Heading to the pool or beach? Here's why you should always swim near a lifeguard! πββοΈ
Lifeguards are critically important for your safety. They are highly trained and skilled professionals who specialize in water rescue, CPR, and first aid.
In an emergency, every second counts, and lifeguards are equipped to provide immediate assistance, potentially saving lives and preventing serious injuries.
By swimming near a lifeguard, you ensure that expert help is readily available if needed. Whether it's a strong current at the beach or an accident at the pool, lifeguards are your first line of defense.
Stay safe and enjoy the water with confidence, knowing a lifeguard is on duty!
Can you perform these steps in the water, in order, without stopping? This ability could save your life in an emergency.
Knowing this swimming sequence is an essential part of being water smart. Learn and practice it, and encourage others to do the same. ππΎ
If there was a babysitting emergency, would your teen know what to do? Not only will our babysitting course teach them valuable lifesaving skills, they will also:
- Grow their resume.
- Gain industry knowledge.
- Build confidence.
Important Reminder: Swimming lessons are an essential layer of protection, but layers only work when used together.
To keep our little ones safe, we need to combine multiple safety measures, including:
- Barriers: Secure pools and water areas properly using > 48-inch fencing with a self-closing and self-latching gate.
- Active Supervision (3Cs - Close, Constant, Capable): Always keep a watchful eye on children in or near the water.
- Water Competency: itβs never too early to get children in Swim Lessons!
- Life Jackets: Use them when necessary, especially in open waters or when boating.
- Emergency Preparedness: Know what to do in an emergency or if you see someone in distress in the water.
Together, these 5 layers offer multiple points of protection for our loved ones. Let's ensure every splash is a safe one!

πCOUNSELOR SPOTLIGHT: Elise Cooper was not only a star with our kindergartners this summer but she made history in August, by competing in the 2023 Pan Am U20 Track and Field Championship located in Puerto Rico. Cooper is a member of Team USAβs U20 team and runs the 200 meter.
βThis was my first time running in an international meet which is exciting! Itβs been a really fun experience and I got to run a new personal best of 22.8 seconds in the 200.β
Cooperβs time is the 5th fastest high school girls time in the country and the #1 fastest time for her Mcdonogh School class of 2025. Congratulations Elise!
While we take steps to ensure our little ones are safe on land, it's crucial we don't overlook the importance of water safety.
Did you know? A baby can drown in just an inch or two of water, and it can happen silently within seconds. Whether it's a bathtub, pool, or even a bucket, we always need to be aware of the water around our little ones.
Here are some tips for baby water safety:
1οΈβ£ Never leave babies and toddlers unsupervised near water - not even for a second!
2οΈβ£ Start swim lessons early but remember, lessons don't replace supervision.
3οΈβ£ Ensure pools are fenced with self-latching and self-locking gates.
4οΈβ£ Empty all tubs, buckets, containers, and kiddie pools immediately after use and remove all toys from water areas.
5οΈβ£ Use life jackets when on, in, or around natural bodies of water and when boating.

This is how you can spot a swimmer in trouble. β¬οΈ
β They aren't making forward progress in the water
β β Unable to tread water
β β β Are motionless or face down
You should never go in the water after someone because it can put you in danger too. The best and safest way to help someone is to reach out to them or find a flotation device you can throw to help pull them to safety.
What is one thing you use butter for? π€ If you say burns, you're actually causing more damage to your skin.
The grease from the butter will slow the release of heat from the skin and affect the healing process.

Adding a learn-to-swim program to your aquatics facility is beneficial for many reasons beyond teaching kids an important life saving skill.
If your current facility does not offer learn-to-swim programs, consider the following benefits of why you should introduce them:
1. You build a sense of community with your patrons and a level of trust begins to build for your facility. By offering swim lessons, your facility becomes a community staple and a trusted source for water safety.
2. You would generate year round revenue for a service that is vital to the health of your community by allowing children (and adults) to be active in a low impact way.
3. You would save lives. Offering swimming lessons means offering a critical life saving skill that children as young as 1 can use.
Learn-to-swim programs arenβt an overnight endeavor, but the long term potential outweighs the short term difficulty, and best of all, you are helping change the numbers of drowning occurrences.
