We are dedicated to amplifying the voices of our therapists, showcasing our unwavering advocacy and support for the LGBTQIA2s+ community.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to our therapists who show daily dedication to our clients, even as they face their own challenges of discrimination and fear.

‼️MORE PEOPLE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THIS! ‼️

Normalizing the presence of therapists with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is an important step towards reducing stigma & promoting a more inclusive understanding of mental health. Here are a few points to consider:

1. Professional Competence: Having a mental health condition does not inherently impair a therapist’s ability to provide effective care. Therapists with BPD can be highly competent & bring valuable personal insights & empathy to their practice.

2. Stigma Reduction: Openly acknowledging that therapists can have BPD helps challenge stereotypes & reduce stigma. It shows that people with BPD can lead fulfilling, professional lives.

3. Lived Experience: Therapists with BPD can offer a unique perspective & understanding of the condition, which can be beneficial in treating clients with similar experiences. Their lived experience can enhance their therapeutic rapport & effectiveness.

4. Support and Supervision: Like any professional, therapists with BPD benefit from proper support, supervision, & self-care practices to manage their condition & maintain their well-being.

5. Education and Awareness: Increasing awareness about BPD & its impact can foster a more accepting & supportive environment within the mental health community & society at large.

6. Diverse Representation: Having therapists with BPD represents a broader spectrum of mental health experiences & can inspire hope & resilience in clients who may feel understood & validated.

By addressing these points, we can move towards a more inclusive & compassionate view of mental health professionals with BPD.

May, recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, is dedicated to raising awareness about behavioral health issues and reducing the associated stigma. It also emphasizes the impact that mental illness and addiction can have on our clients and their families, our own staff/therapists, and society as a whole.

Let’s work together to fight the stigma surrounding mood disorders and start normalizing our differences. By openly discussing mental health and acknowledging that everyone experiences challenges differently, we can create a more accepting and supportive environment. Remember, understanding and empathy go a long way in helping those with mood disorders feel seen and valued.

Hi folx, meet one of our new therapists Amy Brown (she/her). She is currently in her second year of UVU’s MSW program, and is thrilled to be pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming a social worker.
From a young age, Amy had a deep desire to make a positive impact on others’ lives through social work, yet self-doubt held her back. Because of societal norms and expectations, she struggled to embrace her true self. However, through her journey of self-discovery and exploration of these societal norms, she’s gradually shed those inhibitions and grown more comfortable in her own skin. This process has not only empowered Amy personally but has also deepened her understanding and empathy for others navigating similar challenges.

With a foundation in understanding, empathy, and unconditional positive regard, Amy strives to create a safe space where clients can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences freely. She believe in the inherent worth and potential of each individual and her approach is rooted in fostering a collaborative therapeutic relationship. She is here to accompany you on your journey towards self-awareness, growth, and healing!

In her free time, ahe enjoys hiking, walking, reading fantasy books, listening to podcasts, such as Armchair Expert, eating chocolate,
laughing, and engaging in deep conversations. She was raised in Utah within the predominant religion but have since moved away from that affiliation. She has been married to her husband for twelve years, and together they have three boys and a dog who are all full of chaotic energy and love. They enjoy camping, being silly, and having snuggle parties with popcorn.

Katie (she/her) is in her final year of the master’s program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Southern New Hampshire University. She is passionate about supporting LGBTQ+ individuals and is excited to begin that work in a counseling role.
Katie has been a longtime volunteer at Encircle and a facilitator for the youth friendship circle. She has completed an externship in Emotionally Focused Therapy focused on LGBTQ+ clients and levels 1 and 2 in Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy.

In her free time Katie loves to knit, make sourdough bread, and mess around with her dog and kitten. She loves spending time with her family - going on a good hike or eating sushi. Formal religion used to be important to Katie, having moved away from that, she now focuses on spirituality and love.

