Division 77 Changes:

My county civil division, Division 77, is in the process of being closed down. Effective 11/13/23, Division 77 will close. The cases currently in the division will be randomly reassigned to other divisions in the coming days and weeks. If you have a case currently set for hearing before 11/13, that hearing will go forward. If you are set for hearing on 11/13 or later, we will be working to contact you as to how your case will proceed; that is, which judge, in person vs. virtual, new link, etc… If you are currently trying to get hearing time for a date after 11/13 in Division 77, we will be working on getting you to the new division assignment as soon as possible so you can get properly set. [email protected] with any questions. That email will cease to be monitored on 11/13 as well.

A worthwhile discussion to attend. Magistrate Chalkley brings a wealth of information both as a practitioner and now magistrate.

Mark your calendars for Friday, July 21! The Dispute Resolutions Services department is hosting another virtual event entitled “Life Cycle of a Small Claims Case.” Hosting this discussion will be the Ninth Circuit’s very own Magistrate, Sara Chalkley. This event is open for all to attend, and can be joined by clicking the Zoom link below:

***If you have trouble with the Microsoft Teams link, please immediately contact my division at [email protected] to let us know. We hope to have a solution quickly.

Wepa! 🇵🇷

We’ve got two recipes from Judge Brian Sandor to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month! The first is a traditional side dish found in many Puerto Rican homes: tostones! And for the second, can you think of a better way to end the day than with a nice, refreshing piña colada? As the national drink of Puerto Rico, Judge Sandor couldn’t help but include it! It’s believed to have been invented at the Caribe Hilton in 1954 by Ramón “Monchito” Marrero, who sought to capture the true flavors of Puerto Rico in a cocktail. We hope you enjoy!

Third largest school by population… Michigan State University. Lots of fun at lunchtime today. Loved the early season trash talk. Everyone feels good in August!

On this day in 1967, a legal legend was nominated to the Supreme Court. Thurgood Marshall became the first African American to ever sit on the nation’s highest court.

Shout out to the kind ladies on the bus today for the apple juice and positive vibes. I’m not good with needles but I donate every time I’m eligible. Today was a double donation so I’ve got to wait 16 weeks before I can again. Also a special thanks to the law firm sponsoring and hosting the drive.

Chambers “I Voted” selfie! You have until 7pm. If you’re in line at 7pm you are good to go!

Pathways to the Bench was a resounding success. Hispanic Bar Association of Central Florida partnering with both the Hillsborough and Broward chapters made for one grand fiesta of Hispanic Judges sharing knowledge. Honored to participate on the panel this time.

Rushing Pi Kappa Phi-Central Florida in the fall of 2003 will always be one of the best decisions of my life. The bonds formed, the lessons learned, and the maturity gained, set me on a path for success. Almost 20 years later I’m still active as President of the Alumni Association and Ritual Chair. My best friends to this day are also my brothers. Thank you so much to Pi Kappa Phi nationals for this recognition and honor. I promise to continue serving our community with the highest standards.

While I may not look all that good…. I am having a great time learning and seeing so many friends and colleagues.

This week, our county judges are attending an annual education conference held by the Conference of County Court Judges of Florida. This yearly event provides a great opportunity for our judges to continue their judicial education, as well as network with other county judges from across the state. Take a look below to see a group of our judges enjoying the conference!

“I am apt to believe that [Independence Day] will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” - John Adams in a letter to his wife.

Noche de San Juan, learning about how the Puerto Rican Bar Association and its pro bono legal services clinic can help ALL members of our community with various legal issues. Thank you to Tony Suarez for the invitation. It was great being able to speak with someone who knew my Abuelo as a man, an attorney, and a community leader. Talking about him never gets old.
