Is it safe to let your dog swim in a lake or river?

Letting your dog swim or simply lap up lake, river, or pool water can make them very sick. These bodies of water can contain bacteria, algae, parasites, chemicals, or salt.

Swimming can also be very tiring for dogs. Stay close to your pet and make sure they take breaks in the shade. Don't assume your dog knows how to swim, keep your eyes on them and you may want to use a floating vest to help them, until you are confident they can swim.

Rinse off your dog or give them a bath after swim sessions.

A post of a baby's smile or laughter is the best way to start your Monday

Many animals love the water, and it is a great way to cool off in the summer heat. If you don't have a pool in your back yard, you could purchase a medium size plastic pool for them to play in. If you know your dog can swim well, you could take them to the lake to splash around a bit, or fetch a stick or something that can float.
