Scam Alert!

There is a new and very convincing scam going around. I received it this morning in my email.
The email comes from [email protected] which is PayPal's legitimate email service. The email states that a service (in my case Trust Wallet) is billing you for a large amount of money. It has a "Seller Note to customer" section where the scammer can send you a note. In the note it will give you a phone number you can call to "dispute" the charge. When you call that number, they will lie to you and attempt to con you out of money.

DO NOT CALL THE NUMBER!

I called the number to verify my suspicions before posting about it here. I found that they are posing as PayPal support, but the number was provided by the seller, not PayPal. I was able to verify that he is definitely a scammer and not a PayPal employee.

If you own a PayPal account, do NOT click on any link in the Email. Instead, go to PayPal.com, scroll down to the bottom and click "Contact". Scroll down and click "Call Us" or "Message Us". It will have you sign in to your PayPal account. By going directly to paypal.com, you know you are speaking with the real PayPal support and can verify that the invoice will not affect your account.

The email will look something like this:

Dr. Joseph Kerwin has served the people of this community generously for as long as I can remember (I became an Oregonian in 1991). His memory and legacy to this city of ours will endure.

I do believe Dr. Bares and his staff will do a great service to the community as well. They are very good and caring individuals, honest in their business practices, and exceptional in the care of your teeth as well!

We’re very excited to let you know about the changes that are occurring in our practice, mainly because those changes are going to be so positive for you, our patients.

It has been a difficult journey since we lost Dr. Kerwin. We’d like to thank you for your loyalty and trust for the past 38 years and for your prayers and support as we grieve.

Dr. Kerwin so loved his work. He was committed to providing high-quality dental care while making it affordable, and we want nothing more than to continue to deliver on that commitment.

Fortunately, we’ve found a partner to help us do that: Dr. Scott Bares. You may already know of Dr. Bares because he’s providing excellent care to patients at Freeport Dental and Forreston Dental. Dr. Bares is from our region (he lived in Oregon) and his community-focused approach fits with our vision and practices. His staff has helped us remain fully operational, and he and his wife, Kelly, have been extremely helpful during a difficult time.

You may have heard that there has been a “takeover by a big corporation,” mass firings and other drastic changes at our office, but this is simply untrue. We still own the practice, though we will be transitioning to ownership by the Bares at some point. Scott and Kelly are the sole owners of their practices; We like them and work with them because they’re patient-focused hometown dental providers like us.

Now we come to the most important question: What does this mean for you? If you’ve received communication telling you your appointment has been canceled, you need to “reestablish” or that any other change has occurred with your care, that information is inaccurate. We’re continuing to serve the community just as we did before. Your appointment remains in place, and you’ll receive the best care available.

If you have any questions, we are happy to answer them. Just call 815-732-6911.

It’s been our privilege to serve you and watch your families grow, and we look forward to continuing to give you our best. Thank you again for your support.

Relax at the Pines… knowing that YOU assisted Chief Black Hawk standing tall once again!
Book and stay in one of our landmark status cozy cabins thru July 1st 2018 and White Pines Resort will donate $50 per night toward the restoration of the Blackhawk Statue!

Join White Pines Resort and owner Elizabeth George, who has been actively involved since 2009 in the campaign to save this iconic historic landmark statue honoring Native Americans. Repairs stalled and money ran out in the past couple years and it looked like hope was lost.
But the Oregon community wasn't going to stand for that and has come together with a new surge of energy and enthusiasm. State Representative Tom Demmer took up the cause and was the chief co-sponsor of a bill that just passed granting $350,000 toward the restoration of the Blackhawk statue as part of the capital budget which takes effect July 1.

White Pines Resort is going to do their part by donating $50 from every cabin reserved now through June 30th. Cabin bookings must be for the month of June (applies only to NEW bookings). Nightly rates are just $124 Sunday - Thursday and $134 on Friday & Saturdays. In addition, the 2 night minimum on weekends will be waived for the same time period.

You can literally play a big part in helping save our treasured Blackhawk statue-- while enjoying a night in a cozy cabin with a campfire, surrounded by the serene and peaceful forest that our Native American ancestors once lived!

Reservations must be called in for this offer 815-946-2400 (offer not valid with online bookings). Reservation desk is open 8am to 8pm daily.
Please consider joining us in restoring one of the most important iconic representations of Native American culture in the Midwest!
