🎄 Many of you will add a Christmas puppy to your family this year! 🎄

Make sure you get off to a good start by doing your puppy behavior homework so come spring, you don’t have a massive behavioral issue on your hands! Make sure to include the following in your puppy training checklist:

1. Knock/Ring the door bell every day and immediately tell that puppy to sit/stay in a designated spot or “go to your place” etc. — soon pup will go to that spot automatically and wait quietly.

2. While you enjoy playtime with your puppy, have a device playing loud fireworks, thunder, heavy rain, etc to help puppy familiarize themselves with those sounds. Don’t wait till the 4th of July to find out your dog is terrified of fireworks! You know what they say about an ounce of prevention!

3. Socialize, socialize, socialize! Walk your pup daily and allow them to see and be seen by the world. They do not (and should not) need to stop and greet every last dog or person they meet along the way. Just meet and greet enough to teach pup how to do it politely, but pup should also learn to politely walk past others without looking to interact every time.

We've had a gorgeous fall this year! Winter is well on its way, if you've put in a lot of work with training and socializing your pup, don't let it all go to waste! Winter time tends to be the regression season because we drastically decrease or flat out stop taking our dogs out. It's an even bigger issue with puppies or "Christmas puppies." remember, those first 12 weeks of life are the most important for training and socialization.

We had such a great bunch of dogs come out to socialize tonight!

Combined with appropriate training and socialization, chew toy feeding can tremendously help prevent or treat your pup's behavioral challenges.

(KONG brand toys in particular are top-rack dishwasher safe too if that helps! lol)

To guarantee a calm and stress-free life with your dog, get the socialization part right at the very beginning!

This handsome boy and his mom came by today for his second class with me.

His name is Ruzzo, he’s the cutest little Doberman pup and he’s coming to see me cause he’s had a bit of a ruff start to life and has been struggling with shyness and reactivity as a result.

We made some great progress today! He faced some common triggers and was able to overcome them all. He also was able to walk nicely without pulling through it all, how amazing is he?? At the end of his lesson he greeted some complete strangers and though shy about it, he did offer some sniffs to them. Soon he’ll be giving everybody kisses! Just gotta keep at it! Go Ruzzo!!! 🦴 🐶

For those spicy pups, "The Cautious Canine" is a phenomenal guide to help dogs conquer their fears. (Dr. Patricia McConnell, PhD)

"Family Friendly Dog Training" is Dr. McConnel's guide to training your family dog and is laid out as a 6-week program for you to follow along. (Dr. Patricia McConnell, PhD)

"How Dogs Learn" is worth its word count in gold. I read this one back when I was in dog training school, highly recommended to anyone and everyone that has absolutely anything to do with dogs on the day-to-day. It takes the reader from the history of animal training all the way to how to teach a dog new concepts and much more. (Dr. Mary R Burch, PhD, Dr. John S Bailey, PhD)

"When Pigs Fly, Training Success With Impossible Dogs" is a fantastic book that helps train the kind of dog we might be tempted to label "stubborn." It's a clicker training guide, clickers are tools that trainers either love or hate, but this author shows up with receipts! (Jane Killion)

Handsome rescue boys! Timo(left) and Tazman(right). These two are currently in a foster home in Orem, UT through Rescue Rovers Dog Adoptions. They are patiently waiting for their forever people to come along and I just wanted to share this adorable photo, cause just look how cute!

The time I was lucky enough to help raise 4 Akita rescue puppies! They came to us at a very young age so we got them with a foster mama dog who was fantastic with them and the (human) foster mom and I worked with these puppies every day to make sure they grew to be polite and well-rounded members of society. Once they were ready, we found the perfect families for all of them and though I miss them terribly, I'm happy to know they are all out there living happy, adventure-filled lives with their people!

Meet Wylie! He's the sweetest boy and I want to shine the spotlight on him today because he's been such an amazing helper to me along with his sister Espie, but she deserves her own post.

Wylie is a sweet boy with a no-nonsense attitude and has been helpful on many occasions with behavior evals and socialization. His hobbies include being his mom's shadow and howling when her phone rings, otherwise how would she know?
