Meet our Doctors

Dr. Caroline Jones grew up in Iowa and she completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Montana. She received a Bachelor of Science in Biology and then she graduated from Roseman University of Health Sciences as a Doctor of Dental Medicine. Dr. Jones’ mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of her patients. She aims to improve her patients’ oral health, self-confidence and quality of life. Dr. Jones enjoys gardening, reading, sewing, trying new recipes and absolutely anything that has to do with the State Fair.

"I can't get gum disease if I brush my teeth, right?"

Brushing your teeth twice a day is one of the most important ways to prevent periodontal disease, or gum disease. However, it's not enough on its own. In fact, a toothbrush can only reach about 60% of tooth surfaces! That's why it's so important to floss and make sure plaque isn't building up in these hard-to-reach areas and causing disease.

Even if you brush and floss regularly, though, you're probably still not reaching every surface of your teeth. That's why it's important to visit your local dentist's office at least twice a year for a professional cleaning. Your dentist can also tell you if you're showing signs of periodontal disease and recommend treatment.

"Periodontal disease? What's that?"

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an extremely common condition that affects millions of people. Left untreated, it can lead to pain, tooth loss, and bone loss in the jaw.

Since September is all about gum health, we want to make sure you know what you can do to prevent periodontal disease!

1: Practice good oral hygiene. Poor oral hygiene is the most common cause of gum disease, so the number one thing you can do to protect your gums is brushing and flossing every day!

2: Visit your dentist regularly. Despite the many problems periodontal disease can cause, patients often don't know they have it until it's already caused significant damage. By going to the dentist every 6 months, you will limit how far the disease can progress before it's diagnosed.

If you already have periodontal disease, don't panic. While it can't be cured, your dentist can help you slow or even stop it from worsening! Your dentist will probably recommend extra appointments for deep cleaning that will help you get your gum health back on track.

Keep your gums healthy this Labor Day Weekend!

Labor Day weekend is a great opportunity to dig into some awesome food! But, plenty of traditional Labor Day foods aren't the best for your gums. So here are some tips on how to navigate the weekend with your gum health in mind!

Tip 1: Opt for foods that are high in fiber

Fiber is like nature's toothbrush, scrubbing your teeth and gums to keep them healthy. Some great high-fiber foods include:

>Fruits
>Vegetables
>Beans
>Whole grains

Tip 2: Avoid sugar as much as possible

Sugar fuels decay and bacterial growth in gums and teeth. And it's not just in deserts - most foods have more sugar than people realize. Some foods that sneak in loads of sugar include:

>Barbecue sauce (and foods cooked in it like baked beans and little smokies)
>Ketchup
>Fruit juice (it contains all the sugar of fruit without any of the healthy fiber)
>Lowfat yogurt (usually adds extra sugar to make it taste better)

Tip 3: Make some swaps!

Fortunately, there are plenty of easy ways to swap out sugary foods with healthier alternatives that still taste great! Here are some easy swaps you can try this weekend:

>Use black beans instead of baked beans (loads of fiber with no sugary sauce!)
>Use whole wheat pasta instead of regular (it has way more fiber and honestly doesn't taste very different)
>Drink water instead of fruit juice and eat whole fruit instead

Tip 4: Brush and floss!

Most importantly, no matter what you eat this weekend, regular brushing and flossing is the best thing you can do for your gum health. And with a weekend full of delicious snacks, some extra attention to brushing and flossing can't hurt!
