Using Amma Therapy bodywork and wholistic nutrition to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western care, uniting mind, body and spirit.
Friends! I hope you are having a lovely fall. Iβve been quiet here since starting up but I am still teaching baking and nutrition classes. π
Iβve created a couple of new baking classes that will help you feel cozy this fall. βPerfect Sconesβ will help you master the unique texture of scones - both crisp and soft & buttery. Iβve got a few tricks up my sleeve for this delightful treat.
Join me at on Wed 11/6 to taste and talk all about scones. Youβll go home with dough to bake the next day and a packet of info and recipes.
And check out my website for my other classes this fall, updates about Romoβs Sourdough and other ways we can connect. Hope to see you soon!
Hey friends! Iβve got another update for ya!
Iβve started a micro-bakery and will finally be selling my sourdough bread (and eventually other goodies)! Iβm calling it βRomoβsβ, after my dad.
Every week Iβll be posting whatβs on the menu. You can pre-order a loaf (and pay via Venmo) and pickup will be on Saturdays in Oregon City at 500 Abernathy Rd.
This is a work in progress, as many things are when they first start out. I donβt have everything completely figured out, but Iβm going for it anyway!
Happy summer friends!
Hi friends. Itβs been a year (!) since Iβve connected here, and I thought it was time for an update.
Since announcing my pause on practicing Amma Therapy last year, Iβve taken the much needed time and space to rest and reflect. What Iβve discovered is that Iβm not ready to return to my Amma practice.
Instead, Iβm leaning into teaching. It feels regenerative to connect with folks about food - cooking and baking together, enjoying and sharing stories centered around something we all love.
And so thatβs where Iβm focusing my energy this year. Iβll be a little more active here, sharing about upcoming classes, places and foods I love to eat, recipes that are nourishing & delicious and perhaps a little Chinese Medicine wisdom too. π
Thanks for being here. β¨
Hi friend. It's been awhile.
β β β β β β β β β
It's finally spring. Can you feel the new energy and excitement in the air? I love the change of seasons; it feels like a fresh start. It's an opportunity for us to reflect on past seasons, reconnect to our desires and recommit to making the conscious changes to best support us in reaching our goals.
β β β β β β β β β
With that in mind, I have some news to share with you about making difficult choices to make space for growth and change.
β β β β β β β β β
I endeavor to keep my personal life (mostly) separate from my business persona (in the name of professionalism), but I experienced a monumental shift in my personal life last fall. The strongest, and most steadfast man I knew, my father, passed away unexpectedly. This has been the most difficult season I've ever endured; the grief and stress have made my emotions and energy unpredictable.
β β β β β β β β β
Over the past six months, I've given myself some time and space to reflect and process. And what I've learned is that to take care of myself, I need to take a pause on some of my commitments to others.
β β β β β β β β β
I'll be pausing my Amma Therapy practice on June 15, 2023. I hope to return to practice in early 2024, but I'm allowing myself some more time to make that decision and to see what possibilities the future holds. It has been a gift to care for you, to connect with you and to share laughs, tears and energy. I truly appreciate the time and trust you've given me and I hope our time together has helped you feel better.
β β β β β β β β β
β β β β β β β β β
β β β β β β β β β
You'll be hearing more from me in the coming months, so please stay in touch. π

Is anyone else excited to watch another season of the Great British Baking Show? I just love seeing the incredible talent & skill, the disasters & successes and what kooky outfit Noel is going to wear next. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
If you're excited for fall baking, but want to expand your knowledge, come learn how to bake sourdough with me this fall. It's so easy! I promise you'll be able to fit it into your schedule. No bread baking experience required!ββββββββ
ββββββββ
I have a few baking sourdough classes on my schedule so far this fall (with a couple more to come!) so head over to the link in bio or my website to sign up!
Finding balance is precarious in any seasonββββββββ
ββββββββ
During the fall we focus on the Metal element and it's correspondences to experience ease, nourish our qi and reconnect to ourselves. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Some of the ways we can embrace the Metal element are through supporting our Lung & Large Intestine energetic meridians, processing our grief, eating white foods (apples, pears, garlic, onions) and staying hydrated.ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Amma Therapy can also help you find ease and balance this season. I offer a free 30 minute consultation to chat about your health concerns and to see if Amma would be beneficial for you. (And if you aren't making health changes, Amma is super relaxing!) Link in bio.ββββββββ

Take care friend.

