The advantage of having post-Mohs wound reconstruction performed by an experienced plastic surgeon is the ability to restore proper form and function after skin cancer removal. Left untreated, or if closed with excessive tension, wounds can lead to poor healing and scarring, which may become disfiguring over time. Special plastic surgical techniques can enhance healing and reduce the risk of complications.

Patients with wounds from skin cancer removal, especially on the face, can greatly benefit from reconstruction. Dr. Mehdi Adham is an expert in skin repair and can work closely with your cancer surgeon to plan the best approach for your recovery. Contact us today to schedule a consultation at 405-632-4468.

Neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, is a procedure to improve the neck (with or without the jawline) to address the signs of aging. Each procedure is matched to the individual needs of the patient. Generally, this procedure involves tightening the skin, but it may also include liposuction of the fat contours in the neck and jawline. Some patients may request tightening of the platysma muscle that runs in the front neck to provide additional smoothing. Incisions are place in inconspicuous areas to minimize unsightly scars. Many people feel like the neck area is the most visible sign of aging.

Meniscus tears are among the most common knee injuries.

You might feel a pop when you tear the meniscus. Most people can still walk on their injured knee, and many athletes are able to keep playing with a tear. Over 2 to 3 days, however, the knee will gradually become more stiff and swollen.

The most common symptoms of a meniscus tear are:
- Pain
- Stiffness and swelling
- Catching or locking of your knee
- The sensation of your knee giving way
- Inability to move your knee through its full range of motion

This bursa acts as a cushion between bones and soft tissues, allowing smooth movement. When inflamed, the bursa fills with extra fluid, leading to bursitis.

Common symptoms include swelling, pain, and tenderness at the back of the elbow. Causes can range from repetitive motion and prolonged pressure to trauma or infection.

At Southwest Orthopaedics, we offer comprehensive care for elbow bursitis, from diagnosis to treatment. Whether through rest, medication, or physical therapy, our team is here to help you find relief and regain full use of your elbow. Mehdi Adham, MD says a hip-to-hip incision is not for the faint of heart, and when it comes to managing the scar post-op, choosing the right specialist can make all the difference.

"Scarring will differ from patient to patient based on factors, such as surgical technique, genetics, skin type and sun exposure.”

But it's not all gloomy: thanks to leaps in technology and research, there are plenty of scar reduction therapies for patients, including microneedling, injectable treatments, scar gels and creams, laser therapy and re-excision and closure.

"Everyone scars differently," says Dr. Adham, who adds that scars take a full year to mature. "It will look lumpy and puckered from sutures initially."

Just like any surgery, post-op care and recovery isn't a two-month ordeal; you'll be recovering from the procedure for awhile. This procedure is life changing, and expectations are key. We’ll help you get there! Call us today to set a consultation at 405-632-4468

Shin splints, or medial tibial stress syndrome, are a common exercise-related problem that causes pain along the inner edge of the shinbone (tibia). This condition often develops after physical activity, especially running or any vigorous sport, and can affect those just starting a fitness program.

Shin splints occur when the muscles, tendons, and bone tissue around the tibia become overworked by repetitive activity. Sudden changes in physical activity, such as increased frequency, duration, or intensity, can trigger shin splints. Factors like flat feet or improper footwear also contribute to the risk.

Symptoms include pain along the tibia's border, which can be sharp or dull, and may occur during or after exercise. Mild swelling and tenderness are common. While runners are most at risk, dancers and military recruits often experience shin splints too.

At Southwest Orthopaedic, we offer solutions to relieve shin splint pain through rest, ice, and stretching. Our specialists can help prevent reoccurrence and ensure a safe return to activity. Contact us for personalized care and guidance.

Bunions are painful bony bumps that develop on the inside of the foot at the big toe joint, often caused by hallux valgus—a condition where the big toe drifts toward the smaller toes. This misalignment can lead to pain from shoe irritation and crowding of the other toes due to altered mechanical forces in the ball of the foot.

Bunions usually develop slowly, as pressure on the big toe joint causes the toe to lean toward the second toe, altering the position of the bone, tendons, and ligaments. This deformity can worsen over time, making it painful to wear shoes or walk.

Bunions are more common in women than men, with 70% of cases having a family history, indicating a strong genetic component, especially in adolescent bunions. Most bunions develop in adulthood and can result from repetitive micro-trauma.

If you're experiencing pain from bunions, Southwest Orthopaedic can help. Our team specializes in treating foot conditions to alleviate discomfort and improve mobility. Contact us today to learn about your treatment options.

