Each year I choose a new color of sketchbook. It signifies a fresh start. Lots of things will go on here, painting ideas, show schedules, grocery lists, random thoughts... ( I have a lot of random thoughts).
The bright green of new growth spoke to me this year. After feeling sort of stuck mentally I finally feel an internal log jam starting to break up. (Not physically, though I did just have coffee).

Old Oak by the Dikes
6x12", wrapped in aluminum

Part of my Denim series with an iridescent sky
I've painted this big oak a couple of times. It's like an old friend. Originally left by the first white settlers as a shelter tree in what was probably a pasture, the woods have since grown up around this giant. It grows near the flood control dikes on the Allegheny River near my apartment along with a few others that survived the axes of 200 years ago.

Sealed watercolor and gouache wrapped in aluminum. *Both the sky and the little crick are iridescent.
More snags. I love them. This little creek-which up here in Appalachia we call a CRICK ran under this spruce snag. Honestly it probably undermined the tree awhile back during a flood and toppled it.

A little stream running through a pasture next to a spruce covered hillside. The stream is iridescent like the sky.

I love the abstract lines they create. This painting is about that, based on a little section of Bell's Camp Road. Probably the most abstract piece in this year's collection

Hot damn I love Norway Spruce Trees. Normally I'm big on only planting native plants, but about 100 years ago these spruces were planted all over. So they aren't native (Norway and all), but they're such a big part of the landscape that I can't really imagine it without them. I experimented a bit with color and really juiced things up in the piece. Hope you like it.

Don't worry, there isn't another triptych coming...Well, it could be. The next set of paintings go well together. They're all aspens growing at the edge of pine trees in different spots. I love the stark contrast of the white bark against the dark pines.
Aspen often grow at the edge of woodlands here, where old cleared land butts up against older growth.
The textures in these turned out so cool, again, this is my new denim series

Rough Road Ahead

I've painted this dirt road leading up this hill a bunch of times. I'm mildly obsessed with it. It's also next to a house I want someday, right on the Allegheny River. The road is dark and mysterious, and often layered in fog from the river.

It would really suck to have to drive up in the winter and during mud season. Like REAALLLLY suck.

No girlscouts selling cookies up this bad boy.

Oh wait, maybe I don't want to live there after all?

These twin trunks grew after the original tree was cut down. The stump stayed alive, and shot up this huge double tree in about 110 years. I like the symbolism of that. You can always start over, and odds are you'll be stronger than before.

Chonky Boys

This line of maple trees in Medina NY were GIGANTIC. Big ole chonky boys. They shopped in the husky isle when they were kids. They also probably didn't have much luck with women until they got older and developed a wicked sense of humor.

I may be projecting a bit.

Pasture on Steam Valley Rd

Over the river and through the woods. Seriously, that's how you get to Steam Valley Road from my place. These trees are on the edge of a cow pasture. This spot is insanely gorgeous in the fall. So I decided to paint it in winter. 😅

I pass by this little copse of trees on my way to the walking trail in Gargoyle Park which I frequent. I had the urge to do a bit of a throwback to when I painted all my trees in bright yellow. I love the POP of color.

State Park Roads

Allegany State Park is the second biggest park in New York outside of the Adirondacks. It was also where some of my ancestors had their farm before they were bought out in the 30s. My grandfather's uncles planted a lot of these spruce trees while in the WPA. I go there and it's like my history is smacking me in the face over and over :). Seriously though, it's a special place to me and I encourage everyone to visit.

Just north of Ellicottville,NY. Maples are one of the things you often see in my paintings. I love their upright branching structure and how freaking huge they can get.

I'm a big fan of aspen. Their stark white trunks lend contrast and repetition of line in my paintings. They're also cool since they form big clonal clumps of trees. Out west some of them are 20,000 years old. Mammoths walked among them.

The skies in this set are an iridescent sapphire blue, I wanted to experiment with it and love how it almost gives a night time vibe.
