The School of Music at the University of Alabama is very pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Ransom Wilson as the Camilla Huxford Endowed Chair in Orchestral Studies. Mr. Wilson is an internationally acclaimed musical artist with a strong background as a conductor, flute soloist, chamber musician, and educator. Professor Wilson comes to the University of Alabama having been on the faculty of the Yale University School of Music for the past 30 years. His appointment to our faculty will make a tremendous addition to what is already a vibrant, energetic, and highly experienced faculty. His vast skillset and range of experience will provide a new level of leadership for the Huxford Symphony Orchestra, providing outstanding experiences and opportunities for our students. Selected following an exhaustive international search, Professor Wilson will join the faculty at UA in August of 2023.

“I Just Wanna Play!” Happens every month on the third Thursday. On November 18th at 7pm the New York Flute Club is honored to feature renowned Mexican flutist Miguel Ángel Villanueva in a Q&A session. During this session Mr. Villanueva will be presenting a talk on the Mexican flute repertoire and his collaborations with composers such as Eduardo Angulo, and among other composers.

Born in México City, Villanueva began his musical studies at the Escuela Nacional de Música (UNAM) with Roxana Lara and Héctor Jaramillo. Later he travelled to France and entered the École Normale de Musique de Paris where he was awarded the Diplôme Supérieur d'Exécution and the Conservatoire National de Région de Saint-Maur, in Paris, where he earned a Médaille d’Or. His teachers were: Jacques Royer (Orchestre de Paris), Ida Ribera (Jean Pierre. Rampal’s assistant), Shigenori Kudo and Michel Moragues (Orchestre National de France). During his student years, he was awarded a First Prize at both the Nerini and Bellan Competitions in Paris; he also won a Third Prize at the UFAM International Competition. Miguel Villanueva has performed as soloist with the Münchener Streicher-Ensemble, the Orchestre de la Cité Universitaire and with many orchestras in México including the Filarmónica de Jalisco. He was invited by the Berliner – Mozart Ensemble to perform as principal flute during a European tour. As a recitalist, he has performed in México, France, England, Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Austria, Portugal, Canada and the USA. Mr. Villanueva holds a teaching position at the Escuela Nacional de Música at the National Autonomous University of México (UNAM) , the largest university in Latin America, founded in 1551. In addition, he is the director of the National Flute Festival and Competition in México.

Patricia Moya, Horacio Uribe, Hugo Rosales, René Torres y Roberto Peña, además de obras de música de cámara de diversos autores nacionales y extranjeros. Ha sido invitado como solista por importantes orquestas en todo el país, así como en Francia, Alemania, Canadá, Ecuador, Colombia y Brasil. Su actividad concertista lo ha llevado a presentarse en Europa, Norte América, Sur América, Norte de África y México. Su trabajo ha sido motivo de numerosas entrevistas en la prensa escrita, así como en programas radiofónicos y de televisión en Francia, EUA y México.

Durante cuatro años fue profesor residente en el "Stratford International Flute Festival", en Inglaterra, profesor en el Conservatorio de Bourg-en-Bresse, Francia y en la Escuela Superior de Música del INBA. Ha impartido numerosos cursos en México, así como en EUA, Canadá, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador e Inglaterra.