Sunday, Oct. 2 at
π Ahhhh, welcome Autumn. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
There are so many lovely things about this season - crisp nights, butternut squash soup, sweaters, warm spiced cider and hopefully the opportunity to slow down and turn inward. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Fall is the season for enjoying the harvest and preparing for winter. In Chinese Medicine, it's the season of the Metal element, which is all about structure, organization and communication. Take this season to bring order to your home, to bring some structure to your days and to ask for what you need. These small (ok, maybe big) practices will prepare you for a restful and rejuvenating winter.ββββββββ
ββββββββ
This fall I'll be re-organizing my pantry, re-igniting my yoga practice and starting a blog (stay tuned!). These are all things I'm excited to do, but I know will also support me during the winter. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
What are you excited to do for yourself this fall? π
It's pumpkin season! It's time for soup! Use some spices!ββββββββ
ββββββββ
All of these ππ» are especially supportive for the Earth element and super beneficial for you to eat this season. The Earth element thrives on a variety of warm, cooked foods, and because it's responsible for digestion, we want to keep that digestive fire stoked so it can process food and turn it into Qi; having coldness your digestive system makes this process much more difficult.ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Cold raw food creates dampness, which interferes with the body's ability to transport and transform nutrients and energy, which produce Qi and Blood. For most of the year, but especially during Earth season, itβs best to avoid cold or chilled beverages; too many cold drinks (and/or foods) means the body will take time to warm up the food before it gets digested, thus causing the body to expend more energy warming the food/drinks up instead of using that energy to simply digest. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
So, in addition to eating pumpkins, soup and spices, you can start incorporating foods that are mildly, naturally sweet (not sugary sweet), round and a golden/yellow or orange color. Good examples of Earth element nourishing foods include corn, millet, carrots, chickpeas, winter squash, asian pears, yellow tomatoes, pumpkins, chicken, sunchokes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, and rice. YUM!ββββββββ
ββββββββ
So many good ones on that list! What are the foods you look forward to eating this season? ββββββββ
ββββββββ
ββββββββ
πΈ
Welcome September! πββββββββ
ββββββββ
It's a new month, and another opportunity to step into alignment with the season. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Nourished by routine, ritual, and time with friends, and especially meals with friends, the Earth element is also nourished by giving. In this season when nature gives her bounty, we also rejoice in giving. A word, a courtesy, a thoughtfulness - given today - is a great gift for another and for yourself. This season, when you focus on what nourishes and fulfills you and those you care about, you will be supporting your Earth element. But be thoughtful of how you can nourish others and not deplete yourself. Remember, it's all about balance. β―οΈββββββββ
ββββββββ
There are so many ways to feel more connected to both nature and yourself. We can do this with physical practices and nutrition. Next month, I'll be co-teaching a class on how to "Align Yourself with the Seasons" where weβll learn all about the Autumn season and Metal element. Link in bio for more information! I would love to see you there. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Until then, enjoy your September friends!ββββββββ
ββββββββ
The spirit of late summer "Yi"ββββββββ
ββββββββ
In Chinese medicine theory, every organ and element βhousesβ a spirit, which corresponds to a certain aspect of our psyche. Our thoughts and mental capacity relate to the spirit of the Earth element, called the Yi (which translates to Intellect). The Yi influences our capacity for studying, concentration, memorizing, awareness, etc.ββββββββ
ββββββββ
All of the information you take in from the outside world, and all of your life experiences, are part of your mental βinformation diet.β Like your physical diet, the quality and nutrition of your mental, emotional and spiritual diet impacts your well-being throughout your entire life span. The energy of the Earth Element within the body, mind and spirit governs how we process information and experience, just as it governs how well we digest our food.ββββββββ
ββββββββ
All of these life experiences impact our emotional well-being, as well as our cognitive ability to think and reason clearly. In other words, conscious thought process is closely tied in with our emotional states, and the physical body.ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Problems of the Yi, the spirit of the Earth element, like problems with thought, concentration, or lack of awareness β are actually problems of mental-emotional-spiritual digestion. You can have obsessive thoughts, projection of responsibility and blame, insomnia, worry, martyrdom, resentment, frustration, anger and mental fatigue. If ongoing, this starts to play out in the body, with chronic muscle spasms, digestive and appetite disturbance, epigastric discomfort, IBS, abdominal pain, bloating, distention, and physical fatigue. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
That is why itβs vital to be intentional about what you consume physically, mentally and spiritually. Of course, we all deal with digestive trouble sometimes, but if you are chronically worrying or feel bloated after every meal, Amma Therapy can help! Send me a DM or sign up for a free consult to find out more.
