When you’re sitting in traffic, you and Ludacris might want to say: MOVE, please, GET OUT THE WAY. Traffic is an inevitability in the summer, but What If there’s a way you could know what to expect before you left? Sounds like a job for our Paint Map. Yes, it’s another busy summer construction & maintenance weekend. It Be Like That.

You might Walk, you might Run or you might travel on Wheels to concerts in Seattle, to visit our ocean beaches or take a weekend trip to Portland. No matter where you go, plan on lengthy delays and leave earlier than you think you need to. Take note of a couple of weekend-long ramp closures in Seattle (Montlake Blvd, Southbound I-5 to Mercer Street), so add more travel time for those detours. Or consider other forms of transportation like light rail, carpooling or Amtrak Cascades!

And please, don’t Bring the Madness with you or Act a Fool, on our roads. Slow down, be patient, be kind, pay attention, and make smart decisions if you’re travelling through our work zones or alongside cyclists or pedestrians.

For us, roadblocks are inconvenient. For fish, it can be deadly. That’s why we’re working to replace outdated and too-small culverts under our state roads to give fish better pathways through the water. This is the right thing to do, and it's also required in a court injunction that guides our approach.

This work doesn’t always happen overnight – it's repairing generations of environmental harm – but sometimes we see fish return almost as soon as the project is complete. We’re only one piece of the overall puzzle, but we’re making good progress.

Fish and chips in the Forks area! This sounds like a restaurant special, but - surprise - it's two separate fish projects and a chip seal project. Yum...?

-WHEN: Weekdays 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting Monday, Aug. 19, and through the first part of September
-WHERE: SR 110 from the Forks city limits to milepost 11.1 and on the SR 110 spur from the split with SR 110 to milepost 10.47.
-WHAT: Drivers will see delays and one-way alternating traffic with a pilot car through the work zones. Drivers can also expect to see speeds reduced to 25 mph.
-WHY: Chip seal pavement work

Work may be rescheduled due to weather, and weather rescheduling may cause work on a Saturday. For the latest info, check out our statewide travel map: https://wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/

We're not done yet! This work is in addition to two projects where we are removing barriers to fish under US 101 between Ruby Beach and Lake Crescent. You’ll see temporary traffic signals alternating travelers on a single lane at six locations. The speed limit is reduced to 25 mph at each work zone.

Hey, Everett: H-O-V T-O G-O, we have a new HOV lane ready to go! This morning, we opened the extended HOV/carpool lane between US 2, all the way to SR 529 just south of Marysville. The freeway now has FOUR lanes of northbound travel. This will ease some of the congestion through the area, as part of our I-5 Marine View Drive to SR 529 project.

We’re not quite done with that area, though. For the next two months, we’ll be paving, putting down permanent lane striping and finishing a new permanent barrier that separates travelers in each direction. This work won’t impact the number of lanes we have available, but we thought you should know.

We’re also making progress on a new off-ramp that will allow northbound I-5 to exit to SR 529, and a new on-ramp from SR 529 to southbound I-5. This work also involves a new roundabout, which will allow vehicles access to both directions of SR 529 or the on-ramp to southbound I-5. These ramps will open next year and will provide new options for people traveling to or from Marysville.

We serve all kinds of travelers, whether you’re driving, walking, rolling or swimming upstream to spawn.

We’re creating fish habitat along a bend in the Pilchuck River west of Granite Falls. This means we’re installing 52 giant log jacks along the riverbank, just off the edge of SR 92.

What’s a log jack? It’s a group of logs tied to a 5-ton boulder, and don’t call me Jack. The log jacks mimic naturally occurring logjams, which create places for our migrating fish to rest and hide from predators. If you’ve traveled along SR 92 recently, you may have seen our crews working hard to assemble these massive log jacks. We’ll begin placing them in the Pilchuck River later in August.

Expect daytime single-lane, alternating traffic just south of Sleepy Hollow Road. Please drive slowly and use caution in the work zone.

Heads up to Rockford-area travelers in Spokane County! A full closure of SR 27 begins tomorrow morning.

-When: Starting at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, and through the weekend
-Where: State Route 27 between Valley Chapel Road and Morris Road near Rockford (25 miles south of Spokane/Spokane County)
-What: State Route 27 closure
-Why: Contractor crews begin emergency work to replace a failed culvert.

A signed detour will be in place via Jackson Road between Valley Chapel and Morris.

Hate that the Olympics cancelled the “closing ramps to complete major construction” event because we would have taken gold...

