WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Many of you are familiar with the Rathskeller building near Farnam and Saddle Creek. The building, which has survived through many iterations including Caffeine Dreams, the 3 J’s Bar, the Recovery Room, and more, has stood since the 1890s. The current Sullivanesque style has existed since alterations were made in 1911 by local contractor John H. Harte. There are only a handful of Sullivanesque style buildings left in Omaha, making this property especially unique.

UNMC owns the Rathskeller building and we are concerned for its future. The Rathskeller Bier Haus was affected by UNMC’s campus expansion construction and has been closed since early 2023. UNMC shows “Future Growth” on their master plan where the Rathskeller sits. While we don’t know what UNMC’s plans for the Rathskeller are, we have seen the University’s demolitions across Blackstone and Leavenworth Street and are doing everything we can to prevent the Rathskeller from being next.

We are speaking at the Board of Regents meeting today to not only advocate for the preservation of the Rathskeller, but to implore the Regents to adopt policies that would prohibit the demolition of historic structures that are owned by the University and abide by local historic designation of buildings. As John Sawhill said, “In the end, our society will be defined not only by what we create, but by what we refuse to destroy.” Help us advocate for the Rathskeller and preservation by contacting the Board of Regents ([email protected], 402-472-3906).

I've loved fashion ever since I can remember. I grew up with my mom always making clothing and Halloween costumes for us. When I graduated high school, I went to the Art Institute of Colorado to major in fashion design. When I graduated with my associates degree, I decided that I didn't want to work for a larger fashion label. If I was going to design clothing, it would have to be a passion project, 100% me! In 2005, I launched an online alternative/rockabilly clothing company with a friend called Blonde Brigade apparel. This lasted for about 2 years until I got a divorce and underwent some major life changes. It took a while for me to really want to pursue my design again. The pandemic in 2020 turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Temporarily out of work, I had time to design and sew again, and this was when Harbinger Clothing came to be!
I am very inspired by vivid color and contrasting textures. I guess you could say that my designs cover the span of alternative style from goth to punk to boho and cottagecore. Each piece is one of a kind and has my heart poured into it.

We create unique retro items with a hint of the pop culture, the odd or the macabre. We love what we do, and we want to share it with others with similar interests. Our little company started with a random act of boredom. My son Reid had a day off and nothing to do so he decided to try something new. He loves foraging and experimenting with recipes so he thought he’d make dandelion honey. I was shocked at how delicious it was! We gave some to friends and family and every single person said the same thing: it was so clean tasting and perfectly sweet.

So we decided to see how other people would like it and started Reid’s Dandelion Honey. Reid has painstakingly tweaked the recipe to achieve the perfect color and the perfect consistency. If a batch isn’t up to par, he fixes it. Quality is of utmost importance.

This honey is quite different from bee’s honey. It has a thinner texture and distinct flavor. It’s a perfect sweetening substitute for any recipe and is suitable for vegans since it’s made solely from plants. No bees involved!

Currently, we offer individual jars in 4 oz, 6 oz and 8 oz sizes as well as a gift bag that includes a 1.5 oz jar, a 3” honey dipper and an organic dandelion teabag from Traditional Medicinals.

We also have 5 oz syrup bottles. The syrup is the same recipe as the honey but is reduced and caramelized for less time to result in a consistency of syrup and a light golden color.

We are actively working on new variations to include brown sugar honey and infused flavors like grapefruit, orange, lavender and turmeric.

I continue to be a proud co-owner of this business with my son and our goal is to make Reid’s Dandelion Honey a household name.

Throughout October, I’ve crafted daily or weekly drawing prompts designed to ignite your creativity and add a touch of Halloween magic to your life. And because we can’t forget Dia De Los Mu***os, two extra days are included to honor this beautiful tradition.
