The number of young children unwittingly eating cannabis edibles jumped 14-fold in five years, according to a new study published Tuesday in the journal Pediatrics, a growing concern as more states legalize recreational ma*****na and as edible, pot-laced products resembling child-friendly treats grow in popularity

There were more than 3,054 calls to poison control centers about cannabis exposure in kids under the age of 6 after inadvertently consuming an edible in 2021, according to an analysis of data from the National Poison Data System

That’s up from just 207 reports in 2017, an increase of 1,375%

There were more than 7k confirmed exposures in young kids between 17 and 21 - there were no deaths but nearly a quarter of the children were hospitalized - and more than half of cases were among two and three year olds

Cases climbed consistently throughout the five year period, researchers said, through both reports of exposure and hospitalizations spiked during the Covid-19 pandemic compared to pre-pandemic years

The researchers said the precise reasons for this increase are not known, but pointed to increasing legalization of ma*****na, children spending more time at home and having more opportunities to find cannabis-infused treats and clinicians having more experience treating cases as possible explanations

The researchers said their findings underscore the need for more stringent regulation over the amount of THC, allowed in edibles and making edibles less appealing and accessible to children

Mining cobalt and nickel for EV batteries is an environmentally destructive practice because of toxic chemicals that seep into the soil and water of surrounding communities

These rare metals are also expensive to mine and will be subject to shortages in the future

Some EV’s use a device called a super capacitor, which stores energy through static electricity rather than a chemical reaction, like in conventional batteries

Super capacitors can absorb and release power faster than traditional lithium-ion batteries, meaning they take only a few minutes to charge up

In these batteries, a material called graphene is used to keep the battery from wearing out too quickly. But graphene is expensive and difficult to mass produce - and that’s where h**p comes in

To create these “cannabis cars”, scientists use h**p bark - a waste product created by cannabis plants - and cooked it to make a substance that resembles graphene

The technology is starting to spread

H**p lasts longer than graphene. It also stores more power and is easy to source, because it comes from one of the world’s fastest-growing plants.

H**p can be used in everything from building materials to clothing, food products, and even auto parts
