Every year, nearly one billion birds collide with lit structures and glass in the United States. These tragic, and preventable collisions happen most often at low-rise buildings and homes. Light attracts migrating birds off their path and increases their risk of collisions with buildings and other structures. Fortunately, we can use easy and cost-saving solutions to prevent these threats to birds. By turning off unnecessary lights, closing curtains, and adding small, discrete patterns spaced 2-inches by 2-inches apart we can help birds and save money.
These talks are a part of the NCTC Conservation Lecture Series, which is cosponsored by Friends of the National Conservation Training Center and the Potomac Valley Audubon Society.
No tickets or reservations are required. All are welcome!
The presentation will be recorded and available for online viewing on September 19th at 2:00pm ET from the NCTC Broadcast page.
This time of year, it is time to bid farewell to Ruby-throated hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) as they pass through Tennessee on their return south for the winter. In the meantime, you might see them fueling up at your feeders or at late summer native plants that are still in bloom.
Ruby-throated hummingbirds are the only species of hummingbird that nests east of the Mississippi. Among the tiniest birds in the world, they weigh just 1/8 ounce, less than a penny. Males, who boast the red throat, are smaller than females. And did you know . . . hummingbirds can fly backwards, upside-down and sideways, and Ruby-throated hummingbirds beat their wings at 53 beats per second!
