Can chiropractors prescribe medicine?
One of the common questions chiropractors get asked a lot is if they can prescribe medicine. In the U.S., chiropractors are not permitted to prescribe or perform surgery. Instead, chiropractors are highly trained to focus on treating conditions with their hands rather than medicine. They target inflamed, irritated, and injured muscles, joints, and bones with adjustments and manipulation using both their hands and chiropractic instruments at times.
Chiropractors carefully and naturally treat aches and pains, whether it be the result of a recent car accident or an aggravating source of chronic pain. Many people find chiropractic care to be a great natural alternative to over-the-counter medications and heavy painkillers, especially when used as a preventative measure to combat early signs of pain before it develops into a more severe issue.
While chiropractors are not permitted to prescribe medication, they may work alongside doctors or partner with primary care physicians so patients can get medication as required.

How safe is a chiropractic adjustment?
Chiropractic adjustments are a natural solution to spinal discomfort and pain. An adjustment is completely safe as long as it is done by a professional chiropractor who has the experience and education to properly treat spinal misalignment. Chiropractors are highly trained to perform adjustments safely to produce the best results and highest level of pain relief while keeping the risk of nerve compression or disk herniation to a minimum.
Adjustments encourage better spinal support and more comfortable posture. There are many other benefits associated with safe chiropractic adjustments, including improved blood pressure, range of motion, and breathing, especially for asthma or scoliosis sufferers. Plus, adjustments can alleviate lower back pain, something 4 out of 5 Americans deal with at some point.
Adjustments are also linked to improved blood flow to help with neurological symptoms and side effects. Migraine and tension headaches may be relieved through chiropractic adjustments as well by fixing back misalignment and reducing muscle tension.

Reminder: We will be closed on Saturday, May 29th.

Is chiropractic care just for your spine?
Many people wonder what chiropractic care all entails. Chiropractors often receive questions on whether they only address back problems or if they can help with pain that's all over the body.
The good news for chronic pain sufferers is that chiropractic care treats not only direct back and spinal pain, but also inflammation and pressure injuries in other parts of the body. Chiropractic treatments cover the nerves, muscles, and bones in the arms, hands, feet, legs, elbows, shoulders, and neck.
That being said, much of chiropractic care is focused on spinal manipulation and adjustments as a lot of pain can be traced back to the spine. A misaligned spine or previous spinal damage can have a big impact on a person's posture, strength, and overall physical health, so the work of chiropractors is very important.
Chiropractors treat common conditions such as arthritis, scoliosis, and fibromyalgia in addition to general pain relief for sore muscles and inflamed joints. Even things like headaches and difficulty sleeping can be addressed by chiropractors.

How routine chiropractic treatments can help with weight loss
Did you know about half of all American adults try to lose weight in a given year? Weight loss is on a lot of people's minds as they consider diet, exercise, and other lifestyle changes. Chiropractors often get asked about weight loss, and whether they can help patients shed pounds.
While a visit to the chiropractor won't produce rapid weight loss overnight, professional chiropractic care may help with weight loss, particularly when combined with a healthy lifestyle including diet and fitness. Chiropractors fix misalignments and spinal issues to help people stay active and strong, which in turn supports physical activity.
Overall, people feel better when they can get up and move, and being active and taking good care of yourself is possible with chiropractic care. For people who are struggling to lose weight and living a primarily sedentary lifestyle, whether it's due to serious back pain or long hours at a desk, chiropractic treatments can help to improve their muscle and joint health to get more active.

Why athletes need to see a chiropractor
Athletes use their muscles and rely on a strong and healthy core to perform in their chosen sport. Whether it's football or running, swimming or golfing, athletes across all different sports can benefit from seeing a chiropractor to protect their muscle and joint health.
Strains, sprains, and spinal injuries are common in athletes due to their rigorous physical activity and the pressure their musculoskeletal systems are under during training and competition. Maintaining good spinal health can keep athletes in tip-top shape so they can keep striving toward their athletic ambitions. Instead of being sidelined by painful injuries, athletes can work with their chiropractors on the best plan for stretching, adjustments, and other preventative measures.
If athletes do get injured, they can visit their local chiropractor for help with sports injury rehabilitation. Adjustments to the neck and spine can minimize inflammation and improve joint function. They can also address alignment issues to ensure the spine is protected for future athletic activities.

Common questions for chiropractors
Chiropractors offer natural treatments for the spine, joints, and muscles to alleviate pain and encourage healthy habits and lifestyles. Chiropractors get a lot of questions about what they do and how they help people. Here are three of the most common questions for chiropractors.
What conditions do chiropractors treat? Chiropractors treat a variety of spinal-related injuries including back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, sciatica, migraine headaches, herniated discs, sports injuries, and more. Spinal manipulation and adjustments can address these painful conditions in many cases.
How safe is chiropractic care? Safety is paramount in all chiropractic treatment, with chiropractors going through rigorous medical training to ensure patients are in good hands. Chiropractic training includes state license requirements and earning a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree from an accredited college.
Can children see chiropractors? Chiropractic care is safe for people of all ages, including school-aged kids, toddlers, and even infants. Chiropractors can help children with noticeable spinal issues, persistent headaches, earaches, and asthma. Some parents may prefer an initial consultation with a chiropractor before starting treatments.

What is upper cross syndrome and how does it affect you?
One of the many conditions chiropractors treat is called upper cross syndrome (UCS). This occurs when the neck, chest, and shoulder muscles become deformed, primarily due to poor posture. These muscles, particularly the levator scapula and upper trapezius, may become strained when the head is repeatedly pushed forward for long periods. As the back muscles in the neck and shoulder become overactive, the major and minor pectoralis in the chest tighten up and shorten. An X shape can form when the overactive muscles overlap with the surrounding underused muscles.
Sitting or standing with the head pushed forward for extended periods puts people at risk of developing upper cross syndrome. A lot of people fall into this position when they are watching TV, reading a book, texting on a smartphone, or scrolling on their laptops. Driving and biking are other common activities where people typically push their head forward.
With upper cross syndrome, the neck appears bent forward and the shoulders take on a rounded, stooped appearance. Due to the strain the deformed muscles put on the supporting tendons, joints, and bones, this condition can lead to pain in the jaw, neck, and lower back, as well as headache and fatigue. Those affected by UCS may also struggle to drive long distances or relax with a good book or movie.
It's important to correct slouching or leaning as much as possible to keep the spine in line and avoid overworking any muscles. If you are suffering from posture problems and symptoms of UCS, it's best to see a chiropractor who can properly diagnose and treat the condition. Realignments and adjustments are part of UCS chiropractic care, along with stretching exercises and physical therapy in some cases.

Is it a sprain or a strain and what’s the difference?
Sprains and strains are common injuries that can occur during exercise, heavy lifting, accidents, and daily physical activities. These two injuries are often confused for one another, but there is a difference. A sprain is a stretch or tear in a ligament, while a strain is a stretched or torn tendon or muscle.
So how can you actually tell if you have a sprain or a strain? Pay attention to your symptoms, the main difference is that a sprain usually causes bruising near the affected area, while a strain leads to muscle spasms. Both sprains and strains can cause painful swelling as well as less flexibility and disruptions to your range of motion.
If you're suffering from pain but still not sure if it's a sprain or a strain, a chiropractor can diagnose these injuries, which often affect the back, wrist, thumb, knee, and ankle joints. They may need to request an X-ray or MRI to rule out any broken bones before recommending rest, ice, compression, and elevation.
