These American Wigeons are a beautiful reminder of why you should take a wintertime water fowl walk this month! Whether it be at dusk or dawn, there’s plenty of birds on the wing, in the wetlands, and swimming through the waters all across Nisqually this time of year as they continue their great migrations. What birds do you hope to see?

Thank you to all the volunteers who joined for tree planting this MLK Jr Day! It was a little bit chilly, but the ground was warm and we had so much fun getting muddy in the snow while helping to restore our beautiful watershed! November Volunteer Tree Planting
Nisqually Stream Stewards joined Nisqually Land Trust volunteers this past Saturday to help plant, stake, and tube trees out near Eatonville and we couldn’t have asked for better weather! Thank you to all who came out and helped plant this weekend, the care we put in today will ensure a healthier forest tomorrow! October has come and gone and tree planting season has begun! The fields are prepped and ready for local students and volunteers to come out and help us restore the forest lands of our watershed with a diverse group of native plants! Stay tuned for more updates from these trips and learn how you can get involved this season 🌲

This summer the Nisqually River Council met for their Annual Retreat and after a long and productive meeting, staff helped council members perform a beach seine on the shores of the Nisqually Reach! Activities like these help introduce citizen science and an appreciation for our environment to students and community member alike! The catch for the day included sculpin, shiner perch, crabs, shrimp, and even flounder - all of which were returned safely to the Puget Sound! #nisqually #reach #river #council #education #project #foundation #NRC #NRF #NREP #NRNC #nonprofit #retreat #beach #seine #environment #conservation #community #science #nature #puget #sound #Washington #PNW

One more throwback to our Nisqually River Clean Up this Spring! While our Nisqually Stream Stewards stayed ashore hauling trash off of rafts, boats, and kayaks; volunteers from the Washington Kayak Club, Washington Recreational River Runners, and Paddle Trails Canoe Club we’re busy at work scooping up over 1,500 pounds of trash along 17 miles of the Nisqually River! A big thank you to Kanako who helped make this event happen and who also filmed and edited this video! Torrential rain, brilliant sunshine, and serene rainbows 🌈 It’s all in a days work at the mouth of the Nisqually River where Washington’s Spring weather sends us running inside in the morning and sprinting back out in the afternoon :) At least we don’t have to worry about watering the gardens today!

Happy Wildlife Wednesday! Our cameras at Pack Forest have been busier than ever recently and we’re happy to see salmon nutrients going to good use! It’s always exciting to catch a glimpse of our wild watershed neighbors and a good reminder of why conserving this land is so important! Check out the bobcat we saw on our trail cam along the Mashel River this week! #nisqually #river #foundation #watershed #bobcat #mashel #trailcam #wildlife #cats #NRF #NRC #NREP #january #washington #pnw #winter

Nothing quite like watching the little wild animal families at the Refuge to make Mondays feel better!
