The Orlando Police Department continues to prioritize crime-fighting initiatives, as well as strengthening community relationships. In addition to enforcing state laws and local ordinances, many of our officers also work closely with non-profits to help people experiencing homelessness gain access to programs that provide medical care, shelter, food, and overall security.

Over the last 7 months, the Homeless Intervention Unit at the Orlando Police Department has worked closely with the Hope Team, Code Enforcement and other community partners to contact, educate and facilitate care for individuals.

Out of 15,000 encounters, 2.52% have resulted in arrests, that include active warrants for violent crime, possession of illegal drugs, drinking alcohol out of open containers, etc. Most recently, there was the arrest of two individuals for attempted murder in the Ivanhoe area.

“The Homeless Intervention Unit was not created to arrest homeless people. Our officers are providing thousands of individuals with resources from community partners. There are the few who get arrested for committing a crime.”- Chief Eric D. Smith.

Check out Sergeant Travis Lamont, who is over the Homeless Intervention Unit, and why he loves what he does.
