A massive pool chemical factory caught fire in Georgia this week. So far, thankfully, no one’s been hurt, and the fire has been put out. But it left potentially harmful chlorine lingering in the air.
This is not the first time this has happened. If you’ve owned a pool for a while, you might remember there was a chlorine shortage in 2021 and prices of trichlor tablets soared! This was a direct result of a similar fire at the same chemical plant in August 2020.
So, what does this mean for you?
I expect we’re going to have another chlorine shortage in 2025. And we’re probably going to see chlorine prices soar again! If you use chlorine, it’s a good idea to stock up on chlorine in the off-season, like right now.
Our off-season hours are beginning!
It is that time of year! Schedule your pool closing today!

With all of the wind, rain and storms that we had this week, make sure to check and clean out your skimmers! Stopped up skimmers can cause issues with pump filtrations and be costly.
Fall is starting which means it is time to close and cover pools! We install all types of pool and safety covers. Call us today for a quote! (205)762-0856.

Does your pool smell like chlorine? Like really, REALLY smell like chlorine?
Weirdly enough, it doesn’t mean there’s too much chlorine in your pool. In fact, it actually means you don’t have ENOUGH active chlorine in your water.
That strong chlorine smell comes from “used up” chlorine, a.k.a. Chloramines. When your free chlorine combines with contaminants in the water, these nasty-smelling chloramines are formed.
You can get rid of chloramines by shocking your water with a chlorine shock or an oxidizer (a.k.a. Non-chlorine shock).
This will break up the “used up” chlorine and raise your free chlorine levels back to where they need to be. And it will stop smelling. This is also a good idea for salt water pools.
DOES MY POOL HAVE A LEAK?
The average pool loses up to 3.5 inches of water weekly from evaporation.
But how do you know if it’s evaporation or something worse? To find out, use the bucket test.
Place a 5-gallon bucket on the step of your pool. Fill the bucket up to match your pool’s water level.
Then mark the water level on both the outside and the inside of the bucket. Turn everything off and wait 24 hours.
Then compare the two levels. If the water has gone down more on the outside than the inside, it's a leak.
If it’s the same, it's evaporation.
Maybe you’re wondering: when is the right time to open up my swimming pool? Well, it’s better to open sooner rather than later. Otherwise, algae could start growing underneath your winter cover. As a general rule of thumb, you should open your pool when the outside daytime temperature stays consistently above 70 degrees (or 21 degrees celsius). 70 degrees is still a little too cold to go swimming, but it’s not too cold for algae.
As the weather starts to warm up, algae can start to grow in your pool water – especially if you use a mesh pool cover and the water is exposed to sunlight.
