I love making these cylinder shaped lidded jars and enjoy making handles and knobs that are a little overstated. I do like to give a similar voice to the knob that relates to the shape of the jar - they almost look like little pots resting on top of the lids.
I also like the way the crystalline glazes perform on these vertical forms.

Here's a series of teapots I did a while back - you can see each series starts with a simple sketch and I go from there. I love the pillow-like quality the bodies have. I was also exploring a different style of lid I usually make. I love the way this series turned out. People ask me what is my favorite stage of making - the leather hard stage is my answer. This is when the clay is still wet enough to cut parts away or add pieces together - it is just after the pieces have been trimmed and finished, ready to dry so they can be bisque fired. They have this beautiful softness to them and they are pure form - they play with light to create beautiful shadows that further define the form. They are innocent and do not know of the danger before them: fire; sanding; glazing; grinding. When making my carved top pieces, I always complete both sections before I assemble them. The trick is getting the top perfectly centered on top. This is a slightly new form - I'm thinking they need a pedestal to lift them a bit. I always wanted to tie in my link to quilts - growing up in an area with lots of Amish influence, I've always loved the beautiful quilt patterns my grandmother used to make. I'll be exploring quilt patterns using crystalline glazes to simulate the use of fabric with similar tones and values of color but often different patterns - crystalline glazes offer this variation in pattern naturally so it seemed like a good fit. We are on our way to New York City to celebrate Keith's birthday. While we are there, we will be seeing a few Broadway productions, visit Birdland to see the famous Susie Mosher, and watch a taping of "The View". These pieces take a minimum of 3 days to create. Lots of carving, piercing, and beading takes time.