Our first event at Valley High School was an absolute blast! At Flourish, we cherish the opportunity to connect with different communities, and our time at Valley HS was truly special.

Meeting the incredible students, staff, and school counselors was so heartwarming. The school is passionate about providing support, especially to the young students navigating their LGBTQIA+ identities. It’s crucial that they have mental health support to understand and respect their journey as they come into their own.

Valley’s devoted teachers impressed us with their dedication to prioritizing a resource fair. This alternative school understands that students, for various reasons, face challenges in traditional school settings. Valley offers a supportive environment and countless resources, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive academically and emotionally. They were so understanding that every student requires a different way of learning. It opened our eyes to just how much students can struggle if they aren’t in the right environment.

Thank you so much for having us last month! We are so happy we were able to chat with so many students and parents about what we do here at Flourish and hope that the families know they are not alone.

TW: politics, discrimination, transphobia, slurs

Thank you to our Social Work Students for putting together a peaceful protest on Monday. Our transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse community deserves to attend a school free from discrimination and fear.

As soocial worker we have a duty with the transgender community involving providing support, advocacy, and resources. Social workers in this field aim to address the unique challenges faced by transgender individuals, such as discrimination, stigma, access to healthcare, mental health support, legal issues, and social acceptance. We work towards promoting inclusivity, affirming gender identities, providing counseling and support services, advocating for policy changes to protect transgender rights, and fostering environments that are safe and supportive for transgender individuals to thrive.

We are so excited to announce some of our speakers for the Southern Idaho Transgender Affirming Care Resource Fair! 🥳 Lisa Hansen is the clinical director and founder of Flourish Therapy Inc , a wonderful organization specializing in mental health care for the LGBTQ communities and thier families. We are so excited to also have a booth for Flourish in attendance for the local community to gain resources! Lisa will be speaking at 1:30pm, You won't want to miss her valuable insights!

A bit about Lisa:
Lisa Tensmeyer Hansen is the clinical director and founder of Flourish Therapy, Inc., (Flourish), a behavioral health clinic located in Provo, Utah, which she founded in February 2017 to meet the needs of LGBTQ+ and SSA individuals and their families. Lisa received a B.S. from Brigham Young University in 1990 as university valedictorian (Summa Cum Laude with Honors thesis), an M.S. in 2012 and Ph.D. in 2017, both at BYU, focusing on improving the mental health of LGBTQ+ people in conservative family and community.
As part of her graduate programs at BYU, she taught a course on the family proclamation and a course in graduate research and writing. Her dissertation was a quantitative analysis of adolescent emotional self-regulation in 600 families from Seattle and Provo. Her master’s thesis on a preliminary aspect of the dissertation won the national 2013 AAMFT Masters Thesis of the Year Award.

Since 2010 Lisa Hansen has seen clients at the BYU Comprehensive Clinic, the Provo Center for Couples and Families (PCCF), and at Flourish. In 2016, she was invited to be a continuing participant in the Reconciliation and Growth Project, a dialogue group of conservative and liberal therapists and academics forging ideas to bridge divides and educate in various forums in the LGBTQ+/SSA therapeutic community. In 2018, Dr. Hansen won the Outstanding Counseling Supervisor of the Year award from the University of Utah and in 2019, she was awarded Ally of the Year award from the LGBTQ+ organization, Affirmation International.

Lisa Hansen’s interest in the well-being of LGBTQ+ and SSA people is informed by her LDS faith. She was recently released as a member of the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, and she and her husband are the composers of the Primary Children’s song, Nephi’s Courage.

Dr. Hansen has given more than 100 community presentations, articles, and podcasts for universities, clinical mental health organizations, community mental health agencies, school districts and conferences. She lives with her husband in Payson, Utah, where together they made a home for 7 children (and a few extras) and now have 18 grandchildren.

One of our clients gave us permission to share this powerful poem they wrote about their experience being trans. We want all of our trans, NB and gender-diverse clients, friends, family and community members to know that we see you. We stand with you. We are your accomplices and will fight to keep you safe. We are not free until we are all free, on this day and everyday.

