And he never took his eyes off of me…
Not quail related but I just had to brag on how good my boy is at holding a long distance “stay”
A short study on the differences between quail eggs and chicken eggs.
First is size. Obviously the chicken egg is much larger than the quail egg but how different in size are they? Well, the short answer is it depends. No two eggs are quite the same size, shape, color, etc. I generally tell people that a chicken egg equals about 3-5 quail eggs but if you want to get technical you can break out the scale and I did just that today.
I chose what would be considered a “Large” egg from the basket and weighed it. 2.2 oz or 62 grams. Then I weighed a quail egg, 0.5 oz or 14 grams. Next, I grabbed as many quail eggs as needed to get a weight similar to my chosen chicken egg. 5 quail eggs weighing in at 64 grams was as close as I got to the chickens 62 grams.
I also took some side by side pictures of the eggs to compare versus each other and when laid in my palm and when cracked in a container to show how the contents itself compared.
If you’re wondering why the color of the quail egg yolk is paler compared to the chicken egg yolk the answer is simple…marigold! My chickens eat a feed that has marigold in it! (Yes like the flower!) marigolds contain a pigment that changes the color of egg yolks but doesn’t affect the taste in any way (you’re not going to turn orange from eating them I promise!)
Later I’m going to make a post about opening quail eggs since I get asked that question a lot!
Coming soon…

It’s that time of the week again!
Taking good pictures of quail is hard…
How many dozen eggs do you think I got this week?
Eggs eggs eggs! Currently I’m getting about 7 and a 1/2 dozen eggs in a week! That’s roughly a dozen (give or take) a day!
Did you know that a female coturnix quail lays about 300 eggs a year?! That’s about 900 eggs in her lifetime!
Welcome to the Rockin’ R Quail Cottage!
Here we have a beautiful covey of Coturnix quail all originating from NPIP certified hatcheries and in a variety of gorgeous colors!
Coturnix (aka Japanese quail) are amazing birds for both egg and meat production or just to look at!
We hope you’ll join us as we continue to grow our covey!
