This Spring the NREP welcomed two interns from The Evergreen State College’s Center for Climate Action and Sustainability (CCAS)! Over the course of several months Colbi & Colton jumped into environmental education with enthusiasm and dedication leading hundreds of students in Salmon, Cedar, Canoe cultural field trips; marine & nearshore ecology investigations; and even habitat restoration projects! We’re so thankful for their hard work and can’t imagine our year without them both.

Check out our blog post and read all about how the NREP is working with CCAS to build engaging internships that benefit young students and young professionals alike: https://nisquallyriver.org/blog/2024/07/24/spring-interns-make-an-impact-with-the-nrep/

Another successful Summer Institute for Teachers is now in the books! Last week, 50 local educators joined us for a three-day workshop series focusing on salmon recovery. Teachers and district staff engaged in hands-on workshops, listened to insights from local biologists and restoration experts, and participated in inspiring discussions aimed at enhancing their skills and bringing locally relevant science into the classroom. This annual training event is proudly hosted by the Nisqually River Education Project in collaboration with our partners at South Sound GREEN and the Chehalis Basin Education Consortium. A huge shoutout to all our guest speakers and hosts for making this event a success: Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, The Salmon Center, Long Live the Kings, Nisqually Indian Tribe, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), Pierce Conservation District, Deschutes Estuary Restoration Team, Thurston County Washington, Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office, and Mason Conservation District.

Nisqually Stream Stewards spent this past weekend learning all about the Nearshore & Marine Ecology of the Nisqually Reach! The day included talks about community science while stewards looked at live phytoplankton and zooplankton samples then everyone geared up in waders for a beach seine (full of fish) and a beach crab / benthic survey (over 90 crabs were counted and no European green crab were found).

Stewards walked away knowing more about the importance of this habitat not only for humans, but for the birds, fish, and other animals that hunt, rear, and live where the Nisqually River meets the Puget Sound! Thank you to our partners at the Nisqually Reach Nature Center for making this event possible!

Nisqually Stream Stewards joined the Nisqually Indian Tribe’s 26th Annual Leschi-Quiemuth Honor Walk this past weekend to learn more about the ancestral lands of the Nisqually people while viewing the camas and other natural beauties of our Washington prairies. While the Nisqually were removed from this land in 1917, it still holds an important place in the culture and lives of many Tribal and community members who are able to return each year for this experience.

Today the Tribe works cooperatively with Joint Base Lewis-McChord to hold this walk as a form of education and remembrance.

Nisqually Stream Stewards geared up for the rain and water this afternoon and headed out to the Nisqually Reach with Washington State Department of Natural Resources ANeMoNe program staff to learn all about nearshore monitoring of ocean acidification and eelgrass populations! This program engages volunteers to help monitor our waters in the hope that this information can help inform decisions that reduce the negative impacts of changing ocean conditions. The field training involved bird surveys, sensor cleaning, eelgrass surveys, and even discussing the uses of shellfish spats!