One of the ways we can best support our Earth element is with simple nutrition and nourishing habits. Here are some simple tips:ββββββββ
ββββββββ
π
During late summer, enjoy the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. Taste and experience their differences. Carrots are crisp, cucumbers cool, tomatoes luscious, peaches sweet. YUM! ββββββββ
ββββββββ
π½ Avoid complicated dishes. Food can be prepared simply with a minimum or seasonings and ingredients. Use moderation in cooking time, amount of water or oil used, and cooking temperature. It benefits our Earth element to eat warm, cooked food, but we want to taste that freshness too!ββββββββ
ββββββββ
π₯ Chewing your food thoroughly reduces the workload for your digestive system and food gets absorbed more easily. This also allows a longer time for your meals, letting you realize the feeling of fullness and prevent overeating.ββββββββ
ββββββββ
π₯¬ And most importantly - share food during this season with community and loved ones! Eat outside when you can and give thanks for the abundance you receive. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
In this season of late summer, the Earth element is what we focus on to support and strengthen. Each element has specific characteristics and βcontrolsβ specific processes and parts of the body. It is within these characteristics that we can nourish this element and also look for imbalances. For the Earth element these are:ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Energetic Channels: Spleen & Stomachββββββββ
Sound: Singingββββββββ
Odor: Fragrant - like a baby, sometimes described as βsickly sweetβββββββββ
Color: Golden yellowββββββββ
Emotion: Worryββββββββ
Climate: Dampββββββββ
Season: Late Summerββββββββ
Sense Organ: Mouthββββββββ
Taste: Sweetββββββββ
Tissues: Musclesββββββββ
Virtue: Integrityββββββββ
Spirit: Yi - intellect, memory, awarenessββββββββ
ββββββββ
Earth energy enables us to nurture ourselves as well as those in need. The Earth element is closely associated with the archetype of the Mother, or Mother Earth. It is the mother who feeds and sustains us.The Earth element is often a βhelperβ or works in a caring profession. (Hi, it me! πββοΈ)ββββββββ
ββββββββ
It is very easy to spot an imbalance in the Earth element. Because this element controls digestion, it is often one of the first places we see imbalance in people. Other signs of imbalance could be: physical fatigue, mental fatigue, worry, digestive problems, and muscle weakness. Because this elementβs impact on digestion, food therapy becomes so important to keep everything on track. (In Chinese Medicine, our diets play a big role in the harmony and balance of our physical, mental and spiritual health.)ββββββββ
ββββββββ
During this season I'll be sharing some ideas for supporting your Earth element with food therapy and lifestyle practices. We'll be focusing on grounding, balance, and self-care.ββββββββ
ββββββββ
What do you do to get and stay grounded?
Happy International Dog Day! πββββββββ
ββββββββ
Ok, so this is a silly holiday, but it gives me an opportunity to introduce you to my best furry friend, Atlas. He's good boy (mostly) and loves people. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
As an Earth element (and Amma Therapist), I focus my energy on caring for and nourishing others. To stay balanced, I also have to care for myself. A way that I give myself time for self-care (vital for the Earth element) is during my walks with Atlas. Every morning we walk and I listen to the birds, enjoy the fresh air and have space for walking meditation or contemplation. Sometimes during a stressful day I take him out to give myself a break! It's always win-win for both of us! ππ»ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Time for transition ββββββββ
ββββββββ
The Earth element and season is a stabilizing force during times of transition, because it is all about nourishment, grounding and caring, both for ourselves and others. After all the activity of spring and summer, natureβs time to grow and bloom, Earth can help us get centered and balanced as we organize ourselves for the autumn harvest and begin to prepare ourselves for winter, the season of rest.ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Earth is unique among the five elements in that it corresponds to two unusual time periods. First, itβs related to the short season called βlate summer,β those last warm, light-filled days, just before the cool weather sets in. Second, the Earth element is linked to times of change throughout the year: those few weeks between seasons in which autumn changes to winter, winter to spring and spring to summer.ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Our Earth element fosters clear thoughts and a capacity to create a peaceful atmosphere in both our inner and outer world. This element rules our digestion in the physical and mental sense, so now is the time to (re)consider what you might be ingesting and how that nourishes you (or doesnβt). ββββββββ
ββββββββ
In general, finding stability without stagnation is an effective way to support the Earth element. Endeavor to find a balance between giving and receiving. Reflect on these questions, through journaling or talking with a friend: ββββββββ
ββββββββ
βWhat do I need?β ββββββββ
βHow do I nourish myself?βββββββββ
"How can I support others while also supporting myself?"ββββββββ
ββββββββ
We are in a time of transition (in so many more ways than seasonally), so allow yourself the space to contemplate and be intentional with your energy and time. This will be wonderfully nourishing for your Earth element.