💪 Considering an arm lift? Dr. Adham offers brachioplasty to remove excess skin on the upper arms, often referred to as "bat wings," which can be tough to tone through diet and exercise. This procedure, suitable for both men and women, reduces fat pockets and loose skin, often combining liposuction with surgical removal. Scars are discreetly placed on the underside of the arm and generally heal to a barely noticeable thin line. Enjoy slimmer, fitter-looking arms that look great in any outfit. If you're self-conscious about waving, an arm lift might be perfect for you!

The tendons of the thumb and each of the fingers pass through a sheath on the palm side of the hand. Certain diseases and overuse activities can cause a thickening of this sheath. As the tendon passes through a thickened sheath, the tendon eventually becomes irritated and swells. Pain, catching and eventually locking of the finger will occur. Early treatment consists of anti-inflammatory medication or Cortisone injection. If these fail to provide relief, the sheath is opened surgically through a small incision at the base of the finger.

Derek West, D.O. explains why sleeping on your side may be causing shoulder pain!

Sleeping on your side can lead to shoulder pain due to:

Impingement: Rotator cuff tendons can get compressed between shoulder bones, leading to pain and conditions like bursitis, tendonitis, and tears.

Bursitis: Inflammation of fluid-filled sacs in the shoulder from prolonged impingement, causing pain and stiffness.

Rotator Cuff Tears: Repeated impingement can cause small tears in the tendons, leading to full tears with symptoms of pain and weakness.

Osteoarthritis: Side sleeping can cause cartilage breakdown, leading to osteoarthritis, characterized by stiffness, painful clicking, and worsening pain with movement.

If you’ve been thinking about treating yourself to a makeover for a while now—maybe you’ve even undergone non-surgical treatments like Botox—you may want to consider the benefits of facelift surgery. Mehdi Adham, MD says now is a great time to book a cosmetic procedure that might require you to take some time off work. If you have special vacation planned later in the summer, plan now for facial plastic surgery procedures like the facelift. Facelift surgery can take up to a decade off your appearance and erase some of those lines and wrinkles permanently.

Derek West, D.O. says “you should always pay attention to wrist pain. Every day, we rely on our hands to function, and if you feel pain in the wrist, then it might impede your ability to perform daily activities. Wrist pain can happen for many reasons, from accidents to sudden injuries. It can also be because of a chronic condition.”

Here are six causes of wrist pain that you should never ignore.

1. Repetitive Stress
When you perform an activity for long periods, it can cause inflammation around the tissues of the joints and can cause stress fractures. Sports such as tennis or golf, where you have to use your wrist extensively, can cause wrist pain. To protect your wrist, you can wear wrist splints. As much as possible, you should perform wrist exercises to loosen up your joints in the wrists before you use them. Furthermore, take a break often when performing any activity that causes you to use your wrist too much.

2. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) occurs when the median nerve runs from the forearm into the palm and becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. This is common for people who do much typing in their computers or laptops because they have their wrists in awkward positions. If you do a lot of computer-focused tasks that involve typing, position your hands properly on the keyboard. By doing this, you’re lessening the pressure on the nerves in your wrist, and thus preventing carpal tunnel syndrome.

3. Rheumatoid Arthritis
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease, which means that your immune system attacks healthy cells in your body by mistake, causing inflammation (painful swelling) in the affected parts of the body. It mainly affects the joints in the hands, wrists, and knees. This condition may cause you to limit your activities.

4. Accident
Sudden accidents such as falling on your hand while it is stretched can cause fractures, strains, and sprains. A fall can cause much pain, and you might not be able to enjoy things for some time.

5. Ganglion Cysts
The American Society for Surgery of the Hand defined ganglion cyst as a lump around the hand and wrist that occurs adjacent to joints or tendons. Most of the time, it doesn’t need treatment. However, there can be instances where having ganglion cysts can be painful. During these times, the pain that you are experiencing can restrict your ability to move your wrists. If you feel severe pain, then you should immediately seek medical attention so that the doctor can determine the course of treatment that is needed.

6. Osteoarthritis
According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (ASSH), osteoarthritis is a joint disease in which the tissues in the joint break down over time. Osteoarthritis in the wrist occurs when there has been an injury to the wrist in the past. A person suffering from this condition may experience a flare-up and may be unable to complete a task. If you’re experiencing osteoarthritis, it is best to consult your physician to prescribe a medication that can help relieve the pain.

7. Kienbock’s Disease
The ASSH defined Kienbock’s disease as a condition in which the lunate bone, one of eight small bones in the wrist, loses its blood supply, leading to the bone’s death. This condition mostly affects the young adult population. The diagnosis of Kienbock’s disease can often be made by reviewing your history, performing a physical examination, and taking x-rays. To prevent this disorder, you need to have your wrist in the proper position when performing tasks.

Wrist pain needs a diagnosis so you know how to deal with it. Call us today for a consultation. 405-632-4468
