Sherry Dickerson, COFLT's 2023 Teacher of the Year will facilitate our 5th of 6 professional development webinars on Monday, August 19th from 4-5 pm Pacific: Global Competence in the Language Classroom
In this workshops, teachers will learn how to facilitate virtual exchanges that foster global competence, explore student and teacher travel opportunities, and learn more about global teaching frameworks. Teachers will determine how to use the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a curricular model and see examples of student inquiry projects based on global themes.

"Feuerwerk" is Paul Asleson's walk up song! Paul represents Montana as their state finalist for PNCFL Teacher of the Year. Please leave Paul a message in the comments or come celebrate him with all 6 state finalists. We're ready to meet and welcome you at the University of Washington in Seattle!

Paul is currently in his 10th year of teaching and currently works as a German teacher in Billings Public Schools. He teaches primarily upper level classes and is also the department chair for world languages at his school. He is very involved with the AP German course, including being a reader for the exam each summer, working on a content development team for the AP exam, as well as recently becoming a consultant for the College Board.

Today's State Teacher of the Year video recognizes Sherry Dickerson from COFLT!
She (and all the 6 State Teacher of the Year finalists) are to be commended, recognized, and rewarded for their professionalism and accomplishments. Join us at Friday's Gala Award Ceremony to help us honor their work.

Sherry Dickerson is an accomplished Spanish teacher who is passionate about inspiring students to be global citizens who will make positive impacts in their communities and abroad. She
incorporates a variety of instructional strategies that provide for real-world learning such as reading buddies at a local elementary school and a virtual exchange project with a school in
Spain. Her students engage in service-learning opportunities by learning about global issues and taking action locally and globally. In addition, she teaches Instructional Design in Teaching
Modern Languages to undergraduate pre-service teachers at an online university. Beyond the classroom, she has shared her expertise at conferences hosted by COFLT, PNCFL, IALLT, and
Global CRED. As a 2024 NEA Foundation Global Learning Fellow and a student international trip leader, she inspires her students to use their language skills in authentic contexts as they
develop intercultural competence.

Kei Tsukamaki (she/her) teaches Japanese 1-AP and is the World Languages Team Leader at Juanita High School in Kirkland, WA. She has been teaching for 13 years. In addition to classroom teaching and serving on school and district committees, she has been a board member of the Washington Association of Teachers of Japanese for 11 years, serving seven years as President. In 2022 she was named the American Association of Teachers of Japanese K-12 Teacher of the Year. Her professional interests are in curriculum and assessment design, effective feedback to promote student self-efficacy, and social-emotional learning. She is certified to teach Japanese and Spanish. Outside of teaching, she enjoys spending time with her husband Scott and dog Raven.