A time for reflection
β β β β β β β β β
As the summer winds down and we transition into fall, we have an opportunity to reflect on the season and prepare for the one ahead. Journaling is an opportunity to reconnect with yourself and your needs.
β β β β β β β β β
Here are some journal prompts for the transitional late summer season:
β β β β β β β β β
~ Who and what helps me come home to myself (to get centered and re-aligned)?
~ What are some things you associate with the end of summer and beginning of fall? How is this transitional time different from other times of year for you?
~ Who sees me, and what are they reflecting back to me?
~ Reflect on the balance in your life; be gentle and don't compare yourself to others. Are there areas where you feel well-balanced and others that could use some adjustments?
β β β β β β β β β
For more ideas to support your transition through the seasons, I'm offering a workshop on Sunday 8/21: "Align yourself with the seasons". We'll be talking about late summer energy and how to use diet and lifestyle habits to nourish our body, minds and spirits! Link in bio for more info. I'd love to have you join us!

Summer can be a season for resting too.ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Some of us fill our summer days with projects, trips and events, while others use the time to rest and relax. There's so much energy moving in summer that we can sometimes forget to simply be in the moment.ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Here's an opportunity to rest, breathe and be in the moment. In two weeks, I'll be co-teaching a class in my "Align yourself with the seasons" series, focusing on the Earth element, Spleen & Stomach energetic meridians and late summer season. I'll give a short talk on how you can support and nourish your body during this particular season and then my friend Roe, .moment will lead a gentle and complementary yin yoga class.ββββββββ
ββββββββ
I am so excited to be offering this at in Portland and we would love to have you join us on Sunday, 8/21 at 11am! Link in bio for more info & sign up! ββββββββ
ββββββββ
What brings you joy?
β β β β β β β β β
In Chinese Medicine, every element (and meridian pair) have an associated emotion - for the Fire element, it's joy.
β β β β β β β β β
If youβve ever interacted with (actual) fire, you know from experience that its natural tendency is to spread to anything combustible. The directionality of Fire is outward, and the emotion of joy is one in which we are outward, spreading. Think about someone joyfully playing in a field - you can probably imagine them with their arms spread out wide and the lips spread wide in a smile. Joy is an emotion that leads us to move outwards. When in balance, Joy is a beautiful expression of our emotional body-mind. It brings us into connection with others and helps us celebrate life.
β β β β β β β β β
During the summer, spend some time doing what bring you joy and you'll be nourishing your Fire element.
β β β β β β β β β
Is there anything sweeter than a sun-warmed berry picked right off the vine?
β β β β β β β β β
Support your Fire element with red berries this summer! Not only are they delicious, but they also nourish the Blood and Qi. Red is the color of the Fire element and red foods benefit the energetic channels associated with this element - Heart, Small Intestine, Pericardium and Triple Heater.
β β β β β β β β β
Adding raspberries, boysenberries, huckleberries, even the dark purple blackberries and marionberries (my favorite!) are a small way you can align yourself with the summer season to support you body energetically (and nutritionally!). These berries are in season now, so get them as often as you can.
β β β β β β β β β
I like my right off the vine, but Iβve also been know to muddle them up into a beverage (both with booze and without π).
