Following a recent call for entries, Chris Spence from S2's Ohio office crafted this design, which has been chosen as the new emblem for the Bolivar Area Historical Society. Its creation presented the particularly challenging task of incorporating many visual references to the town’s rich history, including Bolivar’s founding year and its geographic location in the state, Fort Laurens (Ohio’s only Revolutionary War fort), the Ohio & Erie Canal, the Tuscarawas River, and the Native Americans who once called the scenic hills, valleys, and woodlands of the area their home.

LOGO TALK: The origins of the NBA logo.

In 1969, the NBA was nervous about the upstart ABA - a rival basketball league. To help differentiate themselves from this upstart league, they hired Alan Siegel, founder of the branding company Siegel + Gale, to create a logo.

Before designing the new logo, Alan Siegel combed through numerous sports magazines and photo archives. Eventually, he came across a photo of Los Angeles Lakers superstar, Jerry West, that seemed appropriate for his task. From this photo Siegel created the unmistakable white silhouette on a red and blue background that became the logo that we all still associate with the most famous league in the world.

But the photo of West that many have always assumed to be the inspiration for the logo probably isn’t. It’s more likely a photo from the cover Sports Review magazine. The image on the cover is Jerry West in exactly in the position depicted in the NBA logo, aside from a lengthening of the dribbling arm so that it would not appear abnormally short in the silhouette.

Although it seems obvious that the silhouette is West, the NBA has never acknowledged it, for fear of having to pay royalties to West, or change their branding - both of which would be terribly expensive.

West has never been particularly excited about his image being used for the logo. The situation was embarrassing for him as he was labeled as “the man in the logo”. He felt that getting so much media attention and earning the nickname “The Logo” overshadowed the achievements of his basketball career.

In a 2017 interview, West said “I don’t like to do anything to call attention to myself… that’s just not who I am, period. If they would want to change it, I wish they would. In many ways, I wish they would.”

It seems unlikely that the NBA would make any changes at this point, but there has been a push from fans to re-design the logo with a silhouette of the late Kobe Bryant.

IT WILL NOT BE MISSED.

After a 27 year run, the browser detested by web developers everywhere was finally retired by Microsoft. A South Korean software engineer had a headstone created to commemorate the event.

Is your website full of life? Or is it an outdated pile of dusty bones? S2 Creative can reincarnate your web presence and create a new site that always looks great (no matter what browser your visitors use - but we sure won’t shed any tears over Internet Explorer).

Client: Do you do bowling team logos?
S2: Sure! What are you looking for?
Client: Well, the name of our team is Hambones and Honeys and we want a retro looking logo.
S2: We will work some up for you.

Not long ago, a new client approached us with a unique request. He wanted a design that could be placed on t-shirts, stickers, and other promo items with a message that promoted an anti-litter / pro-marijuana stance. The client's thought was, “Why would you trash this planet that can produce so many amazing medicinal plants, like cannabis?”. The client also wanted us to allude to recycling and incorporate the slogan "Toss Your Trash. Save Your Stash". It was a challenging concept to visualize. Here are a few of our designs.

The Palm Beach Opera Program: For the past several years, S2 would design a program for each separate opera so that would be three programs per season plus the Gala program. This year, we shifted gears and created one huge program book which ended up being 92 pages. It was such a hit with the Palm Beach Opera, that they want to do this again next year. The first photo has the note written to S2 when they sent a copy of the book to me. The other photos are random shots of the book and some screen shots of the spreads I took in InDesign.

This was a fun little project. We had to develop a logo for Irongoat Endurance which you can see below. After we developed the logo, they asked us to design their cycling jersey. This would be a first for us but we had a lot of fun designing the jersey for them. The one that they used was the last one. Which is your favorite?
