Exercise & ED
Aerobic exercise such as walking, jogging and cycling may improve the symptoms of erectile dysfunction (ED), according to a new study. Researchers analyzed 11 randomized trials involving about 1,000 men with ED. They discovered that those who exercised 30 to 60 minutes 3 to 5 times a week saw improvement in their ED symptoms when compared to those who didn't exercise. The review also revealed that the worse a man's ED was, the more the exercise helped. The researchers said that the aerobic exercise groups in the studies saw reductions in symptoms that were on par with use of ED medications.
Gratitude & Loneliness
In a recent study, researchers found that people who feel more gratitude tend to experience less loneliness. They found that if someone scored above average in gratitude, there was a 62% chance they'd also score low in loneliness. Loneliness is a distressing emotion that can contribute to various negative health outcomes such as depression, cardiovascular disease and even cognitive decline. Keeping a gratitude journal, seeing challenges as opportunities, reframing negative thoughts, regularly expressing thanks (especially to those close to you) and practicing mindfulness may help promote gratitude.

Potassium & Kidney Disease
Eating a diet that includes potassium-rich foods may help lower the risk of chronic kidney disease, according to recent research. In an observational study, scientists tracked about 106,000 adults, ages 40 to 69, for 12 years. Those who reported eating the most potassium had a 14% reduced risk of chronic kidney disease. The study proves only an association, not a cause-and-effect relationship. However, previous research suggests a DASH-like diet, which is high in potassium, helps lower blood pressure. High blood pressure is a factor that raises kidney disease risk. Some foods high in potassium are avocados, watermelon, spinach, beans, potatoes, bananas and crushed tomatoes.

Know Women's Stroke Symptoms
Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted, preventing oxygen from getting to brain cells, or there is a bleed in the brain. Common symptoms may include numbness or weakness on one side of the face or body, severe headache, loss of vision, dizziness, or difficulty speaking or understanding. Women with stroke may present with less common symptoms: lightheadedness or fainting; general fatigue and weakness; racing heart, chest pain or shortness of breath; sudden behavioral changes such as hallucinations, agitation or confusion; and vomiting and nausea. Because of this, women can often be misdiagnosed, which may result in delayed treatment.

Weight Loss May Reverse Diabetes
A new study suggests that for people recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, weight loss may reverse their diabetes. The participants in the study had not been treated with insulin, but all had excess weight. For the study, researchers had participants dramatically cut calories by eating only meal replacement shakes and 2 cups of non-starchy vegetables per day for 13 weeks. After that, they reintroduced food over the next 8 weeks. However, if diabetes or weight returned, they could resume meal replacement shakes again for 4 weeks. At the one-year mark, 56% of the participants no longer had diabetes. Most people in the study lost an average of 20 lbs.
Biking May Prevent Knee Arthritis
According to a new study, cycling when you are young and continuing throughout your life may help you enjoy better knee health later in life. Researchers analyzed data from 2,600 people between the ages of 45 and 79 who were participating in a knee arthritis study. Of those in the study, about half reported having a consistent habit of biking. Researchers found that the bicyclists were 21% less likely to have symptoms of knee arthritis, compared to those who rarely biked. Results were the same whether they biked indoors on a stationary bike or rode outdoors.
Exercise & Heart Failure
Exercise may improve symptoms for people with heart failure, according to new research. Heart failure can occur when the heart muscle doesn't pump the blood properly. Blood can back up and cause fluid to accumulate in the legs and/or in the lungs. This buildup of fluid can cause swelling in the legs and feet and shortness of breath. In the recent study, researchers measured the steps of heart failure patients with a pedometer and found that those who walked even 1,000 to 2,000 steps a day saw improvement in their symptoms. Those doing 4,000 to 5,000 steps daily saw even greater benefits.
Olive Oil & Dementia
A new study suggests that heart-healthy olive oil may be good for your brain, as well. Researchers studied data on the diets of 90,000 adults for a span of 30 years. Those who reported eating a half tablespoon or more a day of olive oil had a 28% reduced risk of dementia, compared to those who rarely ate olive oil. The polyunsaturated and mono- unsaturated oils found in olive oil, nuts, fish and avocados are associated with lower rates of dementia. Other research has suggested that eating a Mediterranean diet, of which olive oil is a key ingredient, could slow cognitive decline.
Pains You Shouldn't Ignore
Severe headache, one that comes on very suddenly and is the worst headache of your life, could signal an aneurysm or bleeding in the brain. If your chest pain feels like an elephant is sitting on your chest, suspect a heart attack and call 911. Throbbing and swelling in one leg, usually the calf or thigh, may be a blood clot. Get prompt treatment; it can travel to the heart, brain or lungs, causing life-threatening problems. Severe abdominal pain on the lower right side could signal appendicitis and needs emergency care before it bursts. Lower back pain with fever could be a kidney infection, which left untreated can be life-threatening.
FAST Procedure For Tennis Elbow
FAST (Fasciotomy and Surgical Tenotomy) is a minimally invasive procedure that removes tendon scar tissue quickly and safely without affecting surrounding healthy tendon tissue. The patient is administered a local anesthetic and is fully awake. The doctor utilizes ultrasound imaging to identify the scar tissue and uses a small instrument to precisely extract the damaged tissue. The incision is only 3 mm long, and no stitches are required. Recovery is generally fast and easy. If you have tennis elbow and have already tried other treatments without pain relief, talk with your doctor about the FAST procedure.
Seniors & Volunteering
Volunteering later in life not only helps your community, but may also help protect your brain from cognitive decline, according to new research. Researchers found that those who volunteered had better baseline scores on tests of executive function and verbal episodic memory than those who didn't, even after adjusting for age, s*x, education and income. Also, those adults with the highest levels of cognitive function were people who volunteered several times per week. Volunteering offers cognitive stimulation, an opportunity to be more physically active and increased social interaction.
Backyard Pool Safety
Follow these safety tips from the American Red Cross to help prevent accidental drowning. Never leave children unattended near water. A child can fall into a pool and drown in just a matter of minutes. Always keep basic lifesaving equipment nearby. Among these items should be U.S. Coast Guard-approved flotation devices (life jackets and ring buoys) and a reaching pole. Some families install pool alarms, which add extra protection. Put a fence at least 4 ft. high around the pool area with a self-closing, self-latching gate that is locked when the pool is not in use. You and any caregivers should be trained in CPR. Teach your children to swim at an early age.
Fireworks Safety
Adults should always supervise any fireworks activities. Obey all local laws regarding fireworks. Read labels carefully and follow directions. Do not allow children to handle fireworks, especially sparklers. These hand-held fireworks can burn at temperatures around 1800 degrees and are the No. 1 cause of fireworks injuries to children. Make sure the launch area is open and away from homes, people and pets before lighting fireworks. Always have a hose or bucket of water nearby. Never relight a dud; wait 20 minutes and then soak it in water. When attending public displays, stay well behind safety barriers.

