Had a couple people ask about this segment I did last week and how to listen. Head on over to and click the link in her bio, or search for Life’s A Mom on Spotify! Loved having such a tough conversation and bringing awareness to difficult topics ✨
DBT GROUP! Did you know that for DBT therapy to be considered a FULL program, it must involve 4 components:
1) individual therapy
2) phone coaching
3) consultation team for the therapist
and 4) SKILLS GROUP! Skills group is where clients are given the opportunity to:
✨learn the skills in a structured format
✨build mastery in skill implementation outside of therapy
✨walk alongside other individuals who are working to build a “life worth living”
✨practice using the skills in a supportive, positive, nonjudgmental environment

What is a “window of tolerance”? Coined by Dr. Dan Siegel, clinical researcher and author of The Whole Brain Child (10/10 recommend BTW), the “window of tolerance” is a term used to describe optimal arousal of our central nervous system as well as our threshold - or capacity - to remain within that window. In other words, our emotional and biological response to stressors in the environment, and our physiological ability to respond effectively to them
🔴 Hyperarousal aka red zone: HIGH arousal, overstimulation, emotional and physiological overwhelm. Our central nervous system is in overdrive and actively in fight or flight
🟢 Optimal arousal aka green zone: calm energy. This is our ideal state of regulation. Our ideal window of tolerance allows for an overall balanced ebb and flow of emotions and emotional reactions (think: a moderate bell curve with a few short-lived spikes)
🔵 Hypoarousal aka blue zone: LOW arousal, underwhelm, understimulation, detachment, feeling disconected from emotions and the world around you, numb. Our central nervous system is “stuck” and shut-off; freeze mode
While certain biological factors and past adverse experiences may contribute to the width of our window (i.e. how wide or narrow), there are many ways to increase our ability to tolerate activating situations and expand the window of tolerance we are currently operating from
Draw it out! How wide or narrow is your window? P.S. This is an excellent awareness activity to do with our littles too, and even infants have windows of tolerance!
A good reminder as we enter the holiday season! Boundaries are more than okay; they are critical ✨
With everything going on in the world, our central nervous system needs more love and care than ever. How do we know if our CNS is on high alert and needs a little TLC? We might notice:
🚨 rapid heart rate
🚨 shallow breathing
🚨 pale, clammy, or sweaty skin
🚨 racing thoughts and difficulty forming sentences
🚨 tearfulness or panic
🚨 tension
🚨 blurred vision
🚨 impairments in auditory processing
While these are some signs, every body and experience is unique. It’s also important to note that high arousal is different than under arousal - both of which are indicative that something is off.
Next time you feel on edge, try one of these 3 strategies to reset your nerves!
