To close out Women’s History Month, meet Liz Trader, one of our exemplary computer engineering Ph.D. students and an entrepreneurship coach at UCF’s Blackstone Launchpad. She is passionate about facilitating collaboration between academia and industry.
“One way to emphasize women's accomplishments in engineering is to dispel preconceived notions about how an engineer is supposed to look, talk and act. As a woman who like many others has, at times, felt like I wasn't smart enough, I strive to make sure my explanations are simple and easy to understand, in addition to trying to be bubbly and have good energy during my presentations so people feel welcomed. Because of this, I've been told that my presentations do not look or sound like typical technical presentations and I thought this made me less than. That feeling was reinforced by the MANY shocked faces telling me that I do not look like, sound like, or act like an engineer.
I soon began to realize that my communication style as well as the experiences that influenced it are an important part of the value I provide to any team and I have also had the joy of hearing from so many people who felt competent and capable just because I gave a technical presentation while not looking, sounding, or acting ‘like an engineer.’ I think by opening our minds about what an engineer is supposed to act like we will find that there are so many women who have engineering accomplishments that may not "look like engineering" as well as encourage others to cultivate useful skills.”
For our next Women's History Month spotlight, we are featuring one of our new assistant professors, Enxia Zhang! Dr. Zhang is an incredible role model for our students, faculty and staff. Her research interests include reliability and radiation response in advanced microelectronic devices, and the characterization of defects and their effects on the performance, reliability and radiation response of emerging materials and devices for space applications.
"Working in STEM has provided me with a lot of opportunities to mentor young engineers from many backgrounds. Seeing their growth and professional development is a source of pride."
Meet Maria Bonina Zimath, one of our stellar undergraduate students that we're spotlighting for Women's History Month! Maria is a senior majoring in electrical engineering and serves as president of the UCF student chapter of the IEEE Power and Energy Society.
"It makes me so happy to see the growth of women entering the engineering field and I will continue to encourage more women to pursue careers in engineering. I believe in amplifying women's voices, celebrating our achievements and being part of the story! Let's continue to honor and uplift the accomplishments of women everywhere."
Congratulations to assistant professor Di Wu's computer engineering student, Queenly Xie, for being awarded not one, but TWO travel grants for the International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA) 2024 uArch workshop, and International Conference on Architectural Support for Programming Languages and Operating Systems 2024 YArch workshop (ASPLOS).
