Meet Vera Hines!

She is currently in school to be a licensed veterinary technician.

Let’s play 2 truths and a lie. Can you spot the lie?

1. When she was 5 years old she had a bouncy house collapse on top of her.

2. She lived in Mexico for 6 months.

3. Her favorite dessert is coconut cream pie.

❗️IMPORTANT ALERT❗️ ANTIFREEZE TOXICITY CASES
¡Alerta importante! CASOS DE TOXICIDAD POR ANTICONGELANTE

We have seen multiple cases of suspected antifreeze toxicity from the Greenbush area. Pets are often exposed to antifreeze by accident - licking it up from a puddle that leaked from a car or discarded antifreeze in a garage. Antifreeze is LETHAL when ingested.
_______________
_______________
Even small amounts of ethylene glycol can be harmful to pets. Just one teaspoon can be fatal for cats, and one to two tablespoons can be deadly for dogs. If you see your pet ingesting antifreeze or suspect they may have come into contact with it, contact your veterinarian immediately. Ethylene glycol is quickly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and primarily metabolized in the kidneys. Initial symptoms are similar to those of alcohol intoxication in humans, but signs of kidney damage may not appear for several days. Early signs of poisoning include:

Nausea and vomiting
Diarrhea
Unsteady or uncoordinated movement
Disorientation
Increased heart rate
Weakness
Tremors
Fainting
Low body temperature
____________________________

Diarrea
Movimiento inestable o descoordinado
Desorientación
Aumento del ritmo cardíaco
Debilidad
Temblores
Desmayo
Baja temperatura corporal

- Swelling or lump at the site of the bite
- Pain or tenderness when touched
- Fever
- Lethargy or decreased appetite
- Discharge or pus from the wound

If you notice any of these symptoms in your furry friend, don't hesitate to contact our veterinary clinic for proper diagnosis and treatment 🐱💙

🐾🎉 Happy International Corgi Day! 🎉🐾

Did you know that Corgis are more than just adorable fluff balls? 🐶 Here are some interesting facts about the breed:

1️⃣ Corgis are known for their short legs, but don't let that fool you! They are actually quite agile and can keep up with the best of them.

2️⃣ Originally bred for herding, Corgis have a natural instinct to nip at the heels, which makes them excellent at rounding up livestock.

3️⃣ Despite their small size, Corgis have a big appetite! So make sure to keep an eye on their diet and portion control to maintain a healthy weight.

4️⃣ Queen Elizabeth II was a famous Corgi lover and owned more than 30 Corgis during her reign. Talk about royal approval!

📸 And of course, we can't forget about our very own licensed veterinary technician's Corgi named Astrid

🐾 Share your favorite Corgi stories or pictures in the comments below and let's celebrate these adorable and intelligent pups on this special day! 📸❤️

As we kick off Memorial Day weekend, we wanted to share some pet safety tips to remember! Please share this post to spread awareness.

-Keep alcohol and table scraps away from your pet
-Never leave your pet unsupervised around bodies of water
-Keep your pet hydrated
-Limit time in the sun and heat
-Keep your pet away from fireworks
-Make sure your pet has an ID tag or is microchipped

05/23/2024

Did you know that less than 10% of the pets that are unchipped will return home each year?

A microchip is a secure, reliable, permanent identification for your pet and the process is simple and affordable. Microchipping your pet can help ensure that if your pet goes missing, they can be identified and find their way back to you.

If your pet is chipped, make sure their information is up to date. To help keep pets close to their loved ones, share this post and remind your friends to !

🐦 We recently had a heartwarming experience of rescuing a cardinal from a glue trap. Glue traps are commonly used to catch pests, but they pose a danger to other wildlife as well.

In our rescue mission, we carefully applied mineral oil to safely release the cardinal from the sticky situation. It's important to handle these situations with caution, as struggling animals can injure themselves further. After being freed, the cardinal was transferred to Wildlife ER for further care.

💩🤢 Parvo, or canine parvovirus (CPV), is a highly contagious virus that affects dogs, particularly puppies. 🐶 It attacks the gastrointestinal tract and white blood cells, and can cause acute gastrointestinal illness. Symptoms vary by dog, but include:
1. Lethargy
2. Loss of appetite
3. Vomiting
4. Severe diarrhea, often bloody
5. Abdominal pain and bloating
6. Fever or low body temperature (hypothermia)

Canine parvovirus can occur at any time but generally tends to be more common in the spring and summer months. This is because the virus thrives in warmer weather and can survive longer in the environment under these conditions.

If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, it's crucial to seek veterinary care IMMEDIATELY. Early intervention and treatment can greatly improve the chances of recovery.

And as always, keep your beloved pet, especially puppies, up to date on their vaccines to prevent Parvovirus 🩺💉

🐔🏥 Pictured below is Dr. Emily Humphries and LVT Landry evaluating and treating a rooster with bumble foot. 🦶🚑

🔍 What is bumble foot? Bumble foot is a common foot condition in birds, often caused by bacterial infections. It appears as a swollen, red, and sometimes painful area on the bottom of their feet. Early detection and proper treatment are crucial to ensure a speedy recovery for our feathered friends.

Is your pet scooting or licking their rear? It could be their a**l glands.

A**l glands are located on the rear of dogs and cats. The glands produce an oily, fishy-smelling fluid that helps with scent marking. Sometimes these glands can get impacted or infected.

Soft, consistent stool, as well as allergies, are common causes of irritation. If your pet is scooting, licking excessively, or showing signs of discomfort around their rear end, contact us! We will help to identify the cause and determine the best course of treatment.

📣 It's wildlife baby season! 🐥🐻🦊Pictured is an adorable orphaned baby possum. It has been transferred to Wildlife ER - Education & Rehabilitation for care. If you find a baby animal that appears to be truly abandoned or injured, here's what you should do:

1️⃣ Assess the Situation: Observe the baby animal from a safe distance to determine if it is truly abandoned or injured. Keep in mind that some animals may leave their babies unattended for periods of time.

2️⃣ Contact Wildlife Rehabbers: If you believe the baby animal is in need of assistance, reach out to local wildlife rehabbers at Wildlife ER or animal control agencies. They have the expertise and resources to provide proper care.

3️⃣ Do Not Handle or Disturb: Avoid touching or handling the baby animal unless instructed to do so by professionals. Remember, some animals may carry diseases or become stressed if handled incorrectly.

4️⃣ Transport Safely: If necessary, carefully transport the baby animal to the designated wildlife rehabber or Eastern Shore Animal Hospital. Use a secure and well-ventilated container, keeping the animal away from direct sunlight and loud noises.

Together, we can make a difference in protecting wildlife! 🌿🐾

💈Let’s discuss Hairballs!💈
Here's what you need to know:

🔍 Why do cats get hairballs?
Cats are meticulous groomers and swallow loose hair while grooming themselves. This hair can accumulate in their stomach and form hairballs.

🚩 Signs of hairballs:
1️⃣ Frequent vomiting or retching
2️⃣ Coughing or gagging
3️⃣ Loss of appetite
4️⃣ Lethargy or constipation

🔧 Treating hairballs:
1️⃣ Regular grooming: Brushing your cat's fur helps remove loose hair and reduces the amount they ingest.
2️⃣ Special diets: Consult with your veterinarian about hairball control diets that promote digestion and reduce hairball formation.
3️⃣ Hairball remedies: There are various hairball remedies available, such as specialized pastes or treats that help lubricate the digestive system and aid in the passage of hairballs.

🏥 If your cat experiences severe or persistent hairball issues, please consult your veterinarian for a thorough examination.🐾💙
