UCF teacher interns helped plan Halloween-themed STEAM activities for young patients at Nemours Children’s Hospital during this week’s Spooky School Spooktacular! 🎃

Congratulations to our summer cohort of teacher interns who will be graduating tomorrow! They are ready for their next adventure! 🎓🎉

Congratulations to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, University of Memphis, and University of Tennessee Health Science Center for the launch of their new program, All Kids Academy, that will provide semester-long internships to prepare future educators to teach infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with special health and educational needs. All Kids Academy was modeled after PedsAcademy at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando, Florida.

Innovative programs like this are helping to ensure that future teachers are well-versed in educational best practices for children with chronic and complex medical conditions.

Le Bonheur program aims to educate patients — and teachers All Kids Academy is an internship program that trains U of M child development and family studies majors to educate Le Bonheur patients 5 years old and younger who are experiencing prolonged hospitalization.

UCF Early Childhood Development Alum, Former PedsAcademy Intern Pursues Career as Child Life Specialist A pediatric cancer survivor himself, Carlos Aleman ’23 has gone from PedsAcademy intern to child life gaming and technology specialist at Nemours Children’s Hospital.

Halo and Molly, our certified Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.®), helped out in the hospital classroom this week! For hospitalized children, animal-assisted activities are shown to reduce stress, increase self-esteem, improve overall well-being and much more! So thankful for all our volunteer pet therapy teams at Nemours. 🐾 ❤️

Our UCF teacher interns provide Nemours patients with engaging, hands-on learning opportunities. Trinity ( grade 8 ) created a 3D, interactive model of an animal cell using QuiverVision during this afternoon’s science lesson in the hospital classroom.

Our patients and school program team love when our R.E.A.D. dogs visit the hospital classroom. 🐾 The READing Paws program utilizes therapy dogs to help hospitalized children improve their reading and communication skills. R.E.A.D. companions, like Halo, are trained to look and listen as a child reads aloud. Their presence creates a relaxed, comfortable, and nonjudgmental environment for young readers.

Camilo Salgado-Bocanegra, director de la organización educativa colombiana sin fines de lucro REDLACEH, se unió recientemente a la maestra de educación especial Rebeca Grysko, PhD, endonde visitaron a Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida.

Durante su estadía en Florida, Camilo aprendió sobre los servicios educativos para pacientes y sobre PedsAcademy®, el primer programa de pasantías de este prototipo para futuros maestros. El señor Camilo y la Dra. Grysko analizaron formas de mejorar los resultados educativos de los niños hospitalizados y la necesidad de programas que se centren en preparar mejor a los futuros educadores para enseñar a los niños con necesidades médicas.

From spooky stories to silly ghost rhymes, books are a great way to celebrate Halloween. PedsAcademy distributed over 120 books to patients and their visiting siblings at Nemours Children’s Hospital during our annual Putting the “BOO” in BOOks event. 👻 📖 🎃

The PedsAcademy Internship Program was honored with the Southeastern Regional Association of Teacher Educators’ 2022 Innovation in Teacher Education Award. PedsAcademy offers UCF teacher candidates the opportunity to provide instruction to children during their stay at Nemours Children’s Hospital, FL.
