The Fowl Farmstand

Pastured poultry raised on our homestead. Our birds are well cared for and spend their days on fresh

01/08/2023

We are in the middle of winter, the land is cold and sleepy. The skies are frequently grey and moist. Our family is spending lots of time in our cozy house reading school books and trying new recipes. As nice as this time is, I am getting the itch to start seedlings and plan out what egg layers will be added to our flock this year. Yesterday I cooked one of the heritage turkeys from last season- it was amazing. I wasn't sure how many turkeys we should do this year but after last night's dinner we will have 2 or 3 heritage birds for our family!
If you are interested in trying a heritage turkey this year, let me know! We are passionate about providing our family and yours healthfully raised birds.

Meet my sister, Sara. She moved in a few months ago and we are so happy she’s here. Change can be difficult for her but she is adapting well, along with us! She used to be a city girl but not any more.. She surprises us with the things she is willing to do, this lovely lady is not afraid to get dirty! Weighing our birds and placing the tags is the perfect afternoon activity today. We have a few more chickens available! Message us today, Miss Sara will gladly hand off the chicken with one of her award winning smiles.

Some days Joey and I look at one another and wonder why we didn’t buy a lake house with a tiny yard… but most days we love being outside with the birds, watching our guard geese grow up and interact with the chickens. Jojo and I have had many adventures searching for the eggs that our chickens have hidden in wood piles. Little James has had so many interactions with our 30 pound turkeys that he just walks right up to them and claps to make them gobble. I guess we couldn’t do all of this in a tiny lake property. Our 2022 season is starting to wrap up, the last batch of Cornish cross are set for butcher at the end of this month! We have chicken and a few turkeys available to reserve, let us know if you’d like to try some farm raised poultry!

So much for a beautiful shot of these Toms strutting their stuff! These broad breasted white turkeys have been such an entertaining and curious breed to raise. They are getting so big and we have 1 broad breasted and 1 heritage mix that haven’t been claimed yet! If you are looking for a pasture raised turkey to be the centerpiece of your Thanksgiving table, let us know!

Thank you to everyone who supports us, our second batch of chickens are sold out, but we have some more available for our September batch! Our chickens are outside on grass and grow on locally grown broiler feed and all the bugs they can find. This is our final batch of the year, so please contact us if you’d like to fill your freezer with locally grown, pasture raised poultry.

I’m such a sucker for pretty eggs!

Did you know if you keep your eggs unwashed, they can sit on your counter for weeks?! Eggs have a protective coating called a bloom and when they get washed, the bloom is washed off as well.

Did you also know we sell unwashed eggs seasonally? $4 per dozen or $5 for an 18 pack.
Contact us if you need some farm fresh *pretty* eggs!

If Jojo’s around he will gladly hand over the eggs and passionately talk all about his love for our birds and maybe even bring one out for share and tell! 🐓

We have pasture raised chicken almost ready for processing. If you want to support local farms and see the difference between store bought and pasture raised, now is your chance! The birds weigh between 3 and 5 pounds each, perfect for the smoker or instant pot. Our chicken is $5.00 per pound, message us today if you’d like to eat local farm fresh food without all the hassle of chicken p**p!

Meet Jojo. This guy loves birds. When we can’t find him, there is a good chance he’s in the chicken coop, naming the different chickens in our egg layer flock, spending time with the nervous hens and gaining their trust. He has no fear of the overprotective roosters, or the almost intimidating turkeys when they are hungry. He genuinely loves the outdoors and all of our animals. We are blessed to call him our son, and the animals are fortunate to have him watching over them.

These beautiful Thanksgiving birds are getting big. They fear nothing and are some of the most entertaining fowl we have had the opportunity to raise! Almost all of these guys have been claimed, if you are interested in free range pasture raised turkeys, message me!

Meet our free range egg layer flock of chickens. Well, I should say flocks… we have been trying like the dickens to integrate our 4 month old layers with our established ladies. Each flock separately gathers round the “water cooler” and discusses the day’s activities and menu options available from the fields. Then the youngsters see our matronly ladies come close, so they flap and squawk dramatically while running for the nearest tree. The established grown ups pretty much ignore them now, these gals are too mature for such foolishness.

We have fresh eggs available most days, $3.50 a dozen or $5 for an 18 pack. Message us if you’re interested.

This morning we got our first ever batch of turkey poults! We are excited to raise a new species of bird. Already these guys have such a different temperament than chickens, these little fluff balls are curious and friendly!

These guys are 3 weeks old, and this is their first time on grass! They aren’t quite ready to go on pasture full time but on a beautiful sunny day like today, we are more than happy to provide a grassy field trip!

First Cornish Cross batch is all settled in. These little fluff balls will grow fast!

Excited to get our first batch of Cornish cross chicks next month! These birds average between 4 and 5 pounds and are full of meat! It’s so satisfying to know where our chicken comes from and to have the privilege of raising them in a way that is honoring to the birds.
