Mystic Whaler and Central Coast Ocean Adventures Join
the Southern California Plankton Watch
Oxnard, CA – Central Coast Ocean Adventures Foundation (CCOAF) and the schooner Mystic Whaler are now partners with the Southern California Plankton Watch.
Interest and awareness of plankton and blooms brought together scientists and informal educators in the Southern California Bight region to form a volunteer plankton monitoring network which led to the formation of the Southern California Plankton Watch. Mystic Whaler's crew and educators received their initial training in plankton collection in February 2024. CCOAF/Mystic Whaler, along with local young people who come on board Mystic for experiential educational programs, will be assisting in collecting data for the Watch. This ongoing effort increases the number of eyes on the ocean for understanding changing ocean systems and early detection of blooms and sets into place a method for rapid response.

About Central Coast Ocean Adventures Foundation (CCOAF): Founded in 2021, the Mission of CCOAF is to utilize adventure through sailing and the sea to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) comprehension, environmental stewardship, teamwork, self-confidence, and nautical skills for the communities of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties with a special focus on youth. CCOAF offers year-round experiential educational programming aboard its 110-foot Schooner Mystic Whaler to schools, community-based organizations, and the public. Wwwcentralcoastoceanadventures.org

We rescued our first marine mammal of 2024 this afternoon. This wayward malnourished and dehydrated sea lion pup was about 1/4 mile from the ocean wandering down the road. It took cover in Coyote Brush and hid there until our rescue team arrived. This little pup ( #001) is safely under CIMWI’s care now!

Education Note:
Coyote Bush (Baccharis pilularis), also called Coyote Brush, is a common California native shrub. It is versatile and adaptable in a wide range of landscape applications. Its short height and spreading habit make this plant a practical choice for groundcover and bank stabilization.

2nd Annual Parade of Frights - Channel Islands Harbor 10/05/2023

Good afternoon,

The Parade of Frights is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 28th and we would love it if you would consider participating in the parade.

There’s a ton of landside activities going on that day and having a large parade on the water would be amazing! Check out this link to see all the fun activities going on: https://www.channelislandsharbor.org/event/2nd-annual-parade-of-frights/

Please see the attached form for the Parade of Frights!
THIS MESSAGE IS BEING SENT ON BEHALF OF VENTURA COUNTY HARBOR DEPARTMENT DIRECTOR MICHAEL TRIPP

RE: 2ND ANNUAL PARADE OF FRIGHTS

Dear Boater,

Based on the success of last year’s Parade of Frights, our first-ever Halloween-themed boat parade, I’m pleased to announce we are moving forward with this event for a second year!

This year’s Parade of Frights is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2023. We scheduled the boat parade one-hour later based on the feedback from boaters who wanted to showcase their well-lit boats. We hope you plan to participate in this unique event, which provides you with an opportunity to unite with other boaters and help create lasting memories for attendees watching landside.

Prior to the boat parade, a variety of organizations and businesses will be offering Halloween-related events and activities to help build upon the overall experience. Of course, there will be many other places that offer Halloween activities this day, but what they don’t have is our unique location and proud boating community.

Please join us and register your vessel for the Parade of Frights. I’ve attached a boat entry form and a copy of the event poster. You can also download the boat entry form here: https://www.channelislandsharbor.org/event/2nd-annual-parade-of-frights/

We look forward to your participation in building upon this new tradition!

2nd Annual Parade of Frights - Channel Islands Harbor If you’re looking for a family-friendly event that’ll light up your night and put a sparkle in your eye, you’re in for a treat – our should we say, a ‘trick-or-treat’? The 2nd Annual Parade of Frights at the Channel Islands Harbor is back, and it’s going to be bigger, better, and spook...

08/24/2023

The Ventura County Harbor Department is pleased to announce we are coordinating the Channel Islands Harbor’s 2nd Annual “Parade of Frights,” a non-competitive Halloween-themed boat parade.

The Parade of Frights is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2023.

We have had ongoing discussions with members of the local boating community and recently invited them to fill out a registration form to enter a vessel in the parade.

Please see this link to the event listing on our website: https://www.channelislandsharbor.org/event/2nd-annual-parade-of-frights/

Based on feedback from the boating community, this event is a welcomed tradition to the Harbor. This event will draw a “Parade of Lights” type crowd in terms of attendance.

Prior to the boat parade, the Channel Islands Maritime Museum, the Channel Islands Farmers’ Market, and the Elite Theatre have agreed to offer Halloween activities and events during the day. We plan to provide marketing support for their events on our digital platforms and through paid advertising.

We would like to know if you would be interested in providing or hosting a Halloween type activity at your respective business. (Costume contest, discounts for dressed up patrons, special menu items, live music on the day of the event, handing out candy, etc.) If you are offering anything around this time, can you please let the Harbor Department know so we can market your activity?

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Channel Islands Maritime Museum Receives Generous Gift
of Four Pacific Ocean Sea Glass Portraits

Oxnard, CA: The Channel Islands Maritime Museum (CIMM) is thrilled to announce the gift of four exquisite and unique Pacific Ocean sea glass portraits to the Museum. The portraits will be featured in the natural science/whale hallway exhibition area of CIMM. The natural science/whale area features prominently in Museum tours and the Museum’s educational programming for local students.

The artworks were generously gifted to CIMM by Dr. Jack Sierad, the artist behind the unique pieces. Each piece of art is created from 100% Pacific Ocean hand-caught sea glass. All glass has been picked by Dr. Sierad and by many contributors to his artistic ventures. Each picture averages approximately one month’s worth of collecting on the beautiful sand beaches of the California coast and utilizes approximately four to five thousand pieces of sea glass in each picture. Each artwork takes up to four weeks to create.

“We were so very grateful for and deeply appreciative of this wonderful gift from Dr. Sierad,” says CIMM Executive Director Adri Howe. “As an art museum, we are always seeking out new creative perspectives to share with our guests, and these beautiful pieces absolutely expand those perspectives in a joyful and nature-filled way. We are so happy that Dr. Sierad felt that the Channel Islands Maritime Museum was the perfect new home for his art. CIMM is very happy to be that home!”

The sea glass art pieces are now on permanent exhibit at CIMM.

About the Channel Islands Maritime Museum: Founded in 1991 and located in Oxnard’s Channel Islands Harbor, the Museum’s galleries feature rare and beautiful maritime paintings dating back to the 1600s, more than sixty world-class models of historic ships, rotating thematic fine arts exhibitions, and interactive exhibits that encourage visitors to expand their horizons about everything maritime. The Museum is currently open Thursday-Monday from 12 pm to 4 pm.
