Staf dog highlight!

Meet Hades! He belongs to our kennel tech Wilseydee. Hades is currently a 1 (almost 2) year old Anatolian shepherd/mountain cur mix. Although his cute looks may be deceiving, he is quite the rambunctious pup who enjoys chewing on just about anything and everything. He is a high anxiety pup who is terrified of most things, but he learns quickly and loves being taught new tricks. He is an absolute goofball who adores cuddles, going on hikes, and playing with his 3 house mates. You will often find him sleeping in the weirdest possible positions and constantly asking for belly rubs. Hades enjoys meeting new people and happily says hi!

We’ve had quite a few new pups join the WCC family so we will be doing staff dog highlights again!

Meet Bellamy! He belongs to our board and train manager Abi. And yes, he’s named after the character Bellamy in the show the 100. Abi always knew she wanted to train her next dog in french so when she found out the name means “a fine friend” in french she was sold. Bellamy, his mom, and brother came to us from a rural shelter last year. After he was with us for a little while Abi began to work with him off and on. She found him to be a very smart and willing to learn little dude. She decided to adopt him and work towards him being a service dog. He is now a little over a year and a half old and has turned into such an amazing boy. Abi had worked hard with Bellamy to reach big goals. He is already acing service dog training, despite it being taken slow due to his age. He loves to play and has developed an amazing on and off switch with the ability to demo and teach these concepts to clients. He has been worked heavily on free shaping and is great at problem solving behaviors and tricks. He has become Abi’s main demo dog and is always eager to see and work with and teach clients. Abi hopes to compete in sports with him once is a little older. He has been introduced to barnhunt, scent work, dock diving, GRC, weight pull, and rally. He loves the outdoors and has the best zoomies ever. You can often see this cute boy chilling in the lobby or out in socials. We are excited to continue to watch him grow and develop into an amazing dog.

Here at Wasatch Canine Camp, providing safe socialization for all dogs is incredibly important to us. There are many facilities that turn away dogs that need behavioral support around other dogs and people, and it is an important part of our mission to be here for those dogs and their people. We specialize in group socialization, and each and every one of our staff members are trained on how to help the individual needs of the dogs at hand. Many of the dogs that come to us are here because of reactivity or aggression towards dogs or people. We provide a safe place for these dogs to stay and socialize around others.

Upon intake, all dogs undergo an evaluation so we can see what type of support they will need while here with us. Some dogs are happy-go-lucky and playful, some dogs are wall flowers, and some dogs need added help due to reactivity. It's a lot like kids at recess: some kids love to play while other prefer to hang out and read a book. Regardless of how they want to engage with others, they should still be given the opportunity. Every dog here gets into our social groups daily, regardless of behavioral issues they may have. We have many dogs who are out with the group on muzzle, and other dogs who need staff to act as a supportive shadow. We may decide that handling a dog with supportive tools is the best route forward for a number of reasons; which could include ensuring there is a bubble of space maintained so a dog doesn't feel crowded, helping a dog to make better choices when they're interacting with others (like moving away from uncomfortable situations instead of escalating them), helping to manage over-excitedness or reactivity, and more. In these instances, staff members act as a supportive shadow, allowing the dogs to make their own choices and giving feedback on those choices so they can learn how to interact appropriately around the other dogs. These things alone can make a massive difference in the way many dogs feel and interact around each other. We never keep dogs secluded due to behavior. Even the hardest of dogs are still allowed to be out with the support of safety protocols.

Our staff goes through an in-depth training process from day one to ensure they know how to read and support all dogs in our care. They are trained individually on how to handle specific dogs, as each animal has its own needs. Our staff is also well versed in handling dogs who may be aggressive or incredibly nervous with people, giving these dogs the opportunity to thrive as well.

We are always happy to talk to owners and provide any information on the care their dogs receive while with us. We allow scheduled tours, and are happy to provide videos of our evaluation process and the precautions we take to keep everyone safe. To learn more about us, please visit www.wasatchcaninecamp.com. If you have any questions or would like to schedule boarding, daycare, or training with us, feel free to text/call us at 801-735-1978.

One thing we really push for with our board and train programs is getting the dogs outside and working on off-leash skills in everyday environment -- including parks, stores, hiking trails, etc. When we have the time and the weather allows it, we push for fun outings often with multiple dogs. This is how we proof recall skills with many of our e-collar program dogs. Our trainers always love the opportunity to take pups out on adventures and often include their personal dogs as a good example. We have even often done board and train pickup sessions that are hikes! We love being approached by members of the public complimenting how well behaved our adventure pups are! ♥️
