Stress Free Dental Appointments

Probably about 15 years ago, I was getting burned out on practicing Dentistry. The stress of working on overly nervous patients was getting to me. I know Dentistry is not everyone’s favorite activity but when the patient in the chair is wound up then both my lovely assistant Hayley and myself are on edge throughout the appointment.
I remembered taking an anti-anxiety medication during the last months of my Dad’s cancer. Why not use the same medication on people who have had traumatic Dental appointments in the past? I started to prescribe the medication for my patients who were phobic about having Dental work done. That helped a tremendous number of patients but there was still a group who continued to struggle. I have nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) available all of my treatment rooms including hygiene for teeth cleaning. When the anti-anxiety medication and the laughing gas were combined together, the most stressed and phobic patients were enveloped in a soothing cocoon. The patient is still awake but floating in a beautiful cloud.
I would say at this point probably ½ of the patients in my practice used to be phobic but can now ignore their Dental treatments. It is my absolute goal to have all of my patients fully numb and relaxed while I work on them. The flip side of having all the white-knuckle patients comfortable is that Hayley and I in return find our days are relaxed and actually fun.
At this point in my career (30 years ouch!), I think the most elegant way to practice Dentistry is to finesse the treatments and not beat the patients up. Period.
