Unveiling Lee Bul’s facade commission at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York!

For the 2024 Genesis Facade Commission, Lee Bul created four new sculptures that combine figurative and abstract elements. Titled ‘Long Tail Halo’, the exhibition marks the artist’s first major project in the United States in more than 20 years and the fifth in the series of contemporary commissions for The Met’s facade niches.

The works presented in ‘Long Tail Halo’, independently and in dialogue, symbolize the abiding human desire for progress and perfection while hinting at the failures and repercussions inherent to these pursuits. Together they reflect the endless revisions and transformations in the long narratives of history.

Next opening in Seoul: Nari Ward

Join us for the opening reception of Nari Ward’s new exhibition at our Seoul gallery! We’ll be celebrating with the artist on Wednesday, August 28, 6–8 PM.

Titled ongoin’, the show was recommended by the Korea Herald as a “must-visit exhibition that coincides with Frieze Seoul.”

Nari Ward’s second exhibition in Seoul features copper panel works, sculpture, and wall-based installations that address aspects of healing and care that shape local communities—specifically in Harlem, the artist’s longtime neighborhood in New York. Additionally, ongoin’ explores the artist’s dedication to artistic interpretations of spiritual ceremonies and rituals, probing the fractured images and unseen forces often associated with such practices.

Last Chance! A solo exhibition of Heidi Bucher’s work is on view at MCAD Manila through August 18.

Titled ‘And Pull Yesterday into Today’, the exhibition comes to the Philippines as the third and last leg of Bucher’s Asian tour, following outings at the Art Sonje Center in Seoul and the Red Brick Art Museum in Beijing.

The show takes its title from a statement from Bucher regarding her signature latex “skinning” process: “We cover the rooms and listen. We look at the surface and coat it. We cover and reveal. What has been lived, what has passed, gets caught in the cloth and remains hanging. We slowly loosen the layers of rubber, the skin, and pull yesterday into today.”

Catherine Opie’s new exhibition at the MASP - Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand is the first of its kind in the history of the museum and the artist’s first solo exhibition in Brazil.

Curated by Adriano Pedrosa and Guilherme Giufrida, Genre/Gender/Portraiture presents over 60 photographs taken by Opie between 1987 and 2022 in dialogue with 21 classical portraits from the museum’s collection.

The subtitle of the exhibition alludes to the different meanings in Portuguese of the word gênero, which translates in English to both “gender” and “genre.” On the one hand, the genre is the type, the species, the form, the class, the category, the style; in the field of visual arts, we can talk about different genres in painting: portrait, landscape, still life.

On the other hand, gender is the socially constructed difference between men and women or those who identify themselves in other ways, and can encompass different identities, whether transgender, non-binary, or cisgender. Opie appropriates the traditional portrait genre, normally associated with elites, to give visibility and strength to her own community.

The works are displayed on the iconic glass easels of Lina Bo Bardi—the architect who designed the MASP building—proposing a compelling visual conversation between many genres: painting and photography, the historical and the contemporary, and above all between bodies, sexualities, and gender identities.

The show is on view through October 27 in São Paulo.

In the Unlimited sector of Art Basel, don’t miss Liza Lou’s landmark installation ‘Security Fence’. On view for the duration of the fair (through Sunday, June 16).

Standing 11 feet tall and crafted from glass beads on steel and razor wire, Lou’s to-scale installation reconstructs prison security measures—a chain link fence topped with barbed wire.

Calling notions of security and fragility into question, Lou’s elaborate handmade sculpture introduces touch and contact into a space of isolation, lending care and dignity to an otherwise dehumanizing industrial structure.

The artist would like to acknowledge her Durban, South Africa studio team in the making of this work: S’philile Bhengu, Nonhlanhla Gumede, Thandazile Gwala, Zanele Gwala, Ntombi Luthuli, S’bonelo Madiba, Thulisile Madiba, Buhle Mbele, Fikile Mbhele, Sindi Lushaba, Lucy Ndlovu, Sindi Ndlovu, Nokuthula Ngidi, and Nokuthula Shinga.

Don’t miss your chance to see Teresita Fernández: Soil Horizon at our New York gallery, on view through Saturday, June 1.

Over the course of her decades-long career, Teresita Fernández’s practice has been characterized by an expansive reimagining of what constitutes a landscape: from the subterranean to the cosmic, to contentious borderlines and borderlands. In ‘Soil Horizon’, the artist turns inward, to the elusive and numinous landscapes we carry within. Returning repeatedly to the question “Where am I?” as an emotive and conceptual point of origin, Fernández unravels the intimacies between matter, human beings, and places.

In ‘Soil Horizon’, Fernández debuts several bodies of work, including two large-scale sculptural pieces, a series of copper relief panels, and notably, her first film, co-directed with Juan Carlos Alom. Where previous exhibitions have focused more explicitly on the historical, socio-political, or elemental aspects of place, in ‘Soil Horizon’, Fernández turns her attention to the inner realm, contemplating her coordinates through geological, cosmological, and existential lenses.

The artist’s subtle conceptual practice and material processes have positioned her at the forefront of contemporary art, cementing her place in the canon and contextualizing her work within art historical discourse on art and land. Following ‘Soil Horizon’ at Lehmann Maupin, SITE Santa Fe will present ‘Teresita Fernández / Robert Smithson’. Opening in July 2024, this two-artist exhibition will feature over 30 works by Fernández and mark the first time Robert Smithson’s oeuvre has been placed in conversation with an artist working today.
