This year’s East Valley Dance Project is off and running! Ninety-nine incredible students from Coachella Valley and Desert Mirage High Schools attended the audition and those selected will perform on the McCallum stage as part of Palm Desert Choreography Festival on November 10. Thank you to our Education Ambassadors who came out to serve on the audition panel and our Project partners Backhausdance, Desert Mirage and Coachella Valley High Schools. The Festival - a dynamic live platform for dancemakers and dancers to showcase their work - is a powerful vehicle for McCallum to engage audiences and youth around dance in the Coachella Valley. Celebrating dance as an art form, this unique event delivers an exciting variety of new work created by inventive choreographers and performed by extraordinary dancers. While the cast has been enjoying an exciting summer, they’re gearing up for an unforgettable tour filled with jazz, timeless tunes, and breathtaking performances. Here's what they’ve been up to: Benny Benack III, the Emmy-nominated trumpeter and charismatic crooner, has been busy recording his first-ever live album, which was captured during two sold-out nights at the iconic Blue Llama Jazz Club. Advanced copies of the album will be available on tour. He’s also performed at prestigious venues like Jazz at Lincoln Center in NYC, and international spots from Vegas to Oslo. In his downtime, Benny is eagerly awaiting the start of football season, cheering on his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers! Stella Cole, the sensational vocalist and social media star, has had an incredible summer filled with travel and music. She recently performed at the Nice Jazz Festival, took time to swim in the Mediterranean, and enjoyed Lake Como! In even bigger news, Stella’s highly anticipated debut album just dropped on August 30th and is now available on all streaming platforms! In partnership with Visit Greater Palm Springs, McCallum Theatre staff welcomed high school students from Coachella Valley High School’s Hospitality Academy for a theatre tour and exploration of careers in theatre. This pilot program provides students with the opportunity to learn about career paths in the hospitality and tourism industry through a 6-week program with a focus on soft skills, employability skills, and leadership development. At the tour, students learned more about career pathways in theatre such as marketing, development, audience engagement, operations, production, education programming, and volunteering at the theatre. As June draws to a close, we’re thrilled to celebrate our Aesthetic Education Program elementary school partners from Carter, Coral Mountain Academy, Johnson, Lincoln, Madison, Reagan, Saul Martinez, Sunny Sands, and Washington Charter Schools who joined us for our first Summer Institute for Educators since 2019, held from June 10th to 14th. Throughout the week, participants engaged in workshops, live performances, and screenings. The Aesthetic Education Program ignites creativity, exploration, and discovery in schools across the Coachella Valley, placing the arts at the heart of inquiry-driven learning experiences for thousands of students each year. In conjunction with the Institute, McCallum Theatre Education proudly presented the inaugural Rose Award, named after our dedicated program partner and school coordinator, LuAnn Rose. This award recognizes Allan Lehmann, Principal at Washington Charter School, for his inspired leadership and 15-year collaboration with McCallum, benefiting all classrooms and students at the school. A heartfelt thank you to our spirited faculty of teaching artists for their excellent workshops, our wonderful performing artists, the community members who joined us for the live performances, and the generous donors who support our education mission.
