The Julep can be traced back as far as the early 18th century. It’s believed to come from the Persian word “gulab” which translates to “rose water”. Early versions of the cocktail used Rye or Rum - which were more commonly available - and roses or other flowers. It later evolved to use Bourbon as the spirit became more popular. The flowers were then replaced with mint. Today, the Mint Julep is the official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby and nearly 120,000 Juleps are sold at Churchill Downs over two days! Happy Derby Day!