Our athletes (workers) are preparing to medal in your favorite events (statewide road work projects) this weekend, including the Cone Toss, Concrete Wheelbarrow Race, Tire Filling, Dirt Digging and Hurdles (I think we’re legally obligated to tell you to not hurdle over road closure signs). There’s as many work zones as there are medal podiums in Paris. So, if you’re travelling this weekend, channel pommel horse hero Steve Nedoroscik — be patient, wait your turn and win the hearts of millions.

Be aware if you’re headed into the Seattle metro area, you may encounter some wild double trouble that could have you blasting off (we’re kind of mixing references here, it’s fine). SR 520 between Seattle and Bellevue will close weekend-long, in addition to several ramp closures in Seattle and Renton. There are detours in place but expect delays. No need to compete in mental gymnastics: Simply know before you go with our online travel map or mobile app. Don’t forget several cross-state routes are closed due to wildfire activity.

Welcome aboard, Arlo!

08/07/2024

Beginning Aug. 15, new toll rates for the SR 520 bridge will take effect, with an average increase of 10% (rounded to the nearest nickel).

Rates will vary depending on the time of day and day of the week, decreasing by 10 cents or increasing by up to 70 cents. Good To Go! customers can expect to pay between $1.35 and $4.90 on weekdays, and $1.35 and $2.95 on weekends.

Additionally, the new schedule will have six rate variations instead of the current eight.

These changes are required by state law to maintain travel speed and reliability while meeting the bridge’s financial needs. For more information on the rate-setting process, please visit the Washington State Transportation Commission's website: https://wstc.wa.gov/news/2024/07/10/new-toll-rates-adopted-for-sr-520-bridge/

Batten down the hatches, it’s the Seafair Weekend Paint Map!

Shiver me timbers, there’s a LOT of construction going on statewide, especially along the Olympic Peninsula. Plus, Seafair means a whole lot of vehicle and vessel traffic on roads around Lake Washington. The I-90 bridges between Seattle and Bellevue will be open, along with the trail, but remember: People biking, walking, or rolling should not stop or stand along the trail during the air shows. Don’t get marooned. Make a plan, travel in the morning and leave in the evening, and know before you go with our mobile app or real-time treasure (travel) map!

Other things to note, if you’re seasick of the Seattle area and venturing south, there’s roadwork along southbound I-5 in Woodland, and the delays are pretty daunting for you landlubbers. Don’t be a scallywag: Stay on I-5 and give yourselves plenty of time to get where you’re going. Or consider other forms of transportation like Amtrak Cascades. Expect heavy delays on I-90 between North Bend and Cle Elum Friday and Sunday afternoons due to Watershed. Travel safe, hearties!

That’s 68 work zone collisions. Not this year. Not this summer. Not statewide. Just the month of July across the greater Puget Sound area. We try to keep it pretty light on here, but it needs to be said: This is completely unacceptable and preventable.

Far too often, our workers are hurt in these types of collisions. Like many of you, they are just trying to do their jobs. Like many of you, they just want to go home to their families at the end of their shift. Whether we work during the day or night, the dangers road workers face has increased exponentially.

The good news is that the fix should be simple. The leading causes of these collisions are speeding, distracted driving, driving under the influence and following too closely. The solution is quite literally a matter of slowing down, giving the crews plenty of space to work and paying attention to your surroundings. It is literally up to you.

Please help our workers get home safely.

Last week, our state bridge engineers made the decision to further limit the types of vehicles that can use the 103-year-old SR 165 Carbon River/Fairfax Bridge in east Pierce County.

The new weight limit is 16,000 pounds or less. Your mid-size SUV will likely be under the limit, but you better check the weight of the pickup or RV you're driving/pulling before you go.

While there is no detour, we are working with private property owners to create an access route for locals and first responders.

Some of you will want to know if we plan on replacing this bridge. The answer is complicated.

The bridge is competing with other aging bridges for funds. Without more investment in preservation, we will continue to see more bridges weight listed, longer detours (where applicable) and highways with "rough road ahead" signs.

We highly recommend reading our blog about what this decision means for locals and visitors to the area: https://wsdotblog.blogspot.com/2024/07/sr-165-carbon-river-bridge.html

Seafair Festival weekend? More like SeaUNfair if you don’t plan ahead. It’s the 75th anniversary of the annual summer festival, expect SIGNIFIGANT traffic and congestion along I-5, I-90, I-405, SR 520 and all other city roads around Lake Washington this weekend. Yes, the I-90 bridges will be OPEN during the air shows. No, cyclists and pedestrians will not be allowed to stop and stand along the I-90 trail to watch.

