Senator Lonnie Paxton Elected 2025 Pro Tem Designee
The Oklahoma Senate Republican Caucus has selected Senator Lonnie Paxton (R-Tuttle) as the next President Pro Tempore-designee. Paxton will replace previous Pro Tem-designee Greg McCortney (R-Ada), who the caucus chose in February. McCortney lost his Senate seat during the June primary election.
Paxton currently serves as the Assistant Floor Leader in the Senate and the chair of the Senate Committee on Energy and Telecommunications. He was elected to the Senate in 2016 and previously served as the Mayor of Tuttle. Today's election came after Paxton's opponent, Senator David Bullard (R-Durant), criticized the decision to hold the vote during the Republican National Convention, where some members of the Senate Republican Caucus currently are, including Senator George Burns (R-Pollard). Paxton will be formally nominated (with another vote) during the Senate Republican Caucus Retreat following the seating of members elected following the November general election.
Paxton was born in Chickasha and raised on his family’s farm in Tuttle, his roots in the district run deep. He is a fifth generation Oklahoman and is a businessman, entrepreneur, volunteer firefighter, farmer and rancher. He is a graduate of Tuttle High School and the University of Oklahoma. Senator Paxton has operated an insurance agency in downtown Tuttle for the last 24 years and owns and operates a property company, which has renovated several historically significant buildings. He also farms and raises cattle on land that has been in his family since before statehood. He has served the community as a volunteer firefighter, mayor and city councilman. Paxton served on the Grady County Memorial Hospital board of directors and is a former president of the Tuttle Chamber of Commerce. Senator Paxton and his wife, Misti, have been married almost 30 years. They have four children: Seth is an attorney; Addison is in graduate school at OU; Ethan just completed his first year at OU; and Lillie-Beth will be a junior at Tuttle High School. Mrs. Paxton is a second grade teacher at Tuttle Public Schools. Senator Paxton is a member of Tuttle United Methodist Church.
