"You’re gonna regret this, Mr. Insurance Man."
My fiance and I watched 'Killers of the Flower Moon' the other day and, while it took us 2 days to get through the whole thing, we enjoyed the movie. I won't give any spoilers here for those that have yet to see it.
The quote above is Robert De Niro's character's reaction when his local "insurance man" advises him that there are coverage issues with a life insurance policy that he took out on a person that is now deceased and home office is contesting the settlement.
After I heard that quote, I laughed hysterically thinking about the many times that I've been called "the insurance guy" or "the insurance dude". But it also got me thinking about the insurance man in the movie. Was he an agent, an adjuster, carrier staff, all of the above? Keep in mind, this is 1920's Oklahoma. So naturally, I had to do some Googling and share some fun facts I learned along the way.
Did you know that Benjamin Franklin is credited as the forefather of insurance in the United States? In 1751, Franklin and his Union Fire Company met with other fire-fighting companies to discuss the creation of a fire insurance company, resulting in the formation of the Philadelphia Contributionship. Members paid in equal amounts with the promise that they would be covered in the event of a fire.
Much later, in 1943, the New York Standard Fire Policy, which I'm sure most in insurance are familiar with to this day, was accepted nearly nationally but there was still no adjuster. The burden of proof was on the insured. Thus, out of good faith and a necessity of expertise, the insurance adjuster was born and created by law to transfer the burden of proof from the insured to the insurer. The profession began in assessing fire losses and determining validity, and expanded to assessing losses in cargo shipments during transit. The profession expanded with the complexity of claims booming as well as the increasing number of carriers.
Today, the job of an adjuster is much more complex than it was back in the day. Adjusters not only protect the insurer from fraudulent claims, but also help the insured navigate the complicated claims process while negotiating to secure a fair settlement for all parties.
Adjusters must possess a seemingly infinite knowledge of insurable interests, risks, repair methods, market values, policy language, and complicated estimating platforms but also maintain a sympathetic bedside manner while in the face of a heavy claim workload and insureds that are possibly in the midst of one of the most stressful events of their lifetime. Each interest category in itself is seemingly infinite with a constantly evolving world of tech and mechanical advances.
Insurance adjusting is an often forgotten profession and also one of the highest stress jobs in the US. Adjusters can be regarded as heroes or foe.
My opinion? The work is supremely rewarding and I can't think of a more interesting job.
In 2023 there was, an estimated, $308.6 billion paid out on fraudulent insurance claims. Photo estimating and AI will, without a doubt, have a huge effect on this number in the future.
I have the absolute bare minimum in knowledge and experience in using AI and it took me 10 minutes to create the images below. In most of them, you can tell that something is off but this technology will continue to get more accurate and realistic. The images below were created using prompts for specific make, model, and color of tractor trucks with specific damage. They were frighteningly accurate.
We could also discuss the implications of AI fraud in property, specialty, and of course automotive claims. It would not be hard for someone versed in AI image creation to process photos of fire damage in a home that hasn't had a fire in it. Or even upgrade furnishings and trim in a home to manipulate the scope.
The most profitable fraud will most likely be in the automotive sector as auto claims are normally on the lower end of the payout scale and looked at with the least scrutiny.
How can we combat this type of emerging fraud and many others?
Send an experienced IA!
