Congratulations to Jeanie Tryggestad, M.D., on receiving the 2024 Provost Research Award for Senior Faculty in Clinical Science & Translational Research. As an OU Health pediatric endocrinologist and associate professor in the Section of Diabetes and Endocrinology at the OU College of Medicine, Dr. Tryggestad has developed a significant research program on Type 2 diabetes in youth, contributing to key advances in the field.
She has played an integral role in the NIH-funded TODAY study and has worked extensively with the Native American community in Oklahoma. Dr. Tryggestad has authored 51 peer-reviewed publications, many in top-tier journals, and is a respected mentor across all educational levels. Her research, supported by grants including an NIH U01, an R03, and a Team Science Grant from the Harold Hamm Diabetes Center, focuses on the rapid progression of pancreatic beta-cell decline and microvascular damage in diabetic youth. Her work aims to develop new treatments to mitigate the severe long-term effects of this disease, potentially improving the health outcomes of young people with Type 2 diabetes globally.

Will was losing weight, was constantly thirsty and needed to use the restroom more. His mother, Rhesa Brewster, recognized those symptoms. She recalls, “When I was in elementary school, my best friend was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. As a pre-teen, I was with her every step of the way. Because of the close journey with her, both before and during her diagnosis, I remember, distinctly, the symptoms that were clues leading to her diagnosis. Fast forward to 2004, when it became apparent that Will had developed those exact symptoms, I knew.”