Relax β It Does Your Body Good
Stress often triggers the "fight or flight" response, which if chronic can have a negative effect on your health. Learning to activate the body's relaxation response can counter the effects of stress. It lowers heart rate and breathing. It lowers blood pressure by reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol. It aids digestion and reduces inflammation in the gut. It may reduce pain by easing muscle tension. Practicing relaxation through meditation or deep breathing stimulates the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers. Reducing stress hormones lessens anxiety and helps you focus. Finally, relaxation may help you sleep.
Anger & Heart Risk
If you are often angry, you may be injuring your blood vessels. A recent study of young adults with no history of heart disease found that being in an angry state was linked with the temporary inability of blood vessels to relax and dilate properly. Impaired dilation impedes blood flow and is a precursor to atherosclerosis (the buildup of plaque in artery walls.) Participants were monitored for blood vessel changes during sessions that elicited different emotions, but only anger affected the blood vessels. The effect lasted up to 40 minutes after the angry episode.
Health Benefits Of Grapes
Grapes are packed with many compounds that are good for you. Grapes are rich in potassium, which helps balance the fluids in your body. They're also a good source of vitamin E, which is beneficial for hair and skin. Grapes contain resveratrol, a potent antioxidant that strengthens the immune system and may also prevent or delay the growth of some cancers. Grapes may also help protect the brain. In a study of people with early cognitive decline, the group who received whole grape powder (equivalent to 2-1/4 cups of grapes per day) showed improvement in cognition and working memory compared to those in the placebo powder group.

Time-Restricted Eating
New research suggests that limiting eating to a specific window of time helped participants (all of whom were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes) lose more weight compared to those who just reduced overall calories. In the study, the time-restricted eating group ate their meals between noon and 8 p.m., the calorie-tracking group reduced their usual calories by 25%, and the control group ate as usual. After 6 months, the noon to 8 group lost 3.6% more body weight compared to the control group. Weight loss in the calorie group was not statistically significant. If your meds need to be taken with food, talk with your doctor before you try time-restricted eating.
Sugary Drinks Raise Heart Risk
A recent study followed 100,000 adults for 30 years and analyzed data on their diets, activity levels and health issues. Researchers found that those who drank sugar-sweetened beverages more than 2 times a week had a higher risk of heart disease, regardless of how physically active they were. Even the recommended 150 minutes of exercise per week was not enough to stave off adverse effects. The study also found the risk was even higher when sugary drinks were consumed daily. Artificially sweetened beverages were not associated with increased risk of heart disease.