Even if you don’t have plans to watch the show, if you’re heading out this weekend, it’s going to be tough going. Most of our construction around the Seattle area is off this weekend, but the SR 99 tunnel is closed Friday night to Saturday morning, and Seattle Department of Transportation has the eastbound West Seattle Bridge/Spokane Street Viaduct lanes closed between SR 99 & I-5 all-weekend. Plus, Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Sounders FC and the Seattle Mariners events. Consider travelling before 9 a.m. or after 6 p.m., give yourself more time than you think to get there, check our mobile app or online travel map before you go and stay safe on the lake and roads!

*pulls up chair* Everett, Marysville, and Snohomish County travelers, we need to talk.

As northbound I-5 between the two cities backs up during evening rush hour, we know it’s tempting to use Broadway, Marine View Drive, and/or SR 529 as an alternate route. Well, believe it or not, it’s neither a better nor faster way to go.

Travel delays on I-5 are typically in the 20–40-minute range. However, due to the bridge work on SR 529, average travel times using Broadway (or other Everett city streets) and SR 529 to cross the rivers/sloughs are in the 60–90-minute range, especially on Friday afternoons/evenings.

Neighboring streets have become gridlocked. We’ve seen drivers drive aggressively and create safety issues by making illegal U-turns, driving around Do Not Enter and Road Closed signs, preventing residents from leaving their driveways and even blocking hospital access.

We know the projects in the area make things challenging. When the northbound SR 529 bridge reopens this fall, the nearly 100-year-old bridge’s lifespan will continue for many years to come. The added HOV lane along northbound I-5 between US 2 and SR 529 is also set to open this fall. So if you must go through or access a place in Everett, use Broadway/SR 529. Heading to Marysville or beyond? It’s best to tough it out on I-5. We appreciate your patience!

SR 20 NORTH CASCADES HIGHWAY
UPDATE 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13

Our crew found a lot more mud than first estimated on SR 20 North Cascades Highway (see our newest pictures on this post). They've brought in more equipment, but cleanup is going to take several more days.

SR 20 remains closed between Granite Creek and Easy Pass trailhead (MP 148-157). The team will reassess on Monday, Aug. 19.

-----------

UPDATE: 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12
We have good news and bad news.

The bad news: A mudslide has covered approximately 100 feet of SR 20 after Sunday's rainfall in the North Cascades and will take at least two days to clean up.

The good news: the slide is inside the Easy Fire closure (MP 148-157).

We're working to clear it. Conditions will be reevaluated Wednesday, Aug. 14.

Tenemos buenas noticias y malas noticias.

UPDATE: 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7
SR 20 NORTH CASCADES HIGHWAY CLOSED THROUGH WEEKEND
State Route 20/North Cascades Highway will remain closed through the weekend between Granite Creek and Easy Pass trailhead (milepost 148-157) due to increased fire activity while fire crews work to reestablish fire lines. Conditions will be reevaluated Monday, Aug. 12.

The Easy Fire started July 16 near the Easy Pass trailhead. The fire has advanced toward the roadway, causing burning trees and debris to fall onto the roadway and created limited visibility due to smoke. There are no detours on U.S. Forest Service roads. East-west travel is possible using US 2 or I-90.

UPDATE: 6:15 p.m. Saturday, August 3:
SR 20 NORTH CASCADES HIGHWAY CLOSING

Due to an increase in fire activity on the Easy Fire, SR 20 North Cascades Highway will close between Granite Creek and Easy Pass trailhead (milepost 148-157) at 8 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 4.

The Easy Fire started July 16 near the Easy Pass trailhead. In the last 24 hours, fire activity has increased near the roadway, and this section of the road must close for the safety of travelers and fire response crews. The closure is in place until further notice. Obey road closure signs. There are no detours on U.S. Forest Service roads. Use US 2 or I-90 for cross state travel. We will post an update here when the highway reopens.

ORIGINAL POST- 1 p.m. Friday, July 26:

SR 20 NORTH CASCADES HIGHWAY IS OFFICIALLY OPEN AGAIN!

As of 1 p.m. Friday, July 26, State Route 20 North Cascades Highway has reopened near Granite Creek (mileposts 148-157), following a multiday closure due to fire activity from the Easy Fire.

Fire crews have been removing trees and brush adjacent to the highway and will continue fire migration work in the area.

