Good news! 04/13/2024

This is the final post from the front: after nearly a year of homelessness, Phoenix will be moving in to an apartment of her own on May 1st. She’s grateful for everyone who’s been there for her on this journey. Thanks for listening!

Phoenixsong Stellamaris, 71, never imagined she would be living in her car. But due to some bad luck, that's how she's been surviving in the Pacific Northwest since June 1, 2023.

Dehumanizing indignities 04/06/2024

It won't be for much longer, but Phoenix is still living in her car while she waits for her apartment to become available. In this episode she talks about one of the most dehumanizing indignities that's part of the homeless experience in this cruel capitalist society.

Dehumanizing indignities The cruelty of capitalism is enraging and disgusting. Public restrooms are almost non-existant, so when nature calls, many homeless people have no choice but...

Casual cruelty 03/30/2024

The end of her ordeal is finally in sight, but for now Phoenix is still living in her car. This episode talks about a recent incidence of casual cruelty which Phoenix found breathtaking. Would you have acted differently than these “good Christian women” at the Senior Center?

These short recordings are Phoenix’s way of documenting and sharing her homeless experience. Episodes are published once a week, sequentially, not as they happen. By the time any recording is published, any events mentioned will have already happened, but the emotional content is timeless.

Being invisible 03/23/2024

Just before she was about to leave the hotel to go back to sleeping in her car, Phoenix's car was broken into again, and this time they broke a window, ripped out ashtrays and really trashed it. Repairs will be costly and take some time. The most demoralizing thing about Phoenix's homeless experience is her feeling that she's become invisible to people she thought cared, and she's never felt more alone in all her life.

Fear 03/16/2024

Phoenix recorded this as her brief hotel stay was coming to an end in February, after all the plans that were giving her hope for building a new life came crashing down. With little tolerance left for living in her car, she speaks painful truth about the struggle to not let fear and self-loathing pull her under.

The break-in 03/09/2024

Phoenix’s car was broken into, most likely by other homeless people. On one hand, she’s angry, but on the other hand, she understands how people can be so desperate. Update: the hiking boots were later found.

Shame on you, AmeriKKKa! 03/02/2024

It's shameful that in one of the wealthiest countries on the planet, we’re so callous that we don’t care about people who are suffering, and abandon them to die on the streets. Dogs get more consideration than these people!

How homelessness impacts friendships

Being in a position of need – even in the best case scenario – puts a strain on relationships between people. This week, Phoenix talks about one of the worst aspects of her experience as a homeless person.

From the bottom of my heart I would like to thank everyone who donated to the GoFundMe to help get me out of the cold. I am safe at my favorite hotel in downtown Olympia thanks to you! I will be here until the 29th,got here February 1st.Such a welcome respite. I never realize how exhausted I am until I get somewhere safe where I can sleep in a real bed and don't have to constantly worry about being cold, driving to get to a bathroom, and spending too much money buying gasoline for my car so I can run the engine to keep warm.

Shame 02/10/2024

Capitalist society has us believing that if we don't have money, if we don't have a house, if we don't have status, we're worthless. Even though intellectually she knows this is not right, Phoenix still falls prey to feeling ashamed about being homeless.

Forced into the arms of corporate entities 02/03/2024

Today Phoenixsong Stellamaris touches on the heavy topic of having to forego cherished political activism (long-standing boycotts) in order to find a warm place to spend hours each day and to get the basic necessities of life. Being homeless can force you to make unpleasant choices, but sometimes survival has to win out. https://youtu.be/RmcMhY0EuJ8