β β β β β β β β β
Whatβs your favorite berry and way to eat them? Let me know! π

Memorial Day Musings πΊπΈ
β β β β β β β β β
Today is a day where we remember and honor our fallen heroes - those military persons who died while serving this country in the armed forces. I think we should also give thanks and respect to their families, who have also sacrificed for this country. I am eternally grateful for the sacrifice these service-people have made, so that I may live in this democratic country as a free person with agency and voice. βοΈ
β β β β β β β β β
One of the things I remember when I think about our armed forces is their dedication to community, to others. They sacrifice their time, energy and sometimes lives, so that the rest of us can forget what it means to truly be an American.
β β β β β β β β β
What does it mean to you, to be an American?
β β β β β β β β β
The unofficial Navy motto is "non sibi sed patriae", which translates to "not self but country". For me, this country includes all the children in Uvalde (and Columbine and Sandy Hook), grocery shoppers in Buffalo, nail technicians in Atlanta, churchgoers in Charleston, club-goers in Orlando and concert attendees in Las Vegas (and many more). π
β β β β β β β β β
So today, when we remember and honor our fallen heroes, let's not forget these Americans, who gave their lives so that we can continue to fight among ourselves. This country is desperate for reform, but denies the responsibility it requires to make actual change.
β β β β β β β β β
I wonder if it's "we the people", that needs to change?
β β β β β β β β β
I propose we start this summer by making the change within ourselves. Let's start looking out for and after each other, caring for our neighbors and those in our communities. Let's start some real discussion, and let it be uncomfortable, recognizing that change takes time, patience and dedication.
β β β β β β β β β
We the people can make this country a welcoming and safe place for all, as it was meant to be. And for me, that's what it means to truly be an American. πΊπΈ
What kind of movement feels joyful to you?
β β β β β β β β β
For me, it's dancing. You'd never really know it though, because I pretty much only like it when I'm alone (and Drake is playing.) π
β β β β β β β β β
The thing about dancing is that it's joyful full-body movement, which is so good for the Liver Qi. The Liver controls our ligaments and tendons - the tissues that hold us together. π
β β β β β β β β β
When the Liver is in dis-harmony, we see tightness and tension. Remember the Liver controls the smooth flow of Qi, Blood and fluids, so if itβs congested, that flow isnβt happening and our body isnβt getting lubricated; we become stiff, dry and inflexible, which is the opposite of a tree (or, in TCM, the Wood element). π³
β β β β β β β β β
The best way to nourish our sinews is with movement; we have the amazing ability to move in so many different ways. So full body movement like dancing, swimming, yoga, tai chi, Feldenkrais, or jumping rope utilize the entire body, moving all of our energy. On the days you donβt feel up to much movement, light stretching is great too! πββοΈ
β β β β β β β β β
What are some of the ways you love to move your body? Let me know in the comments! ππ»
β β β β β β β β β
Thanks February. π
β β β β β β β β β
It's nearly a new month, and a new season. With winter winding down, we have a few more days to nourish our deep well of energy. So before you start taking action on all of your Spring plans, spend some time contemplating how you'd like to feel and what energy you'd like to bring into this new month and season.
β β β β β β β β β
Some journaling prompts for you:
β β β β β β β β β
How do I want to feel next month?..
What can I release?..
I feel most energized whenβ¦..
What matters most in my life?
β¦
β β β β β β β β β
I hope you've had a restful Winter and are ready for a radiant Spring. π±
β β β β β β β β β
Sometimes February can feel like the longest month of the year. Whether blisteringly cold and icy or deceivingly chilly but sunny, itβs still winter for another six weeks.
β β β β β β β β β
If it hasnβt been a restful season for you yet, thereβs still time to reset. Take this season (until the spring equinox) to nourish yourself with the hibernation that our bodies, minds and spirit long for in winter.
β β β β β β β β β
A few small ways to support your Water element, Kidney & Bladder energy:
β β β β β β β β β
~ rest often. take a nap and go to bed early
~ eat simply, mostly warm & cooked foods
~ reflect inward with meditation, breath work or journaling
~ keep your body warm, especially your feet
~ incorporatw gentle physical activity like qi-gong, yin yoga or walking into your routine
~ solitude can be beneficial but make time for community and connection too
β β β β β β β β β
β β β β β β β β β
If you are looking for hands-on help with your energy or health, an Amma session would be a fantastic way to nourish yourself this winter. I offer individualized guidance specific to your needs.
β β β β β β β β β
Wishing you peace and rest. β¨