That means flagger-controlled traffic and pilot cars from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. Expect delays of 30 minutes to allow fire crews to safely remove trees and brush from the roadway.

Please do not pull of the highway between mileposts 148 and 157 and remain alert for fire response and maintenance crews throughout the mountain passes. There are no detours on Forest Service roads. Never pass flaggers or pilot cars.

We know many of you are eager for the roadway to reopen, but please be courteous and look out for each other. The last thing anyone wants is a crash that closes the highway again because someone was traveling carelessly, too fast or unaware of their surroundings.

PLEASE NOTE: In order to ensure you aren't getting outdated information, this the final NEW post we will make about SR 20 North Cascades Highway open/close status due to Easy Fire. Any additional updates will be added to THIS post, accompanied by a date and timestamp. We will pin this post to the top of our page for easy reference.

-----

Just like A.C. Slater had to navigate high school drama, Whatcom County, get ready to navigate around upcoming southbound I-5 construction drama near Slater Road!

When: 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. weeknights beginning Monday night, July 29, and for the next several months

Where: The southbound I-5 interchange at Slater Road north of Bellingham.

What: Nightly single-lane closures on southbound I-5.

Why: We’re removing the old, compact roundabout between the off-and-on ramps to build a newer, larger, two-lane roundabout on Slater Road between Rural Ave and I-5. The larger roundabout will replace the current one built in 2014 to better manage congestion and improve safety through this area. This interim roundabout has successfully and safely kept traffic moving, but is due for an upgrade.

People traveling in this area should plan for extra time, and expect delays. That’s not all. Mid-September, expect a continuous two-week closure of the southbound I-5 on- and off-ramps at Slater Road (Exit 260). Signed detours will guide people around the ramp closures but require extra travel time too.

Hey Preppys, you can find more information about this project in the comments section below.

Traveling south on I-5 today through Southwest Washington? Heads up that there is construction through Woodland that will add 90+ minutes to your travel time.

There are no available alternate routes, and don't let Google fool you into thinking Green Mountain Road is a good idea. It's a trap!
This twisty, steep-grade, tight-turning county road can NOT handle interstate traffic volumes and you will get stuck.

Best idea is to travel early or late to avoid delays.

07/25/2024

Just can’t wait to get On the Road Again this weekend, Traveller? Use this Paint Map as your Companion!

So many events and construction, it may seem impossible avoiding getting Stuck in traffic. No need for A Deep Slow Panic, though. Be prepared, be patient, and recognize there’s a lot of people trying to get where they want to go. Leave early, plan for delays, and consider alternate forms of travel like mass transit, carpooling, Ferries, Amtrak Cascades or other forms of travel, especially in and out of Seattle on Saturday.

Wherever you’re headed to Soak Up the Sun or enjoy some Sunny Days, remember that we are right in the heart of wildfire season. There are SEVERAL HIGHWAYS CLOSED for firefighting operations. Some highways may reopen, others may close on a moment’s notice.

-Always check our mobile app or real-time travel map on our website before you route plan/head out.
-Always obey road closure signs and give fire crews plenty of room to work.

Travelling safely through these areas is vital: Even a minor collision can become a big problem. Also, we must all do our part to prevent sparking additional fires on our state's dry landscapes. Make sure your tow chains aren’t dragging, you aren’t parking on grass and you aren’t throwing cigarette butts out of your window.

Big thanks to our Superhero boots-on-the-ground crews and all other first responders who are working in hot, smoky, difficult conditions to control traffic, clear the roads, contain these fires and keep communities and travelers safe. Travel safe!

Ongoing wildfires are affecting roads across the state. Here’s what you need to know:

- SR 20 North Cascades Highway remains CLOSED in both directions near Rainy Pass between mileposts 148-157 due to the Easy Fire. Fire crews are currently snagging and brushing through the road closure area to create a fire line between the fire and the road.

- US 12 is CLOSED in both directions from the summit of White Pass (MP 151) to the junction of US 12 and Highway 410 (MP 185) due to the Retreat Fire. Downed power lines are across the road and burning logs are on the highway.

- SR 14 is CLOSED in both directions from Frontage Road (MP 133) to Alder Creek (MP 149) due to smoke from the Big Horn Fire.

- SR 21 is CLOSED in both directions from Keller Ferry (MP 106) to Cache Creek Road (MP 123) due to the Swawilla Fire.

