While impaired driving is a significant danger on the road year-round, the St. Patrick’s Day holiday period is particularly deadly.

The Facts - According to the NHTSA

272 lives were lost in drunk-driving crashes during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday period (6:00 p.m. March 16 to 5:59 a.m. March 18) between 2017 and 2021.

Over the 2021 St. Patrick’s Day holiday period, 47 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes.

Year after year, the rate of impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes is higher at night on St. Patrick’s Day.

In 2021, 41 of the 47 traffic fatalities involving an impaired driver during the holiday period occurred in the nighttime hours (6:00 p.m. to 5:59 a.m.). Still, 31 daytime fatalities in drunk-driving crashes occurred between 2017 and 2021 over the St. Patrick’s Day holiday period.

NovoaGlobal installed a railroad camera on behalf of Brightline in the area of South Harbor City Boulevard and W.H. Jackson Street in Melbourne, FL to change driver behavior after multiple fatalities at the railroad crossing. The specific location is the 1200 Blk WH Jackson St railroad crossing westbound.

Brightline contracted to install NovoaGlobal's railroad monitoring system to alert drivers to the dangers of ignoring warnings at railroad crossings, putting themselves and others at risk. According to WKMG-TV, If the ringing bells, lights, and horns don’t get a driver’s attention, Brightline hopes constant camera monitoring will.

The new system will capture when drivers are going around lowered crossing arms. Brightline originally contracted with NovoaGlobal to install the cameras in South Florida after seeing drivers constantly breaking the law.

The cameras are up and running, and drivers will be notified with a warning letter if they drive through a crossing when a train is coming.
