Do you know the difference between daylight and civil twilight?

After sunset, civil twilight is that time when the sun dips just below the horizon, and the sky still holds onto its glow. For pilots, it’s not just a pretty sky—it’s also a period when navigation lights need to be turned on and once civil twilight ends, night flight hours can then be logged. Any flight time logged between evening civil twilight and morning civil twilight can count as night hours, which are essential for meeting specific flight requirements. As a general rule, evening civil twilight ends roughly 20-35 minutes after sunset, and morning civil twilight begins similarly before sunrise.

Next time you’re up in the air, pay attention to that transition—it’s more than just a pretty view.

Our Diamond DA50RG, flown by instructor Ethan, made a special pitstop at this iconic aviation site. Established in 1928, FFA commemorates the site where Orville and Wilbur Wright made their first powered flight on December 17, 1903. With its single 3,000-foot runway and proximity to the Wright Brothers National Memorial, it’s a fun airport to fly into.
