Here at Wasatch Canine Camp, providing safe socialization for all dogs is incredibly important to us. There are many facilities that turn away dogs that need behavioral support around other dogs and people, and it is an important part of our mission to be here for those dogs and their people. We specialize in group socialization, and each and every one of our staff members are trained on how to help the individual needs of the dogs at hand. Many of the dogs that come to us are here because of reactivity or aggression towards dogs or people. We provide a safe place for these dogs to stay and socialize around others.
Upon intake, all dogs undergo an evaluation so we can see what type of support they will need while here with us. Some dogs are happy-go-lucky and playful, some dogs are wall flowers, and some dogs need added help due to reactivity. It's a lot like kids at recess: some kids love to play while other prefer to hang out and read a book. Regardless of how they want to engage with others, they should still be given the opportunity. Every dog here gets into our social groups daily, regardless of behavioral issues they may have. We have many dogs who are out with the group on muzzle, and other dogs who need staff to act as a supportive shadow. We may decide that handling a dog with supportive tools is the best route forward for a number of reasons; which could include ensuring there is a bubble of space maintained so a dog doesn't feel crowded, helping a dog to make better choices when they're interacting with others (like moving away from uncomfortable situations instead of escalating them), helping to manage over-excitedness or reactivity, and more. In these instances, staff members act as a supportive shadow, allowing the dogs to make their own choices and giving feedback on those choices so they can learn how to interact appropriately around the other dogs. The red Border Collie wearing a muzzle is Ruby. Ruby first came in for an evaluation in June or 2022, she was very snappy and reactive to the other dogs and was always trying to correct any high energy behavior she didn't like. Since then Ruby and her mom have been attending socials, as well as doing our private problem solving e-touch program. Ruby has made outstanding progress and today for the first time she played in our Saturday social class. She usually prefers to stick close to her mom and is avoidant of the other dogs. Stories like hers remind us why we do what we do. Why proper dog socialization is so important. Why muzzle training is such a game changer to so many dogs. Why ecollar training can be such a pivotal change in dogs. We are so proud of Ruby and her mom for the progress they have made. On Wednesday our trainers decided to do a pack walk while the weather was nice. We invited staff and clients to join as well. Not all dogs are pictured but we ended up having 35 dogs join us! It was such a great time and everyone had a blast. This is just one of the many awesome adventures we offer here at WCC. The pups on this hike have done a wide range of programs with us from group classes, to behavioral modification. We will be offering a new service here at Wasatch Canine Camp. Slat mill sessions! Currently this will be offered as an add on for daycare and boarding just like other services. The cost for an add on will be $10. Slat mill is great for any and all dogs, it is great way to build confidence, as well as give as giving dogs the freedom to run as fast as they would like. Which is great for high energy dogs and dogs who want a release for conflict on daily life. Unlike a conventional treadmill slat mills are entirely powered by the dog so they can go at their own pace and stop whenever they would like to. Staff will do slow introductions and always supervise dogs while using it. This service will be available as soon as tomorrow for daycare dogs and current boarding dogs.
