On 8/8/24, at approximately 12:30 p.m., officers responded to a shooting at a convenience store near S. Ivey Lane and Ivey Court. When officers arrived, they found a 29-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Investigators at the scene, collected witness interviews and surveillance footage. Through those means, officers were able to identify Trevon Morgan (DOB 7/14/2000) as a potential suspect. Morgan can be seen in the surveillance footage walking in and out of the convenience store with a full-size handgun and an extended magazine in his right pocket. Video also captured Morgan rummaging through a vehicle the victim was driving. When the victim found Morgan inside the vehicle, words were exchanged. Morgan then walked across the parking lot of the business. From a distance, the two began yelling at each other. During the altercation, Morgan fired multiple rounds, striking the victim. After the shooting, Morgan was seen fleeing the scene. According to witnesses, Morgan and the victim were previously best friends, but had recently had a falling out over money. From the statements of witnesses present and video evidence gathered probable cause existed to charge Trevon Morgan with: -Attempted Felony Murder with a Firearm -Armed Burglary of a Conveyance with a Firearm -Aggravated Assault with a Firearm -Open Carry of a Firearm -Discharging a Firearm in Public An arrest warrant was signed on August 8th. On August 13th, Morgan was taken into custody by OPDโ€™s Fugitive Unit and the U.S. Marshalls.

Congratulations to SVU Detective Eddie Barnhorst for being awarded Detective of the Month for September. Your dedication to serving the residents of Orlando is commendable and we are lucky to have you.

On 09/02/24, at approximately 4:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Walmart near South Goldenrod Road and Market Place Drive in response to an armed robbery and attempted kidnapping. The suspect, later identified as Juan Perez (DOB 09/17/69), was captured on surveillance footage pacing in the parking lot before approaching the victim. Perez demanded the victim's purse while threatening her with a knife held to her throat. He then forced the victim into the trunk of her car, but fled with her purse when a bystander intervened. On 09/03/24, at approximately 12:30 p.m., detectives identified and arrested Perez on charges of Attempted Kidnapping, Armed Robbery with a Deadly Weapon, Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Battery and Destruction of Evidence. It should also be noted that Perez was on federal probation for a previous kidnapping charge.

Officers took time to strengthen their ties with the youth last week at the weekly Lift with a Cop program. This initiative not only fosters physical fitness but also builds trust and rapport between law enforcement and the community's young members.

On October 24, 2001, OPD responded to the area of West Colonial Drive and North John Young Parkway in reference to a Child Abuse investigation. The victim, 2 year-old Saundra Young, sustained severe injuries which caused her delayed death on December 24, 2023. Following a renewed investigation by OPD in 2024, the suspect in Youngโ€™s death, Gregory Fields (DOB 6/30/1980), was indicted by a Grand Jury for First Degree Murder and apprehended on August 30, 2024. This is a prime example of how OPD Homicide Detectives relentlessly pursue justice for victims of crime and their families.

On 08/10/2024, officers responded to the Popeyeโ€™s near Pershing Ave. and Semoran Blvd. in reference to an Armed Commercial Robbery with a Firearm. When officers arrived, they gathered surveillance footage from surrounding areas and obtained a description of the suspect, who was seen wearing all-black, a ski mask, and gloves. Video was located which captured the suspect walking through a nearby apartment complex, on 5 Flags Blvd., before and after the crime. After speaking with several apartment staff members and residents, the suspect was identified as Rondale Hughes (DOB: 09/24/1992). Officers then conducted an operation, near the apartment complex, where they observed Hughes placing a mask on his head, while walking toward an Amscot, at the corner of Semoran Blvd. and Annshire Way. Units were standing by to prevent what appeared to be an imminent robbery. However, Hughes did not rob the business, and decided to take a bus south on Semoran Blvd. Hughes was followed and eventually caught by units, who found a firearm (BB gun) in his waistband, gloves, and a mask. Hughes was arrested on 08/16/2024 and later linked to a second robbery at a KFC, near Semoran Blvd. and Kalmia Dr. Hughes was ultimately charged with two counts of Armed Robbery with a Firearm and two counts of Kidnapping with the intent to commit a felony. This is a great example of detailed and diligent police work, carried out by OPDโ€™s Violent Crimes Unit!

Every night, our officers are #onthebeat, working to take illegal drugs off the streets of Orlando! Yesterday, OPD's North Patrol Division was proactively patrolling neighborhoods north of Downtown and made several drug arrests, including one for 2 grams of fentanyl! Did you know: It only takes a two-milligram dose of fentanyl (similar to 5-7 grains of salt) to cause death of an average size adult?

We couldn't let #NationalDogDay pass us by without recognizing our K-9 officers, for all the hard work that they do. In addition to detecting drugs and explosives, they also routinely assist with the capture of suspects that are attempting to flee law enforcement.

On 08/05/2024, officers responded to reports of 5 suspects attempting to break into vehicles near Pine St. and Eola Dr. When officers arrived, they located the group near Summerlin Ave. and Central Blvd. All 5 suspects, including 4 juveniles, attempted to run from police. However, most of them were quickly taken into custody. With the help of patrol officers, their small unmanned aircraft systems (SUAS), and an OPD K9 Unit, one of the juvenile suspects was located about 30 minutes later. He had been hiding on the roof of a nearby house. The ages of the juvenile suspects are 13, 15, 16 & 17. All of them were charged with Burglary of a Conveyance and multiple counts of Attempted Burglary of a Conveyance, which are third-degree felonies. Denzel Fogle (DOB 07/21/2004) was the only adult arrested. He was charged with Burglary of a Conveyance, 7 counts of Attempted Burglary of a Conveyance, Resisting an Officer without Violence and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor.

As the new school year approaches, it's important that we all contribute to ensuring the safety of our community. Please remember to reduce your speed in designated school zones, watch out for crossing guards and kids, and consider leaving earlier to navigate through potential traffic congestion. By working together, we can create a safer environment for everyone this school year.
