🚨🚨🚨 We have learned there may be an attempt to override Governor Stitt’s veto of SB 458, which would expand Oklahoma's independent practice law to allow APRNs to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients without having the proper medical training to do so.
We are asking all members to call and/or email your Senator to ask them to VOTE NO on any veto override attempt of SB 458.
You can find your Senator by clicking the link at the bottom of this post.
The talking points below can be used in your conversations with legislators, or you may choose to incorporate them into an email.
The important thing is that you contact your Senator today and ask them to vote no.
Please forward this email to others in your practice or in your community, and ask them to participate in this effort by sending emails and making calls too.
This is a critical juncture for medicine in Oklahoma. Thank you for helping us advocate for physicians and patients by asking your Senator to VOTE NO on SB 458.
Talking Points:
☑️ Please Vote No on the veto override attempt for SB 458, a bill that would allow some nurses (APRNs) to practice medicine without physician oversight or the necessary training and experience to provide the best care for Oklahoma patients.
☑️ While APRNs are a valuable part of the healthcare team, APRNs and other mid-level providers chose their training to be physician support staff.
☑️ MDs and DOs receive 4 years of graduate-level education, 3-7 years of residency or fellowship training and conduct 12,000–16,000 hours of patient care training before receiving a license to independently practice medicine.
☑️ Nurse practitioners receive as little as 2 years of graduate-level education and approximately 800 total patient care training hours, with much of their education conducted online.
☑️ Nurse independent practice will not significantly improve rural health access. Other states that have implemented independent practice of nurse practitioners have not seen the anticipated increase in access to primary care in rural areas. Rural patients deserve the same high-quality care they expect in urban parts of our state. We should not sell out rural Oklahomans by promising them a secondary level of care that may not even come after the passage of this bill.
☑️ Supporters of the bill mention that 26 states offer independent practice; however, this is not an equal comparison. Many of these states still place additional restrictions over and above what SB458 would require.
