Made With Envy

In a growth-obsessed industry, we’ve been committed to staying the right size as a consultancy. Small teams, minimal overhead, and an unwavering dedication to building great software.

We kicked things off in mid-2009 with four freelance developers (Nathaniel Bibler, Tyler Hunt, Thomas Meeks, and leader Gregg Pollack). The name stems from Gregg’s previous consulting and content venture, Rails Envy — a tongue-in-cheek nod towards non-Rails developers’ envy of the framework. At the same time, Envy Labs spoke to the ideal Gregg wanted to achieve: A company that took care of its people with a culture others would envy.

In 2011, we bootstrapped a product offering of our own in the form of Code School. The learn-to-code platform grew quickly, and its employee count soon eclipsed Envy’s consulting arm. By 2014, the two had become separate entities (each taking a pair of the founding members) and it sold to Pluralsight later that year.