-The Keller Ferry has resumed LIMITED operations to assist with fire evacuation. Those affected by the Swawilla Fire should use SR 21 to the north landing. Crews are operating the vessel from north to south ONLY.

TRAVELERS: Please be patient and recognize there’s a lot of people trying to get where they want to go. Because some of our east-west routes are closed due to wildfire activity, plan for delays, use the WSDOT mobile app or real-time travel map and always follow road closure signs.

These photos come from our crews assisting with roadside and wildfire response, while the aerial images come from the crews responding to the fires. As you can see, the fires are right up against – and even on! – the roads. This is what we mean when we ask people to not go beyond road closure points and to just give fire crews room to work.

THANK YOU to our boots-on-the-ground crews and all other first responders who are working in hot, smoky, difficult conditions to control traffic, clear the roads, contain these fires and keep communities and travelers safe.

We must all do our part to prevent sparking additional fires on our state's dry landscapes. Make sure your tow chains aren’t dragging, you aren’t parking on grass and you aren’t throwing cigarette butts out of your window.

Things change QUICKLY during fire season. This post could become outdated at a moment's notice. Make sure you're checking real-time travel updates: https://wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/

At long last, the new bridge over the Elwha River is open. Take a look back on 11 months of progress pictures!

Why did we build a new Elwha River Bridge? So we can get over it, of course. But also… back in 2016, we found out the nearly 100-year-old existing bridge sat on gravel instead of bedrock. That wasn’t what the original plans for the bridge showed, but here we are.

We took measures to prevent more erosion on the bridge’s piers, but, ultimately, we knew the bridge needed to be replaced.

What followed was two years' worth of public meetings and an extensive environmental review that completed in November 2021. Then came time to design. Finally, in April 2023, our contractor started constructing the new bridge.

Aaaand at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, the new Elwha River Bridge opened to traffic!

We still have plenty of work to do at the site. The biggest task left is to demolish the old bridge. We’ll also relocate the US 101/Olympic Hot Springs Road intersection to create a better sight line for travelers.

Read more about how we got this bridge across the finish line and the future work to come: https://wsdotblog.blogspot.com/2024/07/elwha-river-bridge.html

If you travel along US 97 near Riverside, some upcoming Johnson Creek Fish Passage Improvement project work will require a temporary detour.

-When: Monday, July 29, to Friday, Aug. 2 and then again from Aug. 12-30
-Where: US 97 at milepost 299 near Riverside
-What: A closure of a short section of US 97
-Why: The first closure (July 29-Aug. 2) is required so the contractor can remove the undersized culvert under the roadway and build the stream diversion. The second closure (Aug. 12-30) is required so the contractor can install the box culvert and restore the stream through the improved passage.

Detour info: The detour will be in place 24 hours a day Monday-Friday. During the closure, traffic will be detoured through the town of Riverside.

Omak Stampede travelers: Good news! The road will reopen to traffic without restrictions between Aug. 3-11, so you won't have to worry about a detour as you come and go.

The Johnson Creek Fish Passage Improvement project replaces four barrier culverts in lower Johnson Creek and reconnects 9 miles of spawning and rearing habitats for steelhead and Chinook salmon.

We’re about halfway through our online open house for this future paving project on US 101 in Clallam County. We have proposed several improvements to go along with paving US 101 to make the roadway better for everyone who uses it. The online open house closes August 5.

Already making weekend travel plans? If they include traveling I-5 between Lacey and Tacoma, you’ll want to know about some weekend daytime work coming up.

-When: 5 a.m. to noon, Saturday and Sunday, July 27-28
-Where: Nisqually River Bridge
-What: Northbound I-5 reduced to 2 lanes
-Why: We’re fixing some cracks found during a recent inspection underneath the bridge deck. We’ve got to use the large under inspection bridge truck for this work, so it has to be done during daylight hours for the safety of our crews.

Try to go before or after our work is scheduled. If you plan to be on the road when work is taking place, expect congestion – especially during late morning hours. If you're an adorable otter who has plans to float down the Nisqually River this weekend, your commute will not be impacted.

SR 20 CLOSED: Effective 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, SR 20 North Cascades Highway is closed in both directions between Granite Creek (MP 148) and Easy Pass trailhead (MP 157) due to wildfire activity and fire mitigation on the Easy Fire.

There is no estimated reopening time, and there are no local detours, so take US 2 or I-90.

I know it feels like we just went through this (we did!), but this is what we mean when we say wildfire conditions can change quickly.

Do not attempt to go around Road Closed signs.

------
