Say what?!? Ha ha. 🤣

Thumb sucking, especially if prolonged, can negatively affect dental development and overall oral health. Here’s why it can be harmful to teeth:

1. Misalignment of Teeth: Prolonged thumb sucking can push the upper front teeth forward and lower teeth backward, leading to an open bite or overbite, where the teeth don’t align properly.
2. Jaw and Palate Shape: Continuous pressure from thumb sucking can alter the shape of the roof of the mouth (palate) and affect the development of the jaw, potentially requiring orthodontic treatment later on.
3. Speech Problems: Changes in the mouth and teeth alignment can affect speech development, leading to issues such as a lisp or difficulty pronouncing certain sounds.
4. Increased Risk of Infection: Frequent thumb sucking introduces more germs into the mouth, which can increase the likelihood of infections, both oral and elsewhere.
5. Difficulty in Breaking the Habit: The longer a child sucks their thumb, the harder it can be to stop, and the more severe the dental issues may become.

Most children stop thumb sucking on their own by age 4. However, if the habit persists as their permanent teeth start to come in, it may lead to long-term dental problems.
