A Call for Unity: Overcoming Division During the Olympics

The Olympics are such a beautiful experience. It’s such a unique feeling when the whole world focuses its energy into one place, and how connected we become to each other when one event has the world’s attention for a little while. This Olympics feels especially meaningful to me in our post-pandemic world and with major wars raging on, it’s truly refreshing to feel connected in this way to my fellow humans over something as fun as playing games together.

I felt so much sadness, however, when after the Olympics had just started so many people came forward not just angry, but raging about the opening ceremony. My social feed was filled with comments calling the people involved ‘Groomers’ (among many other things), those comments being responded to by telling the ‘Trump Lovers’ to calm down, and those comments being answered by telling the ‘Dems’ they need to find Jesus. I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture.

It broke my heart to see so much division coming forth in a moment whose main purpose is to bring the world together. And ironically, during a ceremony that focused on the unity between us all. There seems to be a general consensus among most of us that we as a country, as well as the entire world, are struggling with a deep division that is and has been causing us all great harm. Of course, this is something that has always been an issue for the human race, but it seems especially scary now that the internet allows us to hear exactly how loud and angry that division is.

It’s so interesting though, when you really stop and listen to what each side is saying, how similar the underlying message is. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Republican or Democrat, or any of the other divided groups among us, the message is “I have a right to express my beliefs, if your beliefs are different than mine then you are a terrible person and you need to change.” Really think about that for a moment. When we live divided, we all treat each other the same way. It doesn’t matter how “right” you think your beliefs are, if you are telling others that their beliefs, their reality is wrong then you are part of the problem of division we are facing.

This brings me back to the opening ceremony. At its core, it was a beautiful moment of a country expressing its culture, while sharing a message of love, unity, and inclusion to all, not just the people they agree with but the whole world. Were there some parts I thought were odd? Sure, there was plenty of stuff there that I personally wouldn’t have included in an event like that. But that’s the thing, it isn’t my culture, it isn’t my reality, I can’t say how I would want to express my culture if I grew up in France, it may have been the exact same way. I can say that I genuinely appreciate how they tried to include so many groups and different types of people and bring forth the message of love and unity between us all, instead of throwing hate and judgment towards people which doesn’t do anything except deepen the expansive divide between us.

I for one am very grateful for how the French express themselves. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy some of the greatest art this world has. We wouldn’t be able to admire the engineering of the Eiffel Tower. And, we of course wouldn’t have our national landmark, the Statue of Liberty, which holds so much hope and meaning for us as a country. Thinking about it like that, it seems silly that we happily accept some of the French creative expression, and then turn right around and judge them for the things that don’t make sense to us.

We all have different beliefs, experiences, and realities, that’s what makes this world so beautiful. The diversity between us all which allows us to learn from each other and grow together. But when we see those differences, and immediately go on the attack and start yelling about how offended we are by how another person sees the world we just stay stuck in a fearful place of hate and division. We definitely don’t have to agree with everything we see, but we should always meet each other with love first, compassion, and a willingness to try to understand. And again, if we don’t, we are the ones keeping the world divided.

Right now, more than ever, we are being given a golden opportunity to overcome the differences that keep us apart and cause wars. Never before, have we been able to communicate, see and hear each other’s expressions like we can now. It’s up to each and every one of us if we want to take this opportunity and make this world a better, more loving place for us all, or if we want to stay in a hateful, judgmental, and angry place. The choice is yours, I hope you will choose love. 💗

Check out our Black Bean & Kale BBQ Burger

INGREDIENTS
1 cup cooked brown rice
1 cup cooked or canned black beans drained and rinsed
1 cup kale
1/2 cup sweet or yellow onion
1/2 cup cooked corn kernels
1/4 cup cooked potato chopped
2 Tbsp cornmeal
1 Tbsp BBQ Sauce
2 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp chili powder
1 tsp sea salt
1 1/2 tsp liquid smoke

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Roughly chop the kale and place in a bowl with 1 Tbsp. of water and cook in the microwave on high for 2 minutes. Carefully remove bowl and drain liquid.
2. Place the rice, beans, onion, potato, cornmeal, BBQ sauce, garlic powder, chili powder, liquid smoke, and salt into a food processor. Pulse a few times until chunky. Add the kale along with the corn and pulse a few more times. Don’t over-pulse or the mixture will get too soft.
3. Remove the mixture into a bowl, and put it in the fridge for at least 20 minutes; an hour is best. Making it the day before and letting it sit overnight is optimal. This helps all the flavors marinate and leads to a sturdier burger.
4. To cook, shape the mixture into patties approximately 1/3 cup each. Lightly oil the pan. Place the patties in a pan on the stovetop over medium heat for 10 minutes on each side. Pans and stovetops vary, so begin to check the patties at 6 minutes. If you try to slide your spatula under a patty and it won’t give, then it isn’t ready and needs to cook longer. You may also bake the patties on a parchment-lined cookie sheet at 375 for about 20 to 25 minutes on each side.

Enjoy! 🍔💚😊