“Easter happens to fall on Trans Day of Visibility this year. And I’ve been thinking how invisible I really feel sometimes especially to the people who should matter most.”

We’ve secured a downtown location for client meetings via a discounted space arrangement with . Some therapists are using this space to address client needs and cut our waitlist. Happy International Transgender Day of Visibility!

This annual occasion celebrates gender diversity and pride, highlighting the varied experiences within the transgender community. It’s crucial to recognize that not everyone feels safe being visible, and that’s okay. Your identity remains valid regardless of whether you choose to share it openly.

To our allies: Your support is needed now more than ever. Let’s stand together to create safer spaces for our transgender friends, colleagues, and family members. Listen to their experiences, offer your support, and show up for them every day of the year.

Nich (They/Them) identifies as Non-Binary and is currently finishing a degree in Marriage and Family Therapy through Syracuse University’s online program. As someone who was not in a space to explore their gender and sexuality until later in life, they want to provide the space that they never had to those in their youth. There is nothing more important than discovering who you are and living who you are, especially in the face of oppression and conformity. They live with their wife and two kids. Originally from a small town in Indiana they have lived in the Philly area and Seattle area before moving to Utah. They love video games, board games, science fiction, pinochle, sports, and hiking.

Hi folx, meet our therapist Michelle Watkins (she/her). Michelle’s younger sister died by su***de in 2012. Four years later, her brother-in-law died by su***de. While their life stories are different from each other, the resulting pain felt very similar in her body. After years of being easily triggered and overwhelmed—not knowing how to deal with the grief of these events—she finally went to therapy. Through it and its useful tools, she learned to walk with grief.

Her own journey of healing led her to seek out a Marriage and Family Therapy program, as a way to continue her growth and in the hopes of supporting others who deal with grief, trauma and loss. Part of her learning (and unlearning) has been letting go of outside expectations and connecting to her deeper self. This inner work has brought peace, and the energy to show up for others in a meaningful way. She believes that as we prioritize our mental health, everyone around us benefits.

Mochelle has found that in therapy, some of the most important work we can do is concentrate on relationships within the systems in which we live—whether that’s between partners, a parent and child, or other dynamics. It’s powerful when we recognize the roles we play in our systems and take ownership of our affect. “As a therapist, I recognize the importance of creating a safe environment to facilitate the space for both individual and systemic healing.”

Utilizing mental health resources is crucial for maintaining overall well-being. These resources provide support, guidance, and strategies for managing stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. By seeking help from professionals, such as therapists or counselors, individuals can gain insight into their emotions and behaviors, develop coping skills, and improve their quality of life. Additionally, mental health resources offer a safe space for discussing sensitive issues and receiving non-judgmental support. Prioritizing mental health care not only benefits individuals but also promotes healthier communities and workplaces. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Hi everyone! One of our interns is collaborating with and putting on a Free-gender-affirming clothing event!

What: True Threads - a FREE gender-affirming clothing event
When: Saturday, April 13th (~2-6pm)
Where: Under the Umbrella Bookstore
Who: Geared toward the trans community, but not exclusive!

What we wear can be such a validating and helpful tool for self-expression. This event is an opportunity for free access to quality, new/lightly used clothing, binders, accessories, etc. After this pop-up event, the donation bins will be stored with Flourish as portable closets for our clients who may benefit from free access to clothing and other gender-affirming wearable items!

My hope is that this pop-up event includes resources beyond clothing. Under the Umbrella has become such a special hub for resources in our community, and if you know of any q***r/trans-focused organizations that might want to be involved, please let me know!

I am placing donation bins (and flyers) at various locations across the valley:

-Flourish Orem office
-Under the Umbrella bookstore
-3rd location TBD

Please spread the word and encourage your circles to consider donating to True Threads before making a trip to the thrift store :)
