bone that breaks, which then causes the person to fall.
You can recover after a hip fracture and regain some or all of your mobility. It is not uncommon for people to break their other hip or sustain other serious injuries resulting from a weakened bone after an initial hip fracture.
If you or a loved one has already sustained a broken hip, preventing future fractures is especially important. Getting treatment for your osteoporosis and participating in physical therapy to improve your strength and balance can help prevent future fractures.

Happy Holidays!

Dr Sands, are you ready for dessert?

It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas at Dr Sands office!

28/11/2022

Steven Sands, D.O. Says that “decorating-related injuries happening on a daily basis during the holiday season, and a hefty 50 percent of those incidents involve falls from ladders, rooftops, and other precarious locations. It’s not surprising to see an uptick in broken bones during the holidays.”

Over the average holiday season about 15,000 people are treated in emergency rooms due to seasonal decorating-related injuries. Each year holiday decorations, ornaments and other trinkets are directly responsible for more than 12,000 emergency room visits due to cuts, and shocks. A significant number of these injuries also include bone fractures, breaks and sprains. An additional 2,000 people are treated for lacerations, sprains, and other injuries due to yet another holiday inspired hazard; tripping over extension cords – connected to Christmas trees, and other festive electrical devices.

Whether from lifting a present that’s too heavy, hauling overstuffed baggage from one location to another, or trying to plow too much snow, millions of American’s also experience back injuries because of the holidays, every year. A 2019 report counted 72,000 emergency room, clinic or doctor visits resulting just from carrying luggage that caused back, neck and shoulder issues.

And then there are winter sports. Accidents involving snowboarding, skiing, snowmobiling, and sledding accounted for more than 186,000 injuries reported by doctor offices, clinics and emergency rooms involving injuries including bone, joint, and muscle-related complaints.

The most important thing is- don’t hesitate to seek treatment. Early intervention can make your holiday season more enjoyable! Dr. Sands specializes in bone trauma. Call us at 404/632-4468!
